Age And Growth Of The Utah Chub, Gila Atraria (Girard), In Panguitch Lake And Navajo Lake, Utah, From Scales And Opercular Bones, John M. Neuhold

Previous literature indicates the opercular bone as a useful tool for the determination of age and growth of fish. The reliability and validity of this method is tested for two populations of Utah chub. Age and growth are calculated for 222 Utah chub collected from Panguitch Lake and 212 Utah chub collected from Navajo Lake, southern Utah, in 1952-1953 from both scales and opercular bones. Scales are measured with the aid of a projector. Opercular bones are measured directly. The center of growth of the opercular bone is posterior to the posterior lip of the fulcrum. A process of column chromatography of human erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase, using a cationic exchange resin, was investigated as a possible method for the primary partial purification of the enzyme on a large scale. The investigation was based, first; on a detailed study of the enzymatic stability to variation in hydrogen-ion and salt concentrations for periods of time extending to forty eight hours and, second; on an investigation of the degree of adsorption by the resin of the enzyme at various pH values within the pH range of enzyme stability. Our Texas fresh-water Pelecypoda have not been worked systematically for many years. Since the decline of the pearl button industry in the United States, but few publications dealing with the fresh-water mussels have appeared, and of these almost none was from the Southwest.

In all, some fifteen species of animals parasitic upon Necturus have been reported. It is probable that none is exclusively a parasite of Necturus, for nearly all have also been reported from other animals.

Very little has been published concerning the molluscan fauna of Virginia, this being also true for the area under consideration. A preliminary list of the Mollusca of Hanover County was published by J.B.Burch (1952) in which twenty-five species and subspecies of land snails were reported. Several of the land Mollusca of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties were listed by P.R. Burch (1950). These included the snails Discus patulus Deshayes, Haplotrema concavum (Say), Mesodon thyroidus (Say), Stenotrema hirsutum (Say), Triodopsis Fallax (Say), and Ventridens = (zonitoides) arboreus (Say). The growth of this new approach during the past three decades has not only renewed interest in taxonomy among taxonomists, but has also demonstrated to the other disciplines of biological science the implications of taxonomic research to their work. Mineral oils, when emulsified with materials such as soaps of petroleum sulfonates, fatty acids, abietic acid or resin, are referred to as soluble oils. These oils, mixed with water, form stable emulsions which are universally employed as coolants and lubricants for drilling, cutting, and grinding of metals. In addition to the emulsifying agent, soluble oils may also contain fatty oils, disinfectants and emulsion stabilizers.

The secretion of extracellular enzymes by intact cells of higher plants apparently is a rare occurrence. One example of it is the secretion of an extra, cellular amylase by the tissue of a virus-induced tumor from the root of Rumex wetosa L. An amylase is secreted in sufficient quantities by this tissue to enable it to grow as well in vitro on a starch-containing medium as on one containing sucrose.

The metacercaria of Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilush as been reported by Faust (1918; Illinois Biological Monographs 4(1): 1-120) from mesenteries of the squawfish, Ptychocheilus oregonensis (Richardson), and by Hughes and Piszcek (1928; Journal of Parasitology 15: 58-62) and Van Haitsma (1930; Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 49: 140-153) in the northeastern sand shiner, Notropis deliciosus stramineus (Cope). Van Haitsma (1930) found the adults in mergansers, Mergus americanus, M. serrator, Lophodytes cucullatus, and the old squaw duck, Harelda hyemalis. Crustacean spermatozoa are among the most peculiarly modified germ cells in the animal kingdom. Many of their striking cytological specializations may be observed in the sperm cells or Emerita analoga, the so-called sand crab. This animal has been used by the writer for studies on spermatogenesis and on spermatozoan behavior during the summer or 1951, 1952, and 1953 at the Pacific Marine Station.
