Comparative Study And Dyeing Performance Of As-Synthesized Azo Heterocyclic Monomeric, Polymeric, And Commercial Disperse Dyes, Shehu Sa'ad Abdullahi, Haruna Musa, Shehu Habibu, Abdullahi Haruna Birniwa, Rania Edrees Adam Mohammad
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study poly (4-nitrophenylazo-3-aminopyridine - formaldehyde) (PNAAP-F) and poly (4-nitroarylazo-3-chloro-6-hydroxypyridine - formaldehyde) (NAACHP-F) were synthesized via diazotization, coupling and polycondensation reactions. The structural properties of the as-synthesized dyes were acquired using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-visible absorption maxima and their color, yield, melting point, solubility, and viscosity were determined via standard methods. UV-visible and FTIR results show successful formation of the polymeric dyes due to shift of wavelength of maximum absorption (λmax) (440-490 nm, 480-540 nm) and new absorption peak at around (2780-2995 cm-1) for methylene bridge respectively. The dyes were found to be …

Polyvinyl Alcohol-Citrate-Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles As An Optical Sensor For Selective Colorimetric Determination Of Sildenafil, Asi̇ye Aslihan Avan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A facile and sensitive colorimetric detection method for sildenafil citrate (SLDC) has been developed by using polyvinyl alcohol-citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticles (PVA-Cit-AgNPs). The sensitivity and selectivity of colorimetric detection were investigated in detail. The PVA-Cit-AgNPs could be induced to aggregate immediately in the presence of SLDC, especially after the addition of 0.1 M HCl solution. The SLD could be detected by the colorimetric response of AgNPs that could be monitored by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer or even the naked eye. The linear range was found to be 0.6-5.0 μM with the calculated detection limit of 0.1 μM and the naked-eye detection limit …

Quaternarization And Polymerization Of 2-Chloroethyl Maleate Derivative Of Epoxidized Soybean Oil, Demet Gürbüz
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
As a potent antibacterial, antifungal or antiviral material, synthesis of quaternarized epoxidized soybean oil was demonstrated in this work. The first step of the synthesis is the reaction of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) with 2-chloroethyl maleic acid (Cl-MA-ESO). The last step is quaternarization of this condensate with triethylamine (Q-MA-ESO). All the synthesized monomers were characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR techniques. Homopolymer of the quaternarized derivative (Q-MA-ESO) was not obtained. However, styrene copolymers were obtained and characterized. Thermal properties of the copolymers were determined by TGA and DSC techniques. Additionally, swelling properties of the materials were also evaluated. The …
Removal Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) From Water Through Degradable Polycaprolactone Electrospun Membrane, Fuat Topuz
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common and persistent environmental pollutants produced during the incomplete combustion of fuels. They are known for their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Thus, their removal from water bodies is highly crucial and has become a critical issue globally. As a solution, here an electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) membrane with a mean fiber diameter of 2.74 ± 1.3 μm was produced by electrospinning. Water contact angle (WCA) analysis confirmed the hydrophobic nature of the PCL membrane with a WCA of 124°, which remained stable over time. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC) revealed the semicrystalline nature of the membrane …

Using The Delphi Method To Develop The Social-Ecological Resilience Indicators Of Organic Rice Production In Thailand, Chaiteera Panpakdee, Suchint Simaraks, Chanidapa Sookcharoen
Forest and Society
This paper illustrates the application of the Delphi method, which assists in the production of social-ecological resilience indicators, and which are suitable for building the resilience of organic rice production in the central portion of Northeastern Thailand. Forty-seven adept farmers were purposively selected as participants, and the Delphi method was utilized as a tool by which the participants could reveal their different opinions and ideas. They were surveyed in order to visualize an organic rice system called the ‘desirable system.’ Nevertheless, such a system must be built simultaneously with certain components, the attributes of which can enable the system to …

Transforming Growth Factor β (TGFβ) is a key mediator of immune evasion in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and the addition of TGFβ inhibitors in select immunotherapy regimens shows early promise. Though the TGFβ target SMAD4 is deleted in approximately 55% of PDAC tumors, the effects of SMAD4 loss on tumor immunity have yet to be fully explored. Using a combination of genomic databases and PDAC specimens, we found that tumors with loss of SMAD4 have a comparatively poor T-cell infiltrate. SMAD4 loss was also associated with a reduction in several chemokines with known roles in T-cell recruitment, which was recapitulated …

Journal Articles: Internal Medicine
Binge drinking is the most common form of excessive alcohol use. Repeated episodes of binge drinking cause multiple organ injuries, including liver damage. We previously demonstrated that chronic ethanol administration causes a decline in the intrahepatic ratio of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH). This decline causes impairments in essential methylation reactions that result in alcohol-induced fatty liver (steatosis) and other features of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Co-treatment with betaine during chronic ethanol feeding, normalizes hepatocellular SAM:SAH ratio and alleviates many features of liver damage including steatosis. Here, we sought to examine whether betaine treatment similarly protects against liver injury in …
Managing And Monitoring The Menopausal Body, Naomi R. Cahn, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman
Managing And Monitoring The Menopausal Body, Naomi R. Cahn, Bridget J. Crawford, Emily Gold Waldman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This Essay explores how menopausal bodies are managed and monitored through both menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and the burgeoning market for technology-driven menopause products and services. While each of these allegedly improves the menopause experience, a closer investigation reveals a more complex interaction of profit motives and traditional notions of gender identity. The Essay identifies problems with—and suggests some solutions for reforming—current practices of monitoring and managing the menopausal body.
Careful consideration of menopause brings this Essay into ongoing conversations about theorizing beyond the gender binary and stereotypical notions of femininity. Purveyors of both MHT and menopause-related digital products and …

