Fresh produce is highly perishable, necessitating various postharvest treatments to minimize quality loss, extend shelf-life, and facilitate international trade. This study investigated the potential of a single low-dose gamma irradiation treatment as an alternative to commercially used chemical treatments for protecting ‘Granny Smith’ apples against insect pests and postharvest disorders. ‘Granny Smith’ apples harvested in 2019 and 2020 were treated with gamma irradiation at doses of 240 or 860 Gray (Gy) or with commercial chemical applications of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), diphenylamine (DPA), or methyl bromide (MeBr). The impact on fruit quality, physiology, and the development of postharvest disorders was evaluated after …

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) flow measurements are common practice in laboratory settings in a wide variety of fields involving fluid dynamics, including biology, physics, engineering, and medicine. Dynamic fluid pressure is a notoriously difficult property to measure non-intrusively, yet its variation is a driving flow force and critical to model correctly. Techniques have been developed to estimate the pressure from velocity and velocity gradient measurements. Here, we highlight a novel application of boundary conditions when applying such pressure estimation techniques based on two-dimensional PIV data; the novel method is especially relevant to problems with complex boundary conditions. As such, it …
Mechanical Improvements And Control Implementation On A Biomimetic Quadruped Model, Matthew Jack Lutz
Mechanical Improvements And Control Implementation On A Biomimetic Quadruped Model, Matthew Jack Lutz
Dissertations and Theses
Robotic development started billions of years after earth first began biological prototyping. While the evolutionary process in animals is quite different from robotic prototyping, it still remains no surprise that animals remain more agile, more efficient, and more adaptable than even the most advanced engineered robots to date, simply due to the sheer length of their improvement process. While bridging this improvement gap between deficits in robots and the abilities of animals is difficult, a specific subfield of robotics engineering has attempted to do so using biomimetic robotics. At Portland State, the Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab (AARL) studies these …

Folding Architecture “Origami Art-Inspired” Applicability To Sustainable Architecture- Biomuseo As A Case Study, Vitta A. Ibrahim
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The growing need for sustainable architectural solutions in the contemporary era underscores the necessity for interactive architectural applications that can adapt to changing requirements. In architecture, folding systems refer to three-dimensional, foldable structural forms that create unique spatial configurations and possess a wide range of capabilities. Drawing inspiration from origami techniques, this study emphasizes the role of folding systems in generating innovative spatial designs. The research problem arises from the fact that the built environment is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, necessitating the implementation of smart solutions. The goal of this study is to identify …
Investigation Of Regulated Cell Death (Rcd) Modalities Induced By Copper(Ii), Manganese(Ii) And Silver(I) Complexes Containing Bridging Dicarboxylate And 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands, Ella O'Sullivan
Doctoral
With the increasing global cancer burden in recent years, there is an urgency to develop novel chemotherapeutic agents. Transition metal complexes represent an attractive class of candidates, owing to their unique electronic and stereochemical properties, as well as their capacity for ligand exchange, redox activity, and catalytic reactivity. These characteristics enable cellular signalling mechanisms that lead to tumour cell cytotoxicity via regulated cell death (RCD) mechanisms. The conventional RCD mechanisms of apoptosis and autophagy are attractive targets for the development of novel complexes because tumour cells evade apoptosis but use autophagy as a survival mechanism when under stress. Therefore, novel …

Current discussion surrounding the clinical capabilities of generative language models(GLMs) predominantly centers around multiple-choice question-answer(MCQA) benchmarks derived from clinical licensing examinations. While accepted for human examinees, characteristics unique to GLMs bring into question the validity of such benchmarks. Here, we validate five benchmarks using eight GLMs, ablating for parameter size and reasoning capabilities, validating via prompt permutation three key assumptions that underpin the generalizability of MCQA-based assessments: that knowledge is applied, not memorized, that semantic consistency will lead to consistent answers, and that situations with no answers can be recognized. While large models are more resilient to our perturbations compared …

(R2150) Impact Of Specialist Predator Harvesting On The Stability Of A Three-Species Food Chain Model With A Generalist Predator, S. Ganga, S. Vijaya
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this study, the stability of a three-species food chain model comprising a prey, an intermediate specialist predator, and a top predator exhibiting generalist behavior is examined, with harvesting applied to the intermediate predator. The main objective is to investigate how variations in the harvesting rate influence system stability and the coexistence of all three species. The positivity, boundedness, and equilibrium points of the model are analyzed to ensure biological feasibility. The equilibrium point involving the prey and the top predator satisfies the criteria for both local and global asymptotic stability. The coexistence equilibrium point attains local asymptotic stability based …

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a major threat to the global swine industry. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as crucial regulators of antiviral immunity, but their roles in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs)—the primary target of PRRSV—remain poorly characterized. This study presents a genome-wide analysis of lncRNA expression in PAMs stimulated with a PRRS modified live virus (MLV) vaccine and two type I interferons, IFN-α1 and IFN-ω5. Whole-transcriptome sequencing identified over 2000 differentially expressed lncRNAs, with IFN-ω5 inducing the most extensive transcriptional reprogramming. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed interferon-specific lncRNA-mRNA modules, and functional enrichment showed …

