Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch

A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …

A number of inquiries have recently been received by the Department of Agriculture concerning the legality of keeping rabbits as pets. The Chief Vermin Control Officer (Mr. A. R. Tomlinson) states that anyone keeping or purchasing rabbits as pets should note that the Vermin Act provides a heavy penalty for the keeping of live rabbits unless a permit has been obtained. This applies to all types of rabbits. The permits allow domestic breeds of rabbits to be kept as pets conditional upon them being confined in hutches within rabbit proof enclosures. They must not be permitted to roam loose on …

The relative times involved in the various phases of cell division is basic to problems of tissue growth, but the quantitative relation of mitotic and intermitotic times have received very little attention until recently. Even data on the quantitative comparison of mammalian growth rates are very limited. The rate of growth of any tissue is directly proportional to the number of new cells added to the tissue over and above the number of old cells being constantly destroyed.

In view of the fact that there obviously are metabolic and oxidative disturbances in the kidney caused by adrenalectomy, this investigation was attempted in an effort to obtain information concerning the following:

(1) Whether the rate of oxygen consumption of rat kidney tissue slices is a function of time; to determine whether the decreased metabolic function occurred immediately upon adrenalectomy or if an initial rise and then a falling off took place, as seemed to be indicated in the work done by Butcher (1943).

It has long been known that various stresses and stimuli elicit responses in the animal body, and since the stating of Cannon's "emergency function" (1929), the adrenal medullary hormones have been credited with exciting many of the instantaneous responses to the animal body.

The experiment was designed to determine: (1) whether nor-epinephrine has effects on the blood elements different from those seen after epinephrine treatment; (2) whether the dosage of hormone employed will affect the type of response obtained; and (3) whether the demedullated rat responds to the adrenal medullary hormones in the same pattern as the intact rat.

Samples from all trees and shrubs of different species were collected, classified, pressed, dried and mounted. The rapid expansion of the poultry industry is due in no small measure to the introduction of the cabinet type of incubator. However, the widespread use of these machines in which large numbers of chickens are confined, for a period, to a very small space, has also favoured the spread of many diseases, and unless steps are taken to prevent the introduction of these diseases to the newly-hatched chickens disastrous losses are likely to occur.

The boxelder bug, Leptocoria trivittatue (say), is a hanipterous insect belonging to the family corisidae. Although it rarely is a pest of agricultural crops, its habit of invading homes and other buildings for hibernation and to warm itself has made it an annoying household pest. It has proven to be a difficult insect to control. Only a few of the contact insecticides, useful in control of related insect pests, have given satisfactory control of the Boxelder Bug. The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.