Food, Freedom, Fairness, And The Family Farm, Robin M. Rotman, Sophie Mendelson
Faculty Publications
The concept of the “family farm” holds powerful sway within the American narrative, embodying both nostalgia for an imagined past and anxiety for a future perceived to be under threat. Since the founding of the United States, this cultural ideal has been invoked in support of a rosy vision of agrarian democracy while obscuring the ways in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s codified definition of “family farm” has unfairly aggregated advantages for the benefit of a particular kind of family (nuclear) and farmer (white, male, straight). At the same time, consumers are misled by an under-interrogated conflation of family …

Non-Linear Relationships Between Density And Demographic Traits In Three Aedes Species, Logan A. Sauers, Steven A. Juliano, Kelsey E. Hawes
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Understanding the relationship of population dynamics to density is central to many ecological investigations. Despite the importance of density-dependence in determining population growth, the empirical relationship between density and per capita growth remains understudied in most systems and is often assumed to be linear. In experimental studies of interspecifc competition, investigators often evaluate the predicted outcomes by assuming such linear relationships, ftting linear functions, and estimating parameters of competition models. In this paper, we experimentally describe the shape of the relationship between estimated population rate of change and initial density using laboratory-reared populations of three mosquito species. We estimated per …

How Does Flow Alteration Propagate Across A Large, Highly Regulated Basin? Dam Attributes, Network Context, And Implications For Biodiversity, Albert Ruhi, Jeongwoo Hwang, Naresh Devineni, Sudarshana Mukhopadhyay, Hemant Kumar, Lise Comte, Scott Worland, A. Sankarasubramanian
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Large dams are a leading cause of river ecosystem degradation. Although dams have cumulative effects as water flows downstream in a river network, most flow alteration research has focused on local impacts of single dams. Here we examined the highly regulated Colorado River Basin (CRB) to understand how flow alteration propagates in river networks, as influenced by the location and characteristics of dams as well as the structure of the river network—including the presence of tributaries. We used a spatial Markov network model informed by 117 upstream-downstream pairs of monthly flow series (2003–2017) to estimate flow alteration from 84 intermediate-to-large …

Avian Eggshell Coloration Predicts Shell-Matrix Protoporphyrin Content, Charles F. Thompson, Kara E. Hodges, Nathan T. Mortimer, Alysia D. Vrailas-Mortimer, Scott K. Sakaluk, Mark E. Hauber
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Avian eggshell pigmentation may provide information about a female’s physiological condition, in particular her state of oxidative balance. Previously we found that female House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon Vieillot, 1809) with lighter, less-maculated, and redder ground-colored shells were older and produced heavier offspring than females laying more-maculated and browner eggs. The strong pro-oxidant protoporphyrin is responsible for this species’ eggshell pigmentation, so differences in pigmentary coloration may be related to eggshell protoporphyrin content and reflect female oxidative balance and condition during egg formation. Therefore, we tested the assumption that egg-surface coloration is related to the amount of protoporphyrin in the …

Biomarkers Of Inflammation And Oxidative Stress In The Prediction And Management Of Acute Coronary Syndrome, Udaya Ralapanawa, Sivakanesan R
Health Sciences
The assessment of patients presenting with chest pain or symptoms indicative of cardiac ischemia remains a diagnostic challenge. Many types of research have focused on the search for ideal biological markers for the rapid detection of cardiac cell injuries. Markers of inflammation and oxidative stress are the way forward. At present, the biomarker most widely used for diagnosing acute coronary syndrome is cardiac troponin though it has some limitations. Apart from cardiac troponin, several other biomarkers, especially inflammation and oxidative stress markers in acute coronary syndrome, have been investigated. However, most of them still require validation in further studies. As …

All Scientists Should Write Poetry: Creative Writing As Essential Academic Practice, Mariya Deykute
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Creative writing in undergraduate academics has often been regarded as an elective practice that has benefits primarily for students who plan to pursue creative or literary majors. However, poetic inquiry specifically offers crucial benefits to STEM students, owing both to the transformative nature of poetic process and to the way poetic inquiry can stimulate innovative, ethical, multilingual and interdisciplinary growth. The author frames the issue through individual experience of teaching poetry to STEM undergraduates in the context of a rich multilingual environment, in which many students are fluent or proficient in several languages. The author argues that due to the …

Hauntology And Epistemology In Guillermo Del Toro’S Pan’S Labyrinth And Juan Antonio Bayona’S The Orphanage, Timothy P. Reed
The Coastal Review
This article analyzes the narrative function of the fantastic in two commercial Spanish language movies, Guillermo Del Toro’s 2006 Pan’s Labyrinth and Juan Antonio Bayona’s 2007 The Orphanage, to compare how they encompass and reflect aspects of hauntological theory. The movies show how Ofelia and Laura embrace the fantastic to acquire knowledge and agency by deliberately communicating with specters. Through acknowledging the epistemological implications of the fantastic, deliberate disobedience and self-sacrifice, Ofelia and Laura are able to liberate themselves from a repressive present and envisage a more optimistic future for others too. Hauntological discourse in both films ultimately functions …
