Since L. O. Howard's (1906) early report on house flies many entomologists have conducted research on these insects. Their reports range from notes on the hibernation of house flies, Musca domestica L., to lengthy papers on the biology and control of house flies and stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.). Early control studies stressed the importance of sanitatioll, screening and the use of mist type contact insecticides. These standard control measures have not, however, received much attention in the United States since Wiesmann (1943) reported on the pro-longed effectiveness of a new insecticide "Gesarol." Most plant viruses transmitted by leafhoppers have not been demonstrated to be infective in extracts. The virus dealt with in this paper causes tumors in certain susceptible plants, is carried by leafhoppers, and like others in that group has proven difficult to detect in extracts. It is our purpose to recount briefly the variety of methods that failed to transmit the virus and to report on the success of insect-to-insect transmission by injection.

Evidence For A Tryptophane Cycle In Neurospora, Francis A. Haskins, Herschel Mitchell

The work of Snell on lactic acid bacteria provided the first evidence that anthranilic acid may act as a precursor to tryptophane in vivo. Since the strains of bacteria which utilize anthranilic acid in the place of tryptophane also use indole, it was not possible to establish the order in which these two precursors occurred. In 1943 Tatum, Bonner and Beadle found that anthranilic acid was accumulated in the culture medium by a Neurospora crassa mutant, strain 10575, which required either tryptophane or indole for growth. The present work involves a further investigation of a Neurospora mutant, C-86, previously mentioned by Lein, Mitchell and Houlahan (1) as one that can utilize anthranilic acid, indole, tryptophan, kynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, and nicotinic acid as supplements for growth. Mutant C-86, when crossed to a “wild-type” strain, was found to differ from this wild type strain, with respect to tryptophan biosynthesis, by a mutation at a single locus. The evidence presented suggests the possibility of a common precursor to the aromatic amino acids.

An effort is here made to assemble all of our knowledge of all adult trematodes which have been found in the fishes of the Pacific Marine Station Area. This includes publications, unpublished material such as graduate theses, and specimens herein described for the first time. It is hoped that this endeavor will facilitate further investigation in trematodology and that this paper will be an aid in identification of trematodes subsequently discovered.

Very little is known of the development, life history, economic importance, of biological relationships of larval trematodes, especially in their molluscan and arthropod hosts on the Pacfic Coast. The comparatively few contributions to our knowledge have been from scattered and fragmentary observations. The purpose of this study was to expand our knowledge and to lay a foundation for further work on trematode life cycles in marine organisms. The area selected for special investigation was Nick's Cove, Tomales Bay, California.

PALEONTOLOGICAL and archaeological discoveries were made near Cambridge, Nebraska, by the University of Nebraska State Museum field party in the spring of 1947 (Schultz and Frankforter, 1948, pp. 279-280) . Fossils and artifacts were found in situ at the base of a fifty-foot terrace on Lime Creek (University of Nebraska State Museum Localities Ft-41 and Ft-42) and on Medicine Creek just below the mouth of Lime Creek (Ft-50). Lime Creek is located (Fig. 1) in southwestern Nebraska in the southeastern part of Frontier County. It is a tributary of Medicine Creek which in turn is a tributary to the Republican …

Although the herpetofauna of Kentucky is extensive and varied. it has received much less attention than that of most other states. Many herpetologists have reported on various phases of the state's amphibians and reptiles, but for the most part these reports are discrete, either pertaining to a collection, or a generic or specific study. Hence, there is no single adequate work which aptly describes the herpetology of Kentucky as a whole. It has been well established that chemical and physical factors exert a marked effect upon the plankton population in bodies of water. However, the literature reveals the fact that the same chemical and physical factors not only produce a different effect upon plankton in different bodies of water, but are not consistent in their effects upon plankton in like bodies of water. Ever since the first publication, in 1919, on megasporogenesis in Zea mays, some confusion has existed regarding the detailed sequence of certain changes in the development of the megagametophyte. The present study was made in an attempt to clarify such disputed points.

The examination of more than 200 species of birds by Rausch during the past few years, has disclosed a number of interesting strigeids, some of which are considered in the present paper. Three species appear to be undescribed and two of these are of particular interest in that they occur in passeriform birds, a group rarely parasitized by strigeids. In addition to the descriptions of the new species, remarks concerning Hysteromorpha triloba (Rudolphi, 1819) are included.

A logical approach to the question of how much forage is taken by livestock would be, it seems, to study first the growth habits of the important species of p:i.sture and range grasses in the areas where they are used. The purpose of this report, therefore, was to study the development of several species of perennial grasses in the mixed prairie of west-central Kamas from near the beginning of the grazing season until the grasses had reached maturity.

Schizophyllum commune Fries is a member of the Hymeno­ mycetes. This genus has long intrigued mycologists because of the peculiar "spliit gills'' it characteristically possesses. For a long time, however, not much importance was attached to the fungus until it was reported from many parts or the world and its. pathogenicity as a wood-destroying agaric established.
