A Bioecological Study Of Pinyon Pine-Juniper Association At Juan Tabo In The Sandia Mountains Of New Mexico, Robert Hallett Parker

A survey of literature shows that no community or bioecological study has ever been made of the pinyon pine-juniper association as it occurs in the Upper Sonoran Life Zone in New Mexico and southern Colorado. This deficiency of knowledge relative to the pinyon pine-juniper community is in direct contrast to several studies that have been made of the same community in Arizona and Utah by the presence of dominant trees of entirely different species. Relative to the association in New Mexico, one of the dominant tress, the pinyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm), has been investigated, but no bioecological and …

It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of quantitative investigations of the choline esterase activity in the rat in various states of its life cycle. Some work has been done on the acetylcholine content (Welsh and Hyde, 1944) in rats of various ages, but there is no reference in the literature to complete the quantitative determinations of the choline esterase activity in the whole brain of the rat throughout its life cycle.

A great deal has been accomplished in developing methods of restoring abused lands through seeding, yet there is much to be desired in refinement of techniques and in substantiation of previous experimental results. Controversial opinions as to the best season of planting indicate that additional trials are needed. New species need to be introduced, developed, and proved. Methods are needed which lead to more efficient utilization of those factors limiting the degree of success in establishment. Since moisture is the most predominant limiting factor throughout the arid and semi-arid range land, special attention is given to more efficient utilization of …

Recently, a professor of entomology sent an urgent letter of inquiry relative to the association of German naturalists called, in the older writings, the "Leopoldina," or, more fully, the "Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum." He had read an account of Jacob Boll, early Texan naturalist, and therein had noted his election (March 1, 1873) to membership in the society. The article stated that, in 1873, the Academy had its seat at Dresden, where its Praeses, Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach had been for many years professor of natural history, and director of the natural history museum. Correlation Between The Rh Factor And Landsteiner Blood Groups, Helen M. Zuelzke

Eighty-five percent of human beings have an agglutinogen similar to that in rhesus monkeys, now called the Rh factor. This natural antibody is comparable to those which make human blood divisible into the Landsteiner groups A, B, AB, and O. This Rh factor is so called because it was first discovered in the blood of rhesus monkeys. Its importance is that it provides an explanations for previously baffling reactions to blood transfusions and the loss of babies by apparently healthy women during or shortly after pregnancy.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae has long been a fungus of economic importance in the baking and beverage fields. A large amount of research has been done on this yeast cytologically and biochemically. However, due to its small size and difficulty in staining, the cytology of the yeast cell remains somewhat in question. Chromosomes and division figures have been demonstrated by several workers, but there still remain sharp differences of opinion as to the nature of the nucleus. Recent work on the genetics of yeast has shown evidence of chromosome division similar to that occurring in higher plants and studies of linkage have …

In the introduction to the unabridged edition of his Study of History (1933), Toynbee comments on the invasion of the field of scientific investigation by the Industrial System: the working up of raw materials ("data") by many individual workers ("scientists") into finished products ("papers," or as so commonly designated, "the literature"), according to more or less standardized methods of mass production ("Research"). A recent report from this laboratory described a method for isolation of low molecular weight compounds by chromatography on a pile of filter paper disks (1). Preliminary experiments have now been completed on the application of this method to the separation of enzymes. It was expected that a mixture of enzymes could be placed near the top of a filter paper pile and fractionated by imposing a gradient (i.e. pH, organic solvent, or salt concentration) on the column, thus taking advantage of a continuous process. Following the observation of Tiselius (2) it also seemed probable that enzyme separations could be …
