Geographic Variation In Toads Of The Debilis Group Of Bufo, Ottys Sanders, Hobart M. Smith

Field and Laboratory

In 1938, Taylor (1938,513) for the first time pointed out the existence of two distinct forms of toads in the assemblage previously referred to Bufo debilis. These he designated as the species Bufo insidior Girard and Bufo debilis Girard. Since then much confusion has reigned, especially with respect to the range and status of the southeasterly form regarded as B. debilis.

A Study Of The Correlation Of Acid Production And Population Growth In Escherichia Coli, Proteus Morgani And Shigella Sonnei, Lolita R. Fritz

Biology ETDs

During the course of growth in a bacterial culture, cellular development and reproduction take place in a regular and orderly manner. It is possible to observe definite phases in the normal growth of a culture. Some method of evaluation of the growth must be used in order to determine the population change or the effect of chemical and physical environment on bacterial cells. Numerous methods have been tried, employing the total population number or rate of production is used in this investigation as an indication of population growth of Escherichia coli, Proteus morgani and Shigella sonnei.

The Saponification Of Esters, Robert Delong Sullivan Jun 1951

The Saponification Of Esters, Robert Delong Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

The kinetics of chemical reactions has always been a very intriguing subject. It is the tool by which the mechanisms of chemical reactions are elucidated. Upon it partly rate the advisability of utilization of a particular reaction for industrial purposes. From it the field or catalysis has sprung. Chemical kinetics. is concerned with all branches of chemistry. Conversely, all branches of chemistry have an interest in it.

This thesis will attempt to do two things. First, the order, specific rate constant, and the energy of activation will be determined from the saponification of several esters. second, the introduction will cover, …

Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy Jun 1951

Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

During the period of October to April of the winter of 1950-51, an ecological study was undertaken of a population or passerine birds wintering in a segment of the Utah Lake Shore. Available winter weather data indicated that although such factors as precipitation, temperature, and wind may often be severe, they are not critical enough to prevent a fairly large population of passerine birds from spending the winter months in the study locale. Five fairly distinct plant communities can be recognized in the area. There is evidence which indicates that certain passerine bird species are especially dependent on a particular …

A Preliminary Study Of The Distribution Of Fleas In Utah Known To Be Capable And Potential Vectors Of Plague, Dorald M. Allred Jun 1951

A Preliminary Study Of The Distribution Of Fleas In Utah Known To Be Capable And Potential Vectors Of Plague, Dorald M. Allred

Theses and Dissertations

Plague outbreaks in the past have been disastrous where domestic rats and their fleas of certain species were common. Plague has been known to occur in most parts of the world (Robertson 1923), and has occurred as human epidemics for many centuries (Dubos 1948).

The In Vitro Determination Of Human Blood Oxygen Saturation In The Presence Of High Concentrations Of Carbon Dioxide, Elizabeth D. Armstrong May 1951

The In Vitro Determination Of Human Blood Oxygen Saturation In The Presence Of High Concentrations Of Carbon Dioxide, Elizabeth D. Armstrong

Biology ETDs

Mayow’s work in 1673 is cited by Landois (1905) as the first demonstration of the liberation of gases from blood in a vacuum. In 1863 Meyer, Ludwig, and Pfleuger established that the oxygen leaving the lung was transported in a combined form with hemoglobin and that the oxygen was released into the tissues accompanied by a change in color of the blood.

A Special Respiratory Mechanism In The Adrenal Gland Of Cattle, Martin Roeder May 1951

A Special Respiratory Mechanism In The Adrenal Gland Of Cattle, Martin Roeder

Biology ETDs

The first definite evidence for the existence of an enzyme which catalyzes the biological oxidation of phenols was presented was presented in 1896 by Bourquelot and Bertrand. By 1902 the latter had characterized the enzyme as acting directly on the amino acid tyrosine, and had demonstrated its action against other substances, including p-hydroxyphenylethylamine, p-cresol, and phenol.

