Industrial Pollution In Coles County, Illinois, Michael William Conlin Jan 1971

Industrial Pollution In Coles County, Illinois, Michael William Conlin

Masters Theses

The Anaconda American Brass Company at Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois was found to discharge waste containing excessive amounts of copper, hexavalent chromium, sulfates, acids, and alkalies. These wastes were found to enter an agricultural field tile system and to emit at the Shellhammer tile where they entered a small unnamed creek, a large pond along Interstate 57, and Riley Creek.

Tests of the Shellhammer tile and Anaconda American Brass Company effluent were conducted from March, 1970 thru May, 1971. Maximum concentrations determined were as follows: (1) copper -- 15.5 ppm; (2) hexavalent chromium -- 1.5 ppm; (3) pH -- range …

The Influence Of Various Stress Conditions On Cholinesterase Levels Of Cattle Treated With An Organophosphorus Insecticide, Mitchell J. Wrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Six-to 8-months-old Hereford heifers categorized as grubby or grub-free calves were used for this research. Forty calves were purchased in 1968 and also in 1969. The grubby calves were obtained from Highmore, South Dakota, an area where calves have a history of heavy grub infestations of both Hypoderma bovis (L.) and Hypoderma lineatum (de Villers). The grub-free calves were purchased in Fargo, North Dakota. Calves raised in this area seldom are infested with cattle grubs. Specified groups of calves were subjected to 30 minutes of continuous exercise or the withholding of feed and water for 24 hours prior to treatment …

During 1970, 21 Angus and Hereford crossbred steers were individually fed and marketed at one of four constant weight classes from approximately 386 to 522 kg at intervals of approximately 45.0 kg. The amounts of edible portion, trimmed fat, removed bone and the summation of the kidney, pelvic, and cod fat were determined on the steers of both years. In 1970 two experiments examined the usefulness of an analog computer for calculation …

Notes On Insect Occurrences On The Mississippi Gulf Coast And Offshore Islands, Bryant Mather Jan 1971

Notes On Insect Occurrences On The Mississippi Gulf Coast And Offshore Islands, Bryant Mather

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Dr. Gordon Gunter (1970) has written that, through the work of Dr. E. A. Richmond, “. . . The species of living organisms of Horn Island are better recorded than those of any large island on the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast.” It is to be hoped that Dr. Richmond’s work will inspire others to contribute much more to the knowledge of the fauna and flora of the Gulf Coast and its offshore islands. I give here a few notes to place some of Dr. Richmond’s work in context, to recognize work by others, and to indicate the paucity of …

Discovery Of The Carolina Marsh Clam, Polymesoda Caroliniana (Bosc), A Supposed Florida Disjunct Species, In Everglades National Park, Florida, D.C. Tabb, D.R. Moore

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The presence of disjunct species of animals on either side of the Florida peninsula has been reported by a number of authors. The littorinid mollusk, Littorina irrorata Say, which has a range from Massachusetts to the Rio Grande of Texas, except for south Florida, is one such species (Bequaert 1943). The marsh crab, Sesarma cinereum (Bosc), is another example of an animal with a distribution from Virginia to the western Gulf of Campeche except for a break in southern Florida (Rathbun, 1918). Williams (1965) lists 23 species of crustaceans having interrupted distribution at the Florida peninsula. This report on discovery …

Observations On The Biology Of Mudshrimps Of The Genus Callianassa (Anomura: Thalassinidea) In Mississippi Sound, Philip J. Phillips Jan 1971

Observations On The Biology Of Mudshrimps Of The Genus Callianassa (Anomura: Thalassinidea) In Mississippi Sound, Philip J. Phillips

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The apparent habitat isolation of the mudshrimps Callianassa islagrande Schmitt and Callianassa jamaicense louisianensis Schmitt (Anomura : Thalassinidea) in Mississippi Sound is a function of species-related differences in ability to burrow and survive in the significantly different substrates of each habitat. C. islagrande is found only in sand bottomed beaches of the offshore barrier islands, whereas C. j. louisianensis is found only in the muddy backwaters of the mainland and Deer Island. Both forms produce deep and extensive permanent or semipermanent burrows in their respective habitat and are probably of some significance in sediment turnover. Laboratory studies show that C. …

The objectives of the present investigation are: (a) to delineate spawning seasons and the areas of as many species as possible based on larval abundance; (b) to study the spatial and seasonal distribution of penaeid larvae in relation to depth, temperature, salinity and seasons, which will indicate the movements of the spawners; (e) to inquire whether any correlation exists between occurrence of larvae and of adults in any area; (d) to examine the relationship between Penaeus postlarval abundance in the Mississippi Sound and larval and postlarval occurrence in the open sea; and (e) to study the vertical seasonal distribution of …

Internode Growth In The Aquatic Macrophyte, Hippuris Vulgaris, Mary Ellen Bland Jan 1971

Internode Growth In The Aquatic Macrophyte, Hippuris Vulgaris, Mary Ellen Bland

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT -An analysis of internode lengths in the Hippuris stem is represented by a four phase growth curve, The two parameters which infl~ence this pattern of internode lengths are the number of cells per internode and the length of the individual cells within the internode. In the ontogeny of the Hippuris stem cell length and cell number influence internode length in the distal portion of the stem while in the basal portion of the stem cell number is the major factor affecting internode length. The pattern of stem growth in Hippuris differs from that of Elodea in that the cell …

Patterns Of Lakeshore Usage Around Lake Bemidji, Charles S. Holt, Roger A. Schulz, Curtis M. Hadland

