Botany In The Graduate Record Examination, Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

In the spring of 1953, a group of American colleges received grants from The Fund for the Advancement of Education (Ford Foundation) to make a study of their undergraduate teaching in liberal arts. As part of the study, many gave the Graduate Record Examination to the entire graduating class, believing that this would give an indication of their success in liberal arts training. Results of the examination in some cases led to curriculum changes. It is these last points which occasion the present remarks.

BOUTELOUA kayi Warnock, sp. nov. Perennis caespitosa ad 50 cm. alta culmis glabris. Foliorum laminae 1.0-1.5 mm. latae, ad 15 cm. longae, supra scabrellae, infra plerumque glabrae; ligula pilorum ca. 0.5 mm. longa. Inflorescentia cum spicis plerumque 15-20 subsessilibus adscendentibus. Spicae cum spiculis 18-20 sessilibus. Glumae 2.5-4 mm. longae mucronatae cum nervo medio scabro, prima brevior; lemma fertile 5-7 mm. longum (aristis 3 patentibus inclusis); palea in aristas 2 ca. 2 mm. longas mutata; flos sterilis in aristas 3 lemma fertile aequantes mutatus.

Field and Laboratory

The large and difficult genus Potentilla is gratifyingly represented in Texas by a very small number of easily distinguished species, but there is no complete or precise published record of those found in the state. The summary here given is based on the collections in the Herbarium of Southern Methodist University, that of the University of Texas, and the Tracy Herbarium of Texas A. & M. College.

Serological techniques have been used in systematic studies for about fifty years. At first their use was confined to those groups of animals offering plentiful supplies of blood, since blood was the tissue most widely used. Recent modifications that employ other tissues have now made possible similar study of groups of smaller animals.

The Back River drains the interior barrens of the Northwest Territories of Canada. According to Blanchet (1930) the river has its headwaters in a high plateau and flows through a sand plain basin (not in accord with conditions of our base camp). The country north of the Back River drainage is of low relief. The river takes a northerly direction for the last one-third of its course. To the east, between the river and Wager Bay, the country is known to be very rugged.

Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

Continual sand deposition on the Lake Erie shore, adjacent to the mouth of the Grand River, has led to the formation of a developing sand dune community and through the years a successional pattern of plant growth. An analysis was made of the general plant composition of the area by means of four transects directed from the bare beach inland. Definite zonation of specific plant species was present throughout the community in parallel formation. Named for the dominant plant types they contained, the major stages were: dune grass, poplar, aspen, and oak.

The life cycle of Fibricola cratera (Barker and Noll, 1915) Dubois, 1932 was reported in 1940 (Cuckler, A. C., Journal of Parasitology 26 (6-Suppl.): 32-33). The writer repeated the life cycle at the University of Iowa in 1948-49 and wishes to add a few observations. Apparently the life cycle of Fibricola texensis Chandler, 1942 (Chandler, A. C., Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 61: 156-167, 1942) is very nearly identical to that of F. cratera. The genus has been reviewed by C. P. Read (Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 67: 165-168, 1948).

During an examination of fish from Turtle River, Arvilta, North Dakota, a new Neascus (larval strigeid) was recovered from the musculature and integument of the northern creek chub, Semotilus a. atromaculatus (Mitchell) and the northern common shiner, Notropis cornutus frontalis (Agassiz). This new species is named in honor of Dr. L. O. NoIf, University of Iowa.
