The study of the Betulaceae and the Fagaceae in Milwaukee County and the immediate vicinity, taxonomically and from the standpoint of distribution presents an interesting problem. The family Betulaceae (Birch Family) comprises 11 species and 3 varieties, 8 species of which are arborescent. One genera is sometimes referred to as being arborescent in this vicinity, but since the author does not consider a lower growing shrub arborescent, he has excluded it from the classification of trees but has in the following discussion treated it as a shrub. The Matrimony-vines are shrubs with usually spiny branches, rigid in some species, slender and arching or procumbent in others, with small and rather narrow, usually grayish green leaves, and dull-colored whitish, purplish, or violet flowers and scarlet, rarely yellow or black, berries. Most of the species are tender but Lycium halimlfollum, L. chinense, and also Lycium turcomanicum and L. ruthenlcum are hardy and thrive in the north temperate regions.

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.

One of the most important and much disputed questions in the field of developmental anatomy is the role the myotomes play in the development of the limb musculature. At present there are two explanations advanced concerning the development of the limb-musculature in mammals. The first is that limb-buds arise as local thickening of the somatopleure, which becomes filled with a homogeneous syncytial mesenchymal tissue, that later becomes innervated with muscle-buds from the myotomes and with blood vessels, and nerves from the trunk of th embryo. Numerous trichomonad flagelletes from the intestines or various birds have been described; but as fas as the writer has been able to discover, none from the intestine of the coot, Fulica americana. Martin and Robertson (1911) described Trichomones eberthi and T. gallinerum from the caecum of fowls; Kotlan (1923) described Tetratrichomonas avatis from the caecum of ducks; Tyzzer (1930) described flagellates from the ruffed grouse.

However, the species described by the above authors are quite different from Trichomonas to be described in this paper. This organism is definitely a member of the genus Trichomonas since it possesses the distinguishing characteristics …
