An Ecological Study Of Helminths Of Some Wyoming Voles (Microtus Spp.) With A Description Of A New Species Of Nematospiroides (Heligmosomidae: Nematoda), Merle L. Kuns, Robert L. Rausch

An ecological and taxonomic study of the helminth parasites of voles (Microtus spp.) in the Jackson Hole region of Wyoming is reported.

Nematospiroides microti n. sp. from Microtus montanus nanus and M. richardsoni macropus is described and figured.

A cestode, Paranoplocephala infrequens, and a nematode, Syphacia obvelata, were generally distributed throughout the region in all habitats except the sage flats.

A trematode, Quinqueserialis hassalli, was recovered only from voles collected near streams at low altitudes. This was presumably due to the localized distribution of the molluscan intermediate host.

In spite of the importance of the various species of shrews to the biotic community, several aspects of their ecology remain very incompletely known. The helminths parasitic in the more conspicuous small mammals in North America have been studied more or less completely, but those occurring in shrews have been largely disregarded. This situation is particularly inappropriate when one considers that shrews often constitute the most abundant mammalian group in a given area. A survey of the trematode parasites of marine fishes of Tomales and Bodega Bays, California, was instituted In the Spring of 1948. Many adult forms were obtained, but the search progressively narrowed Itself to a study of the larval trematodss of an area of Tomales Bay, known, as Nick's Cove. Here an interesting cystophorous cercaria was discovered in the littoral snail, Thais emarglnata.

This paper is primarily a study of the factors contributing to the distribution of Tegula funebralis and Tegula brunnea in the vicinity of Bodega Bay, California. The two species seldom appear extensively together in the same zone. Tegula brunnea is found on the exposed outer coast of Tomales Point, but not in the immediate zone of Tegula funebralis. Tegula funebralis is found at some points north of Dillon Beach, but it is rarely in the presence of abundant Tegula brunnea. Whlle making studies of the parasites of fishes and amphibians at the Pacific Marine Station, Dillon Beach, California, during August, 1949, the writer encountered a hitherto unreported trypanasome from a female Triturus torosua. From the information obtained from the one smear, which was stained, the animal was presumed to be monomorphic, However, during February, 1950, a search was made expressly for the purpose of' obtaining specimens of this Pacific Coast newt, and of the eight animals examined six were parasitized. The purpose of the present study was (1) to compare the production of specific antibodies in normal animals to that seen in similar animals receiving treatment with a given compound during the immunization period; (2) to correlate these responses with the over-all physiologic response of the animal to the compound; and (3) attempt to account for any variations from the normal by these animals.

The importance of forbs to the livestock diet seems to come from their high percentage of calcium and phosphorus (Runyon, 1947). Furthermore, they also contain a higher amount of moisture (Savage and Heller, 1947) which makes them more succulent and therefore more palatable than the grasses during drought. This condition of greater succulence is due in part at least to _the more deeply penetrating roots of the forbs (Albertson, 1937). Observations also have indicated the possibility of a considerable amount of latex, oils and resins in the green forb plants. Because of the importance of these plants it was thought …

During the decade 1931-1940 it became increasingly apparent that some factor (or factors) besides disease was responsible for much of the variation in yields produced by lots of certified seed potatoes planted in commercial fields and comparative trial plots in the South during midwinter. This bulletin reports investigations into the method of storing western Nebraska seed potatoes as a means of improving the production of the early crop of Triumphs in the Gulf Coast States.

For about three months in 1945, and for a similar period in 1947, I was able to carry on field-work in systematic botany in the southern United States, chiefly in Texas, but with some attention to neighboring states. The work in 1945 was a joint project of Southern Methodist University and the Bureau of Plant Industry, U.S. Department of Agriculture; I was delegated by the Bureau to join field-parties sent out by the University. The work in 1947 was undertaken by the University of Michigan, with the cooperation of Southern Methodist University and of the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University.

The application of one- and two-dimensional paper chromatography to the separation of small amounts of many kinds of compounds has become a well-established and useful technique (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). In general these methods do not handle sufficiently large quantities of materials for isolation and chemical identification. Large columns of starch and other materials have been used satisfactorily for handling larger quantities of mixtures (4). The saponification of esters has been the subject of considerable study, and the technology of manipulation of the reaction well defined. As a result, the reaction has become a quantitative standard for ester analysis. However the comparison of the rates of this reaction with various esters as charaeteristic of them has received little consideration compared to the course of the reaction. The work of Mr. F. E. Adler on the adaptation of fat constants to waxes suggested the problem. The thesis will attempt to ascertain any significant differences in the saponification rates of various esters with regard to their characterization.

In spite of the fact that Pasturella pestis, the the etiological organism of plague, has been reported from fleas and rodents in eleven counties of New Mexico, our knowledge of the fleas of the State has remained very incomplete and extremely meager. Recognizing the marked deficiency regarding our information of the Siphonaptera of New Mexico, I began in the spring of 1948 an investigation that has resulted in adding considerable information to our knowledge of the flea population of our State.
