Bulletin No. 373 - Biennial Report Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, 1952-1954
UAES Bulletins
Our way of life is based on the ability of our agriculture to produce abundantly, efficiently, and at a low cost; and the position of agriculture today is largely a result of the research efforts of the state agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. In the 66 years since the establishment of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, its scientists have found solutions to many of the problems peculiar to its location, topography, and climate. It is logical to rely on these same research forces to solve the problems of the future.

Influence Of Atmospheric And Soil Moisture Conditions On Diurnal Variations In Relative Turgidity Of Potato Leaves, H. O. Werner
Influence Of Atmospheric And Soil Moisture Conditions On Diurnal Variations In Relative Turgidity Of Potato Leaves, H. O. Werner
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The experimental work reported herein was planned to determine: 1. The extent and nature of the changes of the relative turgidity (R.T.) of leaves of the potato plant during the diurnal cycle. 2. The extent to which R.T. of potato leaves is influenced by atmospheric conditions, soil moisture, variety and age of plants. 3. The extent to which visible evidence of water shortage in leaves is indicative of water loss from them as revealed by R.T. and the extent to which this relationship varies with different varieties. 4. The nature of the relationships between morphological characteristics of leaves and stems …

Bulletin No. 370 - The Superb Plant Bug, Adelphocoris Superbus (Uhler): Its Life History And Its Relation To Seed Development In Alfalfa, Charles J. Sorenson, Lowell Cutler
UAES Bulletins
Infestations of the superb plant bug, Adelphocoris superbus (Uhler), in Utah alfalfa fields first came to the attention of entomologists of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station during their investigations of the seed chalcid and lygus bug problems of alfalfa seed production in the Uinta Basin from 1926 to 1934. Because of its occurrence in considerable numbers, particularly in first crop alfalfa fields with thin stands, the superb plant bug was suspected of interfering with seed development. Consequently an investigation of the activities of this insect was begun in the summer of 1932 and continued through that of 1933.

The Succession Of Vegetation On A Southern Utah Sand Dune, Elias S. Castle
The Succession Of Vegetation On A Southern Utah Sand Dune, Elias S. Castle
Theses and Dissertations
The sand dunes lying ten miles northwest of Kanab in Kane County, Utah, support a sparse plant cover with four species dominating the vegetation: Psoralea stenostachys, Sophora stenophylla, Oryzopsis hymenoides, and Wyethia scabra var. attenuata. Of these Psoralea and Wyethia are endemic to the dunes or to a limited area which includes the dunes. The pineer species gain a start in the valleys between dunes and occupy the area only until sand covers them or until sand is blown away from their roots. Stabilization of the soils is not permanently in the interdune valleys and the dunes continue to wander. …

Measurement Of Residual Lung Capacities And Ventilatory Efficiency By The Nitrogen Clearance Method, Elizabeth Roorbach
Measurement Of Residual Lung Capacities And Ventilatory Efficiency By The Nitrogen Clearance Method, Elizabeth Roorbach
Biology ETDs
Essential to an understanding of the behavior of the lung is a knowledge of its total gas capacity and those fractions of it which are utilized in the process of normal breathing. Only when these volumes are known, it is possible to make an appraisal of the efficiency of the pulmonary ventilation in maintaining physiologically adequate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the alveolar spaces with a minimum of ventilatory effort.
A Study Of An Unusually Heat Resistant Variant Of Bacilius Circulans, Roberta D. Demaret
A Study Of An Unusually Heat Resistant Variant Of Bacilius Circulans, Roberta D. Demaret
Biology ETDs
The problem herein described was initiated while following the growth rate of a culture over a ten-hour period. A flask of polypeptone agar had been held in a 47-degree Celsius water bath to maintain it melted so that the plates could be poured periodically. The plates poured during the last two or three hours were found to be heavily contaminated with a Gram-positive, aerobic, sporeforming bacillus. Aseptic technique had been used in pouring the plates; however, external contamination was possible over the long pouring interval, so the test was repeated incubating a flask of the sterilized medium in the water …

Locations Of Maximum Numbers Of The Wheat Curl Mite, Aceria Tulipae (K.) (Eriophyidae) On The Winter Wheat Plant During Spring Growth, Edmon J. Kantack, Herbert Knutson
Field and Laboratory
Coincident with investigations on chemical control of wheat curl mite, Aceria tulipae (K.), a vector of wheat-streak mosaic, it was necessary that the area of heaviest and most uniform populations on the wheat plant be determined for mite counts. Both greenhouse screening trials and field application tests of miticides are being conducted currently. Since little is known concerning this mite, certain biological observations are recorded below for the information of other workers.
The Levator Anguli Scapulae In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
The Levator Anguli Scapulae In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
Field and Laboratory
Professor St.-George Jackson Mivart first described the M. levator anguli scapulae in N ecturus in 1869. He noted an origin of the long, slender muscle on the occiput, and an insertion on "the inner side of the dorsum of the scapula.'' Mivart, earlier in the same year, had used the same name· for a homologous muscle in the hell-bender; in this, he apparently adapted Funk's (1827) and Rtidinger's (1868) earlier name. Kingsley (1907) used the name M. levator scapulae for the same muscle, following an earlier pattern set by Carus (1828), Schmidt, Goddard, & van der Hoeven (1864), Humphry (1871) …

Status Of The Wood Thrush In Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup
Status Of The Wood Thrush In Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup
Field and Laboratory
In his Check List of Birds of Dallas County, Texas, Stillwell (1939) designated the Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina (Gmelin), a rare transient. He states: "We rarely see, never hear, the Wood Thrush in Dallas ... ", and gives May 25 as the latest record of its occurrence in the County. Local bird enthusiasts, however, tell me that although the Wood Thrush is not a common spring migrant here, it is certainly not rare.
The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays
The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays
Biology ETDs
It was the purpose of this investigation to develop [a synthetic] medium for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae 1, strain 14-1, originally obtained from the collection at the Army Medical Service Graduate School. Not only was it desirable to grow the cells, but also to grow them in large quantities in the least possible time. Although considerable work has been done in determining the various growth essentials for many of the Shigella group, particularly the Flexner strains of Shigella paradysenteriae, comparatively little has be ascertained regarding those strains included in Shigella dysenteriae.

Biology ETDs
Since the description of the family Chthoniidae by Hansen in 1894, the group has been revamped considerably. Most notable of these revisions are the works of Chamberlin (1931) and Beier (1932). At the present time the family contains twenty genera and several subgenera (unpublished data, C.C. Hoff). The distribution of the family Chthoniidae is cosmopolitan.
