The Distribution Of Pectinatella Magnifica Leidy In The United States, S. W. Geiser
The Distribution Of Pectinatella Magnifica Leidy In The United States, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
In 1851, Leidy described from the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, the interesting Bryozoan, Pectinatella magnifica. Since then, it has been recorded from a number of other localities in America and Europe. The exact distribution, however (for America, at least) is still only partially known. Brown1 has recently published a careful study of the biology of this species; and the present writer has studied, since 1928, the distribution of this species in Iowa, as well as its periodicity of abundance.
Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig
Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig
Bachelors’ Theses
The heart in any animal, and especially in higher animals, is an important organ. It is the purpose of this paper to consider such an organ from the anatomical and physiological basis as it exists in the turtle.
The turtle was chosen as the subject for many reasons. The first one of these reasons was because the heart of the turtle closely.resembles the most complex of hearts in structure and action. The second was because the heart is quite typical of the members of Class Reptilia. The third reason was because the speciments are readily obtainable.

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin
Bachelors’ Theses
The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

A New Ovibovine, Symbos Convexifrons, Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour
A New Ovibovine, Symbos Convexifrons, Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
In Bulletin 25, entitled The Musk-oxen of Nebraska, the writer figured and briefly catalogued the ovibovines of this State as known at that date. In the meantime an interesting new form unlike that of any species falling within our experience presents itself from the Pleistocene of Cherry County, Nebraska. The new specimen cannot be assigned a place in any of the four following genera: Preptoceras, Euceratherium, Ovibos, or Bootherium, but may possibly be referable to the genus Symbos, to which we are assigning it provisionally. It is so unlike Symbos, however, that it may be a distinct genus. …
Some Digenetic Trematodes From Deep-Water Fish Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter
Some Digenetic Trematodes From Deep-Water Fish Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Introduction (first two paragraphs)
The parasitic fauna of ocean depths is practically unknown. Although an extensive fish population occurs at all depths, very little study has yet been made on the helminths of these fish. During the summers of 1930, 1931, and 1932 excellent opportunity was offered for the collection of parasites from fish trawled from depths varying from 40 to 582 fathoms at Tortugas, Florida. A considerable number of systematic hauls by the staff and crew of the Tortugas Biological Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington yielded an abundance and considerable variety of fish, some of rare forms, …
Rb34-6 The Relation Of Drouth To Water-Use In Nebraska, G.E. Condra
Rb34-6 The Relation Of Drouth To Water-Use In Nebraska, G.E. Condra
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Three severe drouths have occurred in Nebraska and adjacent states within the past eighty years, and less severe ones have come at moderately regular intervals. Their influence on the agricultural development of the state is well known, but their relation to water supply in general is not so well understood.
This research bulletin is a brief review of the relation of drouth to soil moisture, surface water, and groundwater supplies.
Ecological Relations In The Pitch Pine Plains Of Southern New Jersey, Harold J. Lutz
Ecological Relations In The Pitch Pine Plains Of Southern New Jersey, Harold J. Lutz
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
An investigation was undertaken with the primary object of determining the factors responsible for the peculiar development of the vegetation in the Plains community. The conclusion ·is reached that the Plains areas are capable of supporting forest growth similar to that in the Pine Barrens. Inasmuch as the Plains owe their continued existence to repeated fires, it is obvious that effective fire protection is the first and most important step toward their rehabilitation.

The Geology And Mammalian Fauna Of The Pleistocene Of Nebraska Part I Outline Of Pleistocene Geology Of Nebraska Part Ii The Pleistocene Mammals Of Nebraska, A. L. Lugn, C. Bertrand Schultz
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The object of the present paper is to provide a suitable brief statement of the present state of knowledge of the Pleistocene geology of Nebraska, for an adequate understanding of the Pleistocene Mammal list, by Mr. C. Bertrand Schultz, which forms Part II of this report. The "outline" is necessarily brief and does not contain many detailed sections, nor lengthy discussions of controversial points. It is lacking in adequate detailed descriptions of new formations and may not be entirely convincing to many readers. The only excuse which the writer can offer for the shortcomings of the following pages is the …