The Life Cycle Of The Ostracod Cypricercus Reticulatus (Zaddach, 1844) Sars, 1928, Louise E. Goeke May 1951

The Life Cycle Of The Ostracod Cypricercus Reticulatus (Zaddach, 1844) Sars, 1928, Louise E. Goeke

Biology ETDs

The purpose of the present study is to describe the stages in the life-cycle of the fresh-water ostracod, Cypricercus reticulatus (Zaddach,1844) Sars, 1928 of the family Cypridae. This particular species was chosen primarily because of availability. The selection of this species was fortunate since C. reticulatus was found to be easily adapted to laboratory conditions. In addition, the form was a fortunate selection because the period of time required for reproduction is relatively brief and the species reproduces parthenogenetically, thus eliminating difficulties incident to impregnation of the females.

The Effects Of Intraperitoneal Injections Of Methylene Blue On Sarcoma 37 In Mice, Jennifer Sullivan May 1951

The Effects Of Intraperitoneal Injections Of Methylene Blue On Sarcoma 37 In Mice, Jennifer Sullivan

Student Scholarship

This research investigates the quantitative effects of methylene blue on the growth of transplanted sarcoma 37 in Swiss mice. While some previous literature suggested that oral administration of this thiazine dye could inhibit certain carcinomas, this study focuses on the results of direct intraperitoneal injections. The experimental process involved injecting mice with varying concentrations of the dye and allowing a nine-day growth period before removing the tumors for microscopic analysis. The primary metric for determining growth effects was the mitotic count, which involved averaging the number of dividing cells across multiple sections and fields for each tumor.

The results indicate …

Soil Nitrate, Total Nitrogen And Organic Matter In Relation To Dry-Farming, Krishnappa Ramaiah May 1951

Soil Nitrate, Total Nitrogen And Organic Matter In Relation To Dry-Farming, Krishnappa Ramaiah

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Dry farming has been defined as production of useful crops, without irrigation, on lands that receive an annual precipitation of 20 inches or less. In some regions the term dry farming is applied to farming without irrigation under annual precipitation of 30 inches or less. Although there is no sharp demarkation between dry farming and humid farming, the term dry farming always means farming under difficulties due to limited annual rainfall.

The relationship of standard length to weight is described by the formula W = 0.000022 L …

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill May 1951

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The assignment of genetic factors to definite loci in the hereditary mechanism has been a great step in the progress of biology. Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.

Although there is a vast amount of literature dealing with inheritance in barley, yet knowledge of the subject is still very limited. The mode of inheritance of about one hundred …

Fertilizer Trials On Dryland Winter Wheat, I. G. Sampson May 1951

Fertilizer Trials On Dryland Winter Wheat, I. G. Sampson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wheat is one of the major crops of Utah and for more than 50 years farmers have been raising wheat on the dry lands of the state. The system they use is known as the alternate cropping or crop-follow system and consists of one year of crop alternating with one year of clean cultivation known as fallow.

Wheat removes a considerable amount of the natural plant food elements from the soil each year. This is especially true of nitrogen. According to Bracken and Greaves (9) the original low supply of nitrogen in most Utah soils together with the depleting effects …

The Food Of Pond Fish In Northern Utah, Robert L. Eberhardt May 1951

The Food Of Pond Fish In Northern Utah, Robert L. Eberhardt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A series of ponds in northern Utah supplied mainly by artesian water was poisoned with rotenone during 1949-50. Four hundred and seventy-three fish were obtained for a food habits study, and of these fish, 423, or 89 percent, had food in their stomachs. The species studied were largemouth bass, green sunfish, common bluegill, and black bullhead. Largemouth bass had the widest variety of diet throughout the year but also had the highest percentage of empty stomachs. Green sunfish and black bullhead had the least diverse food habits. Twenty-nine different food items were recorded; those used most commonly were green sunfish, …
