Accurate knowledge of plant and field characteristics is crucial for irrigation management. Irrigation can potentially be better managed by utilizing data collected from various sensors installed on different platforms. The accuracy and repeatability of each data source are important considerations when selecting a sensing system suitable for irrigation management. The objective of this study was to compare data from multispectral (red and near-infrared bands) and thermal (long wave thermal infrared band) sensors mounted on different platforms to investigate their comparative usability and accuracy. The different sensor platforms included stationary posts fixed on the ground, the lateral of a center pivot …

Imagine elementary school students understanding inputs and outputs, choosing appropriate sensors, and programming an autonomous robot. Imagine middle school students learning about PID control and creating advanced programs for sensor-based decision making. Imagine high school students using CAD to design drive trains, manufacturing parts with CNC machine tools, using finite element analysis to adjust the design, ordering custom components from a machine shop, using image processing for target recognition, and applying path planning and motion control. We have witnessed all of these skills. They happened outside of traditional classrooms, and they were all student-driven.
Yes, it’s true, and it’s amazing. …

After a long period of development, blockchain innovation has received much attention from scholarsand industry practitioners alike. This innovation allows the issuance of smart contracts, which are utilised to automateand execute deals amongst clients. Blockchain is also being used nowadays by a few IT applications as a specialisedfoundation. This technology also prevents the duplication of information similar to what is being done with Bitcoinand other cryptocurrencies. Specifically, Bitcoin records are virtually impossible to alter as this cryptocurrency isbeing traded amongst hundreds of thousands of servers. Therefore, to launch a successful attack, the aggressor shouldchange the Bitcoin records of 51% of …

Effect Of Reduction Methods On The Properties Of Composite Films Of Bacterial Cellulose-Silver Nanoparticles, Ratchanon Jenkhongkarn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Composite films of bacterial cellulose-silver nanoparticles (BC-Ag) were prepared by different methods of in-situ reduction of silver, using sodium hydroxide, ascorbic acid, chitosan, and UV irradiation. The effects of the reduction methods on their properties were investigated. The chitosan-reduced composite exhibited dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within the nanocellulose matrix with the smallest size, while the ascorbic-reduced composite displayed the largest size. The incorporation of AgNPs tended to reduce the crystallinity of the composites, except for the ascorbic-reduced composite which exhibited an increase in crystallinity. Mechanical testing revealed that the ascorbic-reduced composite had the highest Young's modulus of 8960 MPa, whereas …

Co-Effects Of Silver Nanoparticles And Microplastics On Nitrifying Microorganisms From Wastewater Treatment Plants And Their Activities, Nampetch Charanaipayuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and microplastics are emerging water contaminants of the decade. They share a similar fate and transport in wastewater treatment plants as they tend to accumulate in sludge of aeration tanks. Since both contaminants have negative effects on microbial growth, the ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in the aeration tanks are at risk for inhibition and consequently nitrification process fails. This study investigated the effects of AgNPs and microplastics on ammonia-oxidizing activity and community. No inhibition of ammonia oxidation rate was observed at 0.1 mg/L AgNPs. Partial inhibition was found at 0.5 and 1 mg/L AgNPs, while complete inhibition occurred at …

Synthetic Flavonoid Derivatives With Antiviral Activity Against Dengue And Chikungunya Viruses, Van Cao
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Dengue infection is one significant global health issue, as climate change exacerbated the spread of mosquito vectors. The Chikungunya virus is also a re-emerging arbovirus infection, which is transmitted by some similar vectors. Currently, no commercial antiviral drug is available to treat them. Previous reports suggested that several flavonoid derivatives inhibited mosquito-borne flaviviruses even at submicromolar levels, and one of them is a halogenated flavone derivative, 8-bromobaicalein, was a potential dengue and Zika replication inhibitor targeting flaviviral polymerase and also 3CLpro of SARS-CoV-2. This study characterized that 8-bromobaicalein inhibited chikungunya virus replication with EC50 of 0.49 ± 0.11 µM in …

Role Of Mtorc2 In The Regulation Of Glycolytic Metabolism In Glioblastoma Through Pkcδ Phosphorylation, Chatchapon Chuenjit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and highly aggressive primary cancer within the central nervous system (CNS). The mTORC2 is a primary regulator of glycolytic reprogramming in highly malignant cells through both Akt-dependent and AKT-independent pathways. However, the mechanism that cancer glycolysis through AKT-independent pathways remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of mTORC2/ PKCδ signaling-regulated glycolysis of GBM cells by AKT-independent mechanisms. We examined the impact of various pharmacological inhibitors on the suppression of mTORC1, mTORC2, AKT, and PKCδ signaling. Our results revealed that the phosphorylation of PKCδ at residue serine 664 was diminished by AZD8055, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study aimed to isolate γ-oryzanol from the crude oil acid fraction (a by-product of rice bran oil refinery) and to evaluate their Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) inhibitory activity. Chromatographic fractionation of the crude oil acid fraction gave 3 isolated fractions of γ-oryzanol containing cycloartenyl ferulate, campesteryl ferulate, sitosteryl ferulate, stigmasteryl ferulate, and cyclobranyl ferulate. The γ-oryzanol containing cycloartenyl ferulate and campesteryl ferulate as major component showed good ACE2 inhibitory activity with the IC50 value 10.57 μg/mL. Furthermore, the 19 structures of γ-oryzanol were also studied for its interaction against ACE2 through molecular docking. Based on the in-silico study, ADME …

