From the time of the ancients man has been impressed with the force of lightning and its effect on the rocks at the surface of the earth. It was Saussure in 1786 who first wrote a scientific account of a true fulgurite, and a wealth of literature has been written about the subject since this time. Many unusual fulgurites have been described, some of which may not truly be the result of lightning. These data are a part of a study of small mammal populations at Cedar Creek Forest, Anoka County, Minnesota. The live-trapping area of 5.0 acres, with 81 traps spaced 52 feet apart, was in a tamarack-white cedar bog. The study extended over a period of 7 years (1949-1955). Trapping periods of five days (four nights) extended from early May to the first part of October. In all, there were 14,580 trap-nights. A total of 428 voles were marked and weighed; data on 25 dead unmarked individuals are also included.

In a recent report (1) from this laboratory, an improved fluorometric assay for coumarin in sweetclover is described. Briefly, the method consists of opening the lactone ring of coumarin by treatment with alkali, after which the resulting non-fluorescent cis-o-hydroxycinnamic acid is partially converted, by means of ultraviolet irradiation, to the fluorescent trans isomer. Measurements of fluorescence are then made. In the interval between ultraviolet treatment and measurement of fluorescence, the solutions to be assayed must be protected from the usual light of the laboratory, since exposure to such light results in loss of fluorescence, indicating a reconversion of some of …

Effect Of Host Condition On The Clover Root Borer, K. P. Pruess

Oviposition by the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham), is completed earlier in weakened than in vigorous plants, but development is more rapid in vigorous or lightly infested roots. High populations occurring early in the season result in plant mortality with subsequently slowed borer development.

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The Agricultural Act of 1956, which contains the Soil Bank Act, was enacted in the spring of 1956. The soil bank program is divided into two phases, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is available to farmers with acreage allotments for the basic commodities, which are wheat and corn in South Dakota. The farmer takes part in the acreage reserve program by signing a one-year agreement with his Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee (hereafter referred to as the ASC Committee) and reducing his acreage below the assigned allotment on his farm.