Hepatocyte-Specific Lrp1 Silencing Exacerbates Brain Amyloidosis Without Compensatory Ldl Receptor Family Involvement, Brian Carson, Josephine Chu, Devaraj V. Chandrashekar, Jerome Garcia, Rachita K. Sumbria, Derick Han
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background
LDL receptor related protein 1 (LRP1) is a major hepatic receptor involved in lipoprotein metabolism, protease degradation, transmembrane receptor modulation, and clearance of excess protein, such as Aβ. Decreased expression of LRP1 due to liver injury can impair receptor-mediated clearance, increasing Aβ availability in the periphery. We investigated the effects of hepato-specific silencing of LRP1 on Aβ deposition in the brain. Additionally, other LDL family members (LRP5, LRP6, and LDLR) that may participate in Aβ clearance were monitored in the liver to ensure non-compensatory effects of LRP1 silencing.
Method
4-month-old male double transgenic (APP/PS1) AD mice were injected with …

Humans have always been trying to unravel principles that guide how things around us function, all the way from galactic ovements to basic building blocks of matter. The physical and chemical properties of ‘biological’ systems govern processes all the way from molecular interactions of proteins to the form and function of individual living organisms. In this work, I focus on the proteins which help give shape and structure to the smallest building block of life, the cell and associated mechanisms of building fundamental cellular architectures, like the mitotic spindle. Mitosis takes place by microtubules aligning themselves in anti-parallel fashion with …

Background
Alcohol-induced liver injury occurs in the pericentral region of the liver and can induce mitochondrial remodeling and exacerbate Alzheimer's Disease (AD) progression. Subpopulations of mitochondria: general mitochondria (GM), peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) and endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-bound mitochondria (ERM) maintain cellular homeostasis via energy synthesis, lipid homeostasis, and regulation of intracellular calcium. Hepatic amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a source of peripheral amyloid beta (aB) and affects AD pathology in the brain. Understanding the localization and expression of hepatic APP in mitochondrial subpopulations are critical to understanding aB metabolism and may play a role in identifying a potential mechanism for metabolic dysfunction. …

Neurological disorders are linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and calcium overload. Mitochondrial calcium uptake is mediated by the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (mtCU), regulated by MICU1, which can be either homodimerized or heterodimerized with MICU2 or MICU3. Though MICU2 is scarce in the adult brain, MICU2 loss in patients leads to a neurodevelopmental disorder. We hypothesized that MICU2 is required for developmental calcium signaling and neuronal migration. MICU2 is present in the developing mouse brain but disappears by maturation, contrasting with other mtCU subunits that increase. MICU2 loss in mice does not affect cytoplasmic calcium but augments the mitochondrial matrix calcium rise …

Perinatal T cells have distinctive phenotypes and functions that may be due in part to age-associated features of stromal cells in the perinatal thymus. We identify age-associated changes in mouse thymic epithelial cells, mesenchyme, endothelium, and hematopoietic antigen-presenting cells from birth to one month of age using single-cell transcriptional profiling, flow cytometry, and imaging. Coordinated cellular and molecular changes occur at 7-14 days of age, designated "transitional ages," as thymus growth switches to homeostasis. E2F target gene expression declines, and the expression of type I interferon response genes increases across diverse cell types at transitional ages. Alterations in thymic stromal …

Organic waste comprises a considerable portion of global waste, requiring effective management. The ability of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens, BSF) to convert organic waste into biomass has been well reported. However, bioconversion can be hindered by fiber-rich substrates, a challenge that can be addressed through substrate pretreatment. This study examined the oviposition preferences and larval performance of BSFs in several fruit wastes fermented by effective microorganisms (EMs), which were compared to non-fermented substrates. The oviposition attractants utilized pineapple peel and overripe soursop, with larval performance evaluated among different treatments, i.e., non-fermented pineapple peel (NFP), fermented pineapple …

In this study, we examine the influence of benthic coverage on fish diversity in coral reef ecosystems. Benthic and reef fish community surveys were conducted at 14 sites using underwater photographic transect and underwater visual census methods, respectively. Coral cover (26.1%) was found to be lower than turf algae cover (42.1%). A total of 56 fish species, comprised of 14 carnivores, 21 corallivores, and 21 herbivores, were recorded. The most widely distributed carnivore and herbivore species were Lethrinus harak and Ctenochaetus striatus, respectively. Two species of butterflyfish, Chaetodon citrinellus and Chaetodon trifasciatus, were the most widely distributed species …

Our Goal is to identify how colorectal cancer (CRC) arises in the single-layered cell epithelium (simple columnar epithelium) that lines the luminal surface of the large intestine. Background: We recently reported that the dynamic organization of cells in colonic epithelium is encoded by five biological rules and conjectured that colon tumorigenesis involves an autocatalytic tissue renewal reaction. Introduction Our objective was to define how altered crypt turnover explains tissue disorganization that leads to adenoma morphogenesis and CRC. Hypothesis: Changes in rate of tissue renewal-based cell polymerization leads to epithelial expansion and tissue disorganization during adenoma histogenesis. Methods: Accordingly, we created …

Lead is a persistent environmental toxin with pronounced neurotoxic effects, particularly on the central nervous system. This study evaluated the impact of lead acetate on the cerebellar cortex of adult Wistar rats and assessed the neuroprotective effects of aqueous Bryophyllum pinnatum extract. Twenty adult Wistar rats (180–220 g) were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 5): Control (distilled water), T1 (0.075 mg/kg lead acetate), T2 (100 mg/kg B. pinnatum), and T3 (lead + B. pinnatum). Treatments were administered orally for 21 days. Cerebellar tissues were processed for biochemical and histological analysis, and data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism v10.1.Lead …