Link Prediction Using Deep Learning Approach For Type 2 Diabetes Drug Repurposing, Sothornin Mam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
There is still no effective treatment for type 2 diabetes, which has been on the rise for years. By repositioning current medications for new indications, drug repurposing can aid in the discovery of novel medications. Deep learning has recently been applied to this problem via link prediction utilizing a graph representation that learns from either the structure of a graph or the semantic meaning of entity text. However, because they used a single representation as the basis for their work without making any model improvements, earlier attempts still had restricted performance. In this study, we suggest a new deep-learning approach …

Exploring Flavor Enhancer Metabolites Of Chaya Leaves Cnidoscolus Spp., Nuti Hutasingh
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Umami, described as brothy and meat-like flavor, is one of the key factors in the successful savory food product development. It acts as a taste enhancer and improves overall acceptability. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the most common synthetic compound added to savory providing umami taste. Many consumers, however, have a negative attitude toward this substance. Thus, natural ingredients providing umami taste as a substitute for MSG could be beneficial for commercial purposes. Chaya (Cnidoscolus spp.) is a fast-growing and drought-resistant plant whose leaves have been widely used as a dried umami seasoning. However, the key umami substances in the leaves …

Effect Of Peptide Hydrolysates From Riceberry On Reducing Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress In Cells, Theeranuch Jaroenchuensiri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Oxidative stress, resulting from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, contributes to diseases and induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Antioxidants can mitigate ER stress. We investigated synthetic peptides from riceberry rice hydrolysates against ER stress. Ten peptides were evaluated for toxicity and antioxidant activity in SH-SY5Y and L929 cell lines. Peptides ID 3 to ID 5 ,and ID 10 showed significant antioxidant activity protecting cells from oxidative stress induced by IAA and H2O2. These peptides alleviated ER stress induced by TM, as observed through fluorescence microscopy analysis using ConA dye. Peptides ID 3 to 5 reduced ConA …

Effect Of Candida Glabrata Β-Glucans On Immunosuppressive Properties Of Dendritic Cells, Phawida Tummamunkong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
β-glucan is a polysaccharide and consists of the backbone of β-(1, 3)-glucan and/or β-(1, 6)-glucan structures. β-glucans are extracted from the cell wall of Candida sp, including Candida glabrata. Interestingly, the biological activity of Candida β-glucan has been represented as a stimulator in the mechanism of immune responses. Dendritic cells are powerful antigen-presenting cells that play a significant role in both innate and adaptive immunity. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of C. glabrata β-glucans on dendritic cell (DC) immunologic responses. Firstly, bone marrow-derived DCs (BMDCs) were induced with C. glabrata β-glucans in a dose-dependent manner. The expression …

Generation Of Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells From Fcgr2b Deficient Lupus-Prone Mice For The Model Of Sle Therapy, Phuriwat Khiewkamrop
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDCs) are DCs with an immunoregulatory function, which can induce regulatory T cells (Tregs) and suppress the immune response. Currently, tolDCs-based treatment has become a promising therapeutic approach for organ transplantation and autoimmune disease. FcgRIIB is an inhibitory receptor widely expressed in B cells, myeloid cells, and DCs. The ablation of FcgRIIB in the murine model shows a spontaneous development of a lupus-like disease and might affect other immune cell regulation. There was limited information on tolDC induction in FcgRIIB defective mice. Thus, in this study, we studied the generation of tolDCs from the bone marrow-derived dendritic …

The Inhibitory Effect Of Combined Human Cathelicidin With Antibiotics On Antibiotic-Resistant Cutibacterium Acnes, Rakwaree Sriharat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cutibacterium acnes is one of the major factors involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris which sometimes develops antibiotic resistance particularly clindamycin- and doxycycline-resistant C. acnes. In this study, human cathelicidin (LL-37) which is a type of human antimicrobial peptide against a wide range of microorganisms was used. We investigated the antimicrobial activity of LL-37 on C. acnes isolated from patients with acne at the King Chulalongkorn Hospital using broth microdilution. Moreover, the synergistic effects of LL-37 with clindamycin and doxycycline were investigated using checkerboard microdilution, and time-killing assays. The cytotoxicity of LL-37 was also evaluated by MTT assay. The …

