Mammals, Birds, And Butterflies At Sodium Sources In Northern Ontario Forests, D. Fraser Jan 1985

Mammals, Birds, And Butterflies At Sodium Sources In Northern Ontario Forests, D. Fraser

Feeding Behavior Collection

Wildlife seen at natural sodium-rich springs and at roadside pools contaminated by highway de-icing salt in northern Ontario included two species of wild ungulates, one species of rodent, three species of birds, and two species of butterflies. The three birds were finches of the sub-family Carduelinae, noted for feeding almost exclusively on plant material. The mammalian species were also herbivorous. Apart from Porcupines (Erethizon dorsaturn), small mammals were rarely seen at the saltwater locations, perhaps because of their apparent preference to ingest salt in solid form rather than in water.

The Ecology Of Foraging Behavior: Implications For Animal Learning And Memory, Alan Kamil, Herbert L. Roitblat Jan 1985

The Ecology Of Foraging Behavior: Implications For Animal Learning And Memory, Alan Kamil, Herbert L. Roitblat

Avian Cognition Papers

In his recent Annual Review of Psychology article, Snowdon (1983) discussed the synthesis of ethology and comparative psychology. A similar synthesis of behavioral ecology and animal learning is beginning to take place. This article reviews developments in the behavioral ecology and ethology of foraging behavior relevant to psychological research on animal learning. The psychological literature shows that animals possess a wide range of learning abilities, including “simple” classical and operant conditioning; they acquire spatial, nonspatial, and temporal discriminations; they exhibit various forms of rule learning (e.g. matching-to-sample and learning set), and may even in certain senses learn language. Why does …

The Effects Of Prey Depletion On The Patch Choice Of Foraging Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alan Kamil, Sonja I. Yoerg Jan 1985

The Effects Of Prey Depletion On The Patch Choice Of Foraging Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alan Kamil, Sonja I. Yoerg

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) were trained to hunt for non-cryptic moths presented in projected images. On each trial, the jays chose one of two patches to hunt in: (1) a uniform, “non-depleting” patch with constant prey density of 0.25; or (2) a “depleting” patch in which prey density changed during the foraging bout. In the depleting patch, the initial prey density was 0.50, declining to zero in a single step part-way through each foraging bout (session). The patch choices of the jays were greatly affected by these conditions. The jays chose the depleting patch early in the session, …

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …

Cooperatives: Their Effectiveness And Limitations For Small-Scale Fisheries Development, Hiroaki Yonesaka Jan 1985

Cooperatives: Their Effectiveness And Limitations For Small-Scale Fisheries Development, Hiroaki Yonesaka

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Increased experience in fisheries cooperatives of developing countries has called into question a long-held presumption about their desirability and feasibility. In this context, this study attempts to reformulate the cooperative approach for small-scale fisheries in a realistic policy framework. First, past failures of fisheries cooperatives are analyzed from three different angles: the uniqueness of the fishing industry, systems intrinsic to the cooperative, and development policy. Second, various possibilities of building viable cooperatives are explored by introducing two key concnpets: the strategic option and the operational option. On the one hand, the strategic option implies that it is imperative to integrate …

A Rapid Technique For Counting Cracks In Rocks, W. B. Durham, J. M. Beiriger, H. C. Weed Dec 1984

A Rapid Technique For Counting Cracks In Rocks, W. B. Durham, J. M. Beiriger, H. C. Weed

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an image analyzer, we have developed a technique for counting and measuring cracks in rocks which is more efficient than traditional techniques in which an operator performs all image analysis functions. The key aspect of the technique is that black-on-white tracings of fresh cracks, which can be made rather rapidly by an operator, are measured and digitized by an image analyzer. The most time-consuming step in the process has now become the generation of SEM micrographs and pertinent chemical (mineralogical) information, not the quantification of crack structure. The technique has been applied to …

Screening For Hereditary Medullary Cancer In Denmark, Kristian Emmertsen Dec 1984

Screening For Hereditary Medullary Cancer In Denmark, Kristian Emmertsen

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Screening of first-degree relatives of patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) gave normal values of pentagastrin-stimulated serum calcitonin and 24-hour urinary catecholamine levels in the relatives of 18 of 22 patients. This result is considered to be valid evidence for sporadic MTC. Absence of C-cell hyperplasia maybe another indication of sporadic MTC. Four hereditary MTCs were represented by one fully expressed MEN-2B patient without affected relatives, one fully expressed MEN-2A case in one family, and two first cousins with MTC as the only MEN-2A lesion in another family. Fourteen relatives of the MEN-2A patients had elevated serum calcitonin levels, and …

Methylphenidate Effects On The Learning And Performance Of Four Hyper Active Children, Paul James Yoder Dec 1984

Methylphenidate Effects On The Learning And Performance Of Four Hyper Active Children, Paul James Yoder

Dissertations

The effects of methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin) on the learning and performance of four hyperactive children were evaluated using a repeated acquisition procedure with both learning and performance components. Three dosages of methylphenidate plus a placebo were evaluated under double-blind experimental conditions. Dosages treated included each subject's therapeutic dosage, a dosage 5 milligrams higher, and a dosage 5 milligrams lower. Methylphenidate produced no effect on either the number of errors per session or on the rate of responding across the range of dosages tested suggesting that the medication neither facilitated nor impaired learning or performance. Data were also collected on social …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Lateral Ventricle Of The Pigeon Brain, P. Mestres, K. Rascher, J. D. Delius Nov 1984

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Lateral Ventricle Of The Pigeon Brain, P. Mestres, K. Rascher, J. D. Delius

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Adult pigeons of both sexes were used for this study. Depending upon the distribution of various surface profiles, for example cilia, microvilli and blebs, ependymal areas with differing surface patterns were distinguished in the lateral ventricle. The topographical locations of these areas with respect to the underlying forebrain nuclei were determined in accord with the atlas of Karten and Hodos (1967). The medial surface (A) of the ventricle was much more densely ciliated than the lateral surface (B). There did not appear to be any correlation between a given surface pattern and a specific type of underlying nervous tissue. Comparison …

The Hsus Condemns Psychological Experimentation On Animals

Close Up Reports

For almost a century, millions of cats, dogs, monkeys, and other laboratory animals have fallen victim to the misguided notion that by torturing animals we may someday find the golden key that unlocks the dark corners and passageways of human psychology. Heedless of any relevance the experiments may have to the human condition or of the differences between humans and other animals, experimental psychologists are exercising unbridled on animals the whole range of suffering, from emotional trauma, like that experienced by the doomed infant monkey, to outright physical torture. Animals have been blinded and returned to the wild to test …

The Effect Of Chronic Low Level Lead Ingestion On Blood Pressure In Young Dogs, Thomas Robert Vetrano May 1984

The Effect Of Chronic Low Level Lead Ingestion On Blood Pressure In Young Dogs, Thomas Robert Vetrano

Theses

The relationship between chronic, low level lead exposure and hypertension has been a controversial issue for nearly a century. This study was designed to examine if such exposure is capable of causing hypertension in young dogs. Twelve three-month old female hounds were split into groups of six and paired with their littermate. One group received a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight of lead daily (orally); the controls received equimolar sodium acetate. Blood pressures were determined using an indirect Doppler technique.

Similar blood pressures were recorded for both groups prior to lead dosing. After nine days of lead ingestion, the …
