Field and Laboratory
The bryophyte flora of Texas has hardly been touched. Striking climatic extremes, with variations in time of extreme cold and rainfall, may cause an abundance of plants in one season and a failure in other years. The vast size of the state makes it difficult to cover favorable terrain at propitious seasons. However, the chief cause of the scarcity of collections may be due to the lack of resident collectors who have been and are interested in bryology.

Effects Of Rotenone And Some Common Herbicides On Fish-Food Organisms, Max Zischkale

While considerable experimentation has been done on aquatic plant control and reduction of fish populations by chemicals, we know little of how these agents act on those smaller animals that serve as fish food…. I have attempted here to find what happens to a few of the smaller crustaceans and immature aquatic insects (as well as two of the common genera of aquatic snails) when standardized concentrations of the more commonly used herbicides are introduced into the water. I have also employed the fish poison, rotenone.

The original description of Eudamus? yuccae Bdv. & LeC. was presented in the form of a water color painting, "Histoire generale et iconographie des Lepidopteres et des Chenilles de I'Amerique Sep tentrionale, plate 70, 1833". There was no verbal description. Even though Boisduval and LeConte made no reference as to where their drawings came from, it is now known that John Abbot, of Georgia, prepared some of these, including the one of their yuccae.

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

In 1948 the insect collections at the University of Nebraska State Museum were placed in the care of the author. Prior to that date curatorial duties were assumed or assigned to full time teaching or research staff members. As would be expected under the latter circumstances, the organization of study material and types was neglected in many families and genera. Since 1948 type material, because of its intrinsic value, has received considerable attention. All primary and representative secondary types have been assembled in three museum cases and one slide cabinet for curatorial and study convenience.

Methods of insect control are sometimes classified under the four following headings—Quarantine, Cultural Methods, Biological Control and Chemical Treatments. Each method has its own particular part to play in preventing the spread and multiplication of insect pests and it is essential for maximum results that everyone—whether he be a commercial grower or a backyard gardener—has a general understanding of the principles involved.

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). Since 1322 these crude methods of transferring semen have been perfected until approximately four million cows were inseminated in the United …

Life Cycle Studies On Stephanostomum Pacificum, A New Species Of Trematode, From The Pacific Marine Station Area, James Frank Hughes

This report summarizes the results of a study on the life cycle of a member of the trematode family Acanthooolpidae, genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899, which was carried on during the summers of 1948, 1949, 1951, and the winter of 1948-49 at the Marine Station of the College or the Pacific at Dillon Beach, California. Only one previous experimental work has been done on the life cycle of any member of this family. Martin (1939) reported the life cycle of Stephanostomum tenue (Linton) which he had obtained at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Modifications of his technical procedures have been used in this …