In this study, a plant from the Orchidaceae family, Aerides falcata, was investigated for its chemical constituents and anti-neuroinflammatory activity. A total of ten compounds were isolated and characterized. The isolated compounds included a new compound which was named aerifalcatin and nine known compounds: n-eicosyl-trans-ferulate, denthyrsinin, 2,4-dimethoxy-3,7-dihydroxyphenanthrene, 2,7-dihydroxy-3,4,6-trimethoxyphenanthrene, 3,7-dihydroxy-2,4,6-trimethoxyphenanthrene, agrostonin, syringaresinol, trans-n-feruloyltyramine, and trans-n-coumaroyltyramine. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their anti-neuroinflammatory activity, except for trans-n-coumaroyltyramine, which was excluded due to its insufficient amount. In vitro testing was conducted on LPS-induced BV2 microglia cells to evaluate their potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity using NO inhibition model. Minocycline, a neuroinflammatory modulator, was …
Development Of Chromatographic Methods For Geographical Indication In Thai Pineapples, Worakan Chutakool
Development Of Chromatographic Methods For Geographical Indication In Thai Pineapples, Worakan Chutakool
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Geographical indication (GI), or its equivalent intellectual property tools, is widely used in many countries, including Thailand, to identify specific properties and uniqueness of a product that are related to its production origin. In the case of agricultural products, geographical location, weather, and soil nutrients affect their properties such as flavor and texture. In this study, a chemical method was conducted to attempt to distinguish pineapples based on their origins. This was done by collecting chemical profiles from carotenoids by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Thereafter, these chemical data were later processed by chemometric analysis to classify …

Quantifying historical patterns of fire regimes in peatlands can help contextualise current fire behaviour and aid in planning on ecosystem and landscape scales. However, current methods for detecting the evidence of past fires in peat soils are laborious or expensive. Our goal was to develop an effective and inexpensive method for detecting pyrogenic carbon (PyC) concentration in peat which could be used to estimate the occurrence of fires by analysis of discrete soil samples. We correlated diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) measurements of peat, and admixtures of peat and PyC, with nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) estimates of PyC …

What Makes Wildfires Destructive In California?, Alexandra D. Syphard, Jon E. Keeley, Mike Gough, Mitchell Lazarz, John Rogan
Geography
As human impacts from wildfires mount, there is a pressing need to understand why structures are lost in destructive fires. Despite growing research on factors contributing to structure loss, fewer studies have focused on why some fires are destructive and others are not. We characterized overall differences between fires that resulted in structure loss (“destructive fires”) and those that did not (“non-destructive wildfires”) across three California regions. Then, we performed statistical analyses on large fires only (≥100 ha) to distinguish the primary differences between large destructive large fires and large non-destructive fires. Overall, destructive fires were at least an order …
The Influence Of Burn Severity On Post-Fire Spectral Recovery Of Three Fires In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Jaclyn Guz, Florencia Sangermano, Dominik Kulakowski
The Influence Of Burn Severity On Post-Fire Spectral Recovery Of Three Fires In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Jaclyn Guz, Florencia Sangermano, Dominik Kulakowski
Geography
Increased wildfire activity and altered post-fire climate in the Southern Rocky Mountains has the potential to influence forest resilience. The Southern Rocky Mountains are a leading edge of climate change and have experienced record-breaking fires in recent years. The change in post-fire regeneration and forest resilience could potentially include future ecological trajectories. In this paper, we examined patterns of post-fire spectral recovery using Landsat time series. Additionally, we utilized random forest models to analyze the impact of climate and burn severity on three fire events in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Fifteen years following the fires, none of the burned stands …

Applying Landscape Fragmentation Analysis To Icescape Environments: Potential Impacts For The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens), Anthony Himmelberger, K E. Frey, Florencia Sangermano
Geography
Sea-ice cover across the Arctic has declined rapidly over the past several decades owing to amplified climate warming. The Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) relies on sea-ice floes in the St. Lawrence Island (SLI) and Wainwright regions of the Bering and Chukchi seas surrounding Alaska as a platform for rest, feeding and reproduction. Lower concentrations of thick ice floes are generally associated with earlier seasonal fragmentation and shorter annual persistence of sea-ice cover, potentially affecting the life history of the Pacific walrus. In this study, 24 Landsat satellite images were classified into thick ice, thin ice or open water to …

The Right To Counsel In A Neoliberal Age, Zohra Ahmed

Legal scholarship tends to obscure how changes in criminal process relate to broader changes in society at large. This article offers a modest corrective to this tendency. By studying the Supreme Court’s right to counsel jurisprudence, as it has developed since the mid-70s, I show the pervasive impact of the concurrent rise of neoliberalism on relationships between defendants and their attorneys. Since 1975, the Court has emphasized two concerns in its rulings regarding the right to counsel: choice and autonomy. These, of course, are nominally good things for defendants to have. But by paying close attention to how the Court …

With all eyes on criminal justice reform, multidistrict litigation (MDL) has quietly reshaped civil justice, undermining fundamental tenets of due process, procedural justice, attorney ethics, and tort law along the way. In 2020, the MDL caseload tripled that of the federal criminal caseload, one out of every two cases filed in federal civil court was an MDL case, and 97% of those were products liability like opioids, talc, and Roundup.
Ordinarily, civil procedure puts tort plaintiffs in the driver’s seat, allowing them to choose who and where to sue, and what claims to bring. Procedural justice tells courts to ensure …
