Hatching Of Sod Webworm Eggs In Relation To Low And High Temperatures, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs Jan 1971

Hatching Of Sod Webworm Eggs In Relation To Low And High Temperatures, Ellis L. Matheny, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Eggs of 12 species of sod webworm were exposed for various periods to temperatures of 0, 10, and 45°C. Hatchability was compared with control eggs kept at 25°C. Short exposures to any temperature did not significantly affect percent hatch. Prolonged exposure resulted in a significant decrease in hatchability for several species at 0° and for all species at 45°C. There was a significant difference in hatchability between the 3 generations of Crambus teterrellus (Zincken) and of Pediasia trisecta (Walker) at extreme temperatures. Populations of Agriphila ruricolella (Zeller), collected at 2 elevations, differed significantly in hatching percentage and developmental rate.

Observations On Parasite-Host Relationships Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In North Dakota, Robert L. Rausch, S. H. Richards

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus), and small mammals were collected and examined during 1965-1969, to investigate parasite-host relationships of Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, in North Dakota. Comparative studies of this cestode were carried on concurrently through experimental infection of carnivores and rodents. In winter, red foxes in North Dakota exhibited high rates of infection of comparatively low intensity. Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord), were important intermediate hosts, but the larvae in deer mice produced fewer protoscolices. The strains of E. multilocularis from North Dakota and from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, differ biologically, as indicated by …

Morphology Of The Spores Of Myxosoma Cerebralis (Hofer, 1903) And M. Cartilaginis (Hoffman, Putz, And Dunbar, 1965)*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Jiří Lom

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The spore of Myxosoma cerebralis is redescribed and compared with that of a close relative, M. cartilaginis. M. cerebralis is smaller, with greater variability in size and shape. It possesses a mucous envelope whereas M. cartilaginis does not. The surface architecture of M. cerebralis, as seen with the scanning electron microscope, differs in possessing a conspicuous circumsutural groove, prominent polar filament pores, and a mucous envelope.

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation Jan 1971

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. The objectives of the study are: (1) to determine trace metal balance at different locations in Lake Mead, (2) to measure biological productivity and conduct plankton population counts at each sampling …

The Effect Of Las Vegas Wash Effluent Upon The Water Quality In Lake Mead, D. A. Hoffman, P. R. Tramutt, F. C. Heller, Bureau Of Reclamation Jan 1971

The Effect Of Las Vegas Wash Effluent Upon The Water Quality In Lake Mead, D. A. Hoffman, P. R. Tramutt, F. C. Heller, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

This study developed from observations made during an earlier study on Lake Mead which was reported in CHE-70, Water Quality Study of Lake Mead. Results from that study indicated that poor-quality water was flowing into the Las Vegas Bay reach of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. Also reports of deteriorating water quality, resulting in taste and odors in domestic water supplies taken from Boulder Basin as well as a reduction in the attractiveness of Las Vegas Bay for recreational uses caused by aquatic plants and algae blooms, indicated a need for a concentrated study concerning the effects of flows from Las …

Sediment Reworking Rates And The Feeding Ecology Of Axiothella Rubrocincta (Polychaeta: Maldanidae), Jerry David Kudenov Jan 1971

Sediment Reworking Rates And The Feeding Ecology Of Axiothella Rubrocincta (Polychaeta: Maldanidae), Jerry David Kudenov

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, the sediment reworking rates, irrigation rates, and activity patterns of Axiotheata rubrocincta have been investigated. The results are compared with studies of other deposit feeding polychaetes.

Because sediment ingestion is a feeding process, it has been necessary to examine some aspects of the feeding morphology and ecology of A. rubrocincta. Some of these findings differed from the results of Spies (MS.). The feeding biology and morphology of two additional maldanidae, Clymenella sp. and Praxillella affinis pacifica (Berkeley, 1929) have been studied. These finding are compared with earlier studies on maldanid genera and species by Pilgrim (1965b, …

Possible Carriers In Mouse Erythrocytes, Joseph Doyle Mcclure Jan 1971

Possible Carriers In Mouse Erythrocytes, Joseph Doyle Mcclure

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Early qualitative erythrocyte permeability studies (Gryns, 1896; Hedin, 1897) revealed the wide range of non-electrolyte permeability rates across a cell membrane composed of lipid molecules. Theoretically, water-soluble non-electrolytes such as glycerol, ethylene glycol and erythritol would penetrate less rapidly than lipid-soluble non-electrolytes. It was thought that the rate of penetration of water-soluble non-electrolytes was inversely proportional to their molecular size and the penetration of lipid-soluble non-electrolytes was directly proportional to their lipid-solubility.

Some Biological Aspects Of Lizard Eimerians, With A Description Of Eimeria Poinsettis N. Sp. From Sceloporus Poinsetti, David A, Colwell

All Master's Theses

A previously described eimerian, Eimeria sceloporis, from the northwestern fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis occidentalis, was observed for oocyst production, incidence and intensity of infection in both juvenile and adult lizards. In order to test the species specificity of Eimeria ahtanumensis, an attempted transmission was made to Sceloporus poinsetti, Sceloporus jarrovi, Sceloporus undulatus and Sceloporus occidentalis. During the winter of 1970-1971 fecal samples were collected from Sceloporus poinsetti to determine possible coccidial infections. The lizards were collected in September of 1970 in Hidulgo County, New Mexico and the ensuing investigation showed that nine of the thirteen adults were passing an intestinal …

The Cytogenetics Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Three Wild Type Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rosemary Ann Harris Jan 1971

The Cytogenetics Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Three Wild Type Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rosemary Ann Harris

Masters Theses

This investigation involves the cytogenetics of three strains of field-collected, wild-type Illinois Drosophila melanogaster. These three strains were collected from Charleston, Channahon, and Olney, Illinois, in 1967.