Improving The Farm Environment For Wild Life, Wallace B. Grange, W. L. Mcatee
Improving The Farm Environment For Wild Life, Wallace B. Grange, W. L. Mcatee
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
As farms replace virgin lands, whether forest or swamp, marsh or prairie, conditions affecting wild life are revolutionized. Some creatures, especially the larger ones, disappear. Others are benefited, at least during the earlier stages of agriculture, and increase in numbers. This is true of nearly all birds up to the size of the crow and of mammals to that of the rabbit. As agriculture becomes more intensive, however, and woods are cut down, hedgerows eliminated, and rough nooks here and there brought under cultivation, conditions become unfavorable for the smaller forms of wild life.
Uniform mature forest, uniform swamp, or …

Relation Of The Differential Fertilization Genes, Ga Ga, To Certain Other Genes Of The Su-Tu Linkage Group Of Maize, R. A. Emerson
Relation Of The Differential Fertilization Genes, Ga Ga, To Certain Other Genes Of The Su-Tu Linkage Group Of Maize, R. A. Emerson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The Ga, or “gamete” gene of maize can be studied only or principally by its disturbance of normal Mendelian ratios of contrasted characters differentiated by genes linked with it. The amount of this disturbance can be used as a measure of the intensity of linkage between Ga and other genes of the su-Tu group.
Disturbance of the 3:1 ratio of starchy, Su, to sugary, su, endosperm has been most studied. In one of the early papers on Mendelian inheritance, Correns (1902) reported that, although crosses between most starchy and sugary varieties gave an F2 ratio of …
Food For Children With Special Reference To Dietaries For Chinese Children, Dzi-Chi Gin
Food For Children With Special Reference To Dietaries For Chinese Children, Dzi-Chi Gin
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The chief functions of food may be said to be three--growth, maintenance and proper functioning. Food consists of those substances which yield energy, build tissue, or regulate body processes. The essential substances of an adequate food supply are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, mineral salts, water, cellulose and vitamins Obviously these requirements vary with each individual child, since height weight, shape, age, sex, and nervous tension must all be considered as determining factors in health, while any diseased condition, sometimes unsuspected, presents additional complications. The first special characters of Chinese food is the preponderance of cereal grain of one kind or another--rice, …

The Vitamin A Content Of Skimmilk, Standardized Milk, And Cream From Different Breeds Of Cows, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A study was made of the vitamin A content of skimmilk, of milk standardized by the addition of separated milk, and of cream. Rats whose body stores of vitamin A had been depleted by being fed a vitamin A deficient ration were fed either skimmilk, standardized milk, or cream as a source of vitamin A. Approximately 750 rats were used in nine experiments. From the results of these experiments the following conclusions were drawn: (1) that the vitamin A content of milk is associated largely with the butterfat and that separated milk containing a small quantity of fat contains only …

An Annotated List Of The Snails Of Dallas County Texas, Elmer P. Cheatum, Charles E. Burt
Field and Laboratory
Although great advances have been made in the study of many groups of Texas animals, the knowledge of the Mollusca is still very meager....[I]t is apparent that the study of Texas snails is only just begun and that there exists a need for careful and continued collecting in numerous counties. A molluscan survey of individual counties has been started by the senior author with the hope of ultimately bringing together a large mass of data to support a comprehensive and authentic treatment of the snails of Texas.

A Geographic Study Of The Carrollton Area, Robert C. Dunlap, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Field and Laboratory
The Carrollton Area, as considered in this paper, includes approximately seventy square miles in the northwestern corner of Dallas County. Two small towns, Carrollton (popu lation 689) and Farmers Branch (population 400), were im portant centers in the early days of settlement, but the rapid growth of Dallas, a few miles to the southeast, has delegated to these communities the roles of satellites to the larger urban center. Three railroads intersect at Carrollton, and both towns are on the Dallas-Denton paved highway.

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Vertebrate Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This present paper is chiefly concerned with the distribution of animals. The environmental and faunal conditions of Western Kansas have not been studied, and they are rapidly changing, due to human occupancy of the region. Therefore, a major object of this report is to put on record information in regard to the present vertebrate animal life in Western Kansas. Profound changes in the native conditions have already been recognized; for example, many animals have become extinct, and others are gradually vanishing. It is in the hope of contributing something of the facts of the status of the species in this …