The purpose of this study was to compare cytogenetically these three strains and to determine if there exists differences among them. First, the chromosomes themselves were studied for the purpose of identifying the four chromosomes of D. melanogaster by their characteristic banding patterns. Then, the chromosomes of the three strains were examined for chromosomal aberrations, principally inversions. The cytogenetics of the chromosomes of the three strains were then compared and contrasted.

Lysis Of The Rhizobiaceae, Craig Richard Baumrucker Jan 1971

Lysis Of The Rhizobiaceae, Craig Richard Baumrucker

Masters Theses

The following members of the Rhizobiaceae were tested for their lytic response to various treatments: Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Chromobacterium violaceum, Rhizobium phaseoli, Rhizobium trifolii, Rhizobium lupini, and Rhizobium japonicum. Lysis was observed in spent growth media and as a function of saline concentration, pH, buffer composition, disodium (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetate (EDTA) concentration, and lysozyme.

Cells were harvested by centrifugation, washed, and resuspended in various treatment solutions. The lytic response was followed spectrophotometrically.

The different responses of the six cultures was applied to a summation of reclassification proposals evolved through modern taxonomic techniques such as DNA homology …

Radio-Biotelemetry Studies Of Circadian Body Temperature Rhythms And Activity Levels [Of The] Zebra Finch (Peophilia Guttata), Vaughan Arthur Langman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The object of this study was to determine the normal thermoregulatory patterns of zebra finches (Poephilia guttat) in as near a normal physiological and behavioral state as possible. Surface body temperature and level of activity were the two primary channels of information. Radiobioelemetry allowed the reduction of external disturbance during long periods of continuous recording.

Taxonomic Studies On The Genus Podocotyle (Trematoda: Opecoelidae), Paul Clinton Edmiston Jan 1971

Taxonomic Studies On The Genus Podocotyle (Trematoda: Opecoelidae), Paul Clinton Edmiston

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The original intent of this study was to reinvestigate and confirm the validity of thirteen species of Podocotyle reported from Dillon Beach, California. Eight species were described by Park (1937) and five described by Johnson (1949-unpublished). Among these species basic similarities were evident in such features as: cirrus sac, seminal vesicle, body shape, extent and distribution of vitellaria, which indicated the possibility of conspecificity. Because four of these species (Podocotly blennicottusi, P. california, P. pedunculata, and P. pacifica) were also reported from fishes of the Pacific Northwest coast by Ching (1960), Pratt and McCauley (1961), Arai (1969), and Hall and …

Larval Development And Feeding Ecology Of Hermissenda Crassicornis (Eschscholtz) And Aeolidia Papillosa (Linnaeus), Leslie G. Williams Jan 1971

Larval Development And Feeding Ecology Of Hermissenda Crassicornis (Eschscholtz) And Aeolidia Papillosa (Linnaeus), Leslie G. Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Thompson (1967) defines three developmental types for Opisthobranchia with representative nudibranchs in each category. The types are: 1.) planktotrophic larvae which are obligatory plankton feeders prior to progressive metamorphosis, 2.) lecithotrophic larvae which may feed on the plankton, but do not need to do so in order to metamorphose, 3.) direct development which results in hatching of a post veliger, benthic juvenile.

Tardy (1970) feels that Thompson's Type 3 development is artificial. Thus, he incorporates direct development into the lecithotrophic developmental type. Tardy then proposes a classification of metamorphic types based on larval shell type (Thompson, 1961) and on larval …

Temperature Induced Changes In The Territorial Dynamics Of Cyprinodon Macularius Baird And Girard, Don Victor Plantz Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Behavior is qualitatively and quantitatively modified by the environment. Thus, any consideration of behavior must take into consideration the environmental conditions present. The present study evaluates the interrelationship between one environmental condition (temperature) and a measurable behavioral phenomenon (territoriality).

A Variation Of The Standard Steepest Ascent Search Procedure For Response Surface Experiments, George Whitfield Cobb Jan 1971

A Variation Of The Standard Steepest Ascent Search Procedure For Response Surface Experiments, George Whitfield Cobb

Theses and Dissertations

The results of this chapter lead to a modification of the standard stopping rule which breathes new life into the method of steepest ascent, but which is unfortunately not sufficient to effect a total resuscitation. As expected, there is no uniformly optimum stopping rule, nor even a uniformly best test statistic; both the optimum statistic and the optimum test level depend on the model parameters y1 and y2. One can, however, adopt a compromise rule which works reasonably well for all parameter combinations by testing at the 25% level with the statistic zn = 1/2(yn -yn-2). In many cases the …

High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall Jan 1971

High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall

Faculty Publications

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again. Melting points for samples in …