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - The eutrophication of lakes has been the subject of much discussion in scientific journals and the popular press .. Usually the e.utrophication process is accelerated by human activities. This study evaluates the extent of lakeshore development and recreational use of Lake Bemidji in north central Minnesota and examines the willingness of lakeshore residents to be assessed for corrective measures to halt deterioration of this valuable recreational lake. The shoreline of Lake Bemidji is highly developed, and the high density human habitation represents a potential source of nutrients from percolation through the sand and gravel soils which surround the …

Recent Changes In The Louisiana Marsh Near Vermilion Bay, Lionel N. Eleuterius Jan 1971

Recent Changes In The Louisiana Marsh Near Vermilion Bay, Lionel N. Eleuterius

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A special interest in marsh ecology led to the present study. Permanent sampling stations, whereby long range changes can be observed, have been neglected by researchers and there is only one known in the Gulf Coastal marshes. The uniqueness of the permanent transect offered an opportunity to study the floristic changes, if any, which occurred over a period of 18 years. Notes on the topography and other influencing factors were taken, as well as general observations on the surrounding marsh areas.

The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson Jan 1971

The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Isolation of a phytotoxin from the ring rot pathogen of potatoes, Corynebacterium sepedonicum, had previously been reported by Strobel (21). The first phase in our study was to investigate more extensively the general nature of this compound. The phytotoxin could possibly be a specific compound associated only with the ring rot pathogen. However, the possibility that the substance could be obtained from sources other than the bacterium had not been completely eliminated. In an attempt to answer this question, three extracts were purified and compared. First, compounds were isolated from a broth culture of bacteria in the manner described …

Descriptions Of Shrimp Larvae (Family Penaeidae) Off The Mississippi Coast, Chebium B. Subrahmanyam Jan 1971

Descriptions Of Shrimp Larvae (Family Penaeidae) Off The Mississippi Coast, Chebium B. Subrahmanyam

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Müller (1864) showed that the penaeid egg hatches into a nauplius. Some years later studies of the metamorphosis of penaeid shrimps in the Gulf of Mexico were made (Pearson 1939, Heegaard 1953, Dobkin 1961, Cook and Murphy 1965, and Renfro and Cook 1963). The present paper treats the larvae taken in Mississippi and brings together the descriptions of the larvae scattered in the literature. The salient features of various stages of different species of the six genera studied are pointed out with the aid of drawings to facilitate easier identification. Besides the references cited above, the works of Heldt (1938), …

A Bibliography Of Anomalies Of Fishes, Supplement 2, C.E. Dawson Jan 1971

A Bibliography Of Anomalies Of Fishes, Supplement 2, C.E. Dawson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

This listing adds 213 titles to the original bibliography (Gulf Res. Repts. 1 (6), 1964) and the 1966 supplement (Gulf Res. Repts. 2(2) :169-176). Although a number of previously overlooked references are included, there are 137 citations of works published during the 1965-70 period. The frequency of recent publications offers some indication of the current worldwide interest in problems of fish teratology.

Trap Manifested Behavior Trap Reflected Density Trap Reflected Distribution And Foods Consumed By Raccoons (Procyon Lotor L.) In Two Natural Areas Of Virginia, Elton L. Winslow

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A study was undertaken comparing populations of raccoons (Procyon lotor L.) in two natural areas of Virginia, one in the Piedmont physiographic province at Montpelier and the other in the coastal plain at Newport News. Comparisons were made with respect to differences in: (1) capture and recapture success, (2) relative trap reflected density, (3) trap reflected distribution with respect to aquatic habitat, and (4) in food consumption. Comparison of capture data indicated that capture success per 100 trap nights was much higher at Newport News (1.58) than at Montpelier (.76). However a similar comparison of recapture success per …

Notes On The Algae Of Arkansas. 1. Chrysococcus, Kephyrion, Kephyriopsis, Pseudokephyrion And Stenokalyx, Richard L. Meyer

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The genera Chrysococcus, Kephyrion, Pseudokephyrion and Stonokalyx have received some consideration by investigators in Europe and in the boreal forest and tundra-range regions of the United States. Many of the species are considered to be cold-water stenotherms, thus occurring more frequently in northern habitats. In the present paper 4 species of Chrysococcus, 4 species of Kephyroin, 2 species of Pseudokephyrion and 2 species of Stenokalyx from Arkansas are discussed.

Effects Of Urethan On Fish Epithelial And Fibroblast Cells In Vitro, Leland F. Morgans Jan 1971

Effects Of Urethan On Fish Epithelial And Fibroblast Cells In Vitro, Leland F. Morgans

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The effects of urethan on RTG-2 and FHM cells were studied in vitro, by using the mitotic index, it was determined that 0.3 percent urethan caused an increase in the rate of cell division while higher concentrations (0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 percent) caused either a decrease in the rate or a cessation of cell division. Concentrations of urethan higher than 1.5 percent killed the cells. The mitotic index data also indicated that epithelial cells continued to divide at a higher concentration of urethan than did the fibroblast cells. The morphological effects of urethan on the two cell lines were …

Pre-Impoundment Limnological Study Of The Strawberry River In Northeastern Arkansas, Henry W. Robison, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A study of pre-impoundment limnological characteristics of the Strawberry River was made from August, 1967 to June, 1968. Two collecting stations were established, one upstream which would not be inundated and a lower station which would be inundated when impoundment was complete. The Strawberry River was characterized by high alkalinity and pH, low carbon dioxide and turbidity, and adequate oxygen values. Plankton was characterized by limited numbers of Staurastrum, Gomphonema, and Rotatoria. Pool-riffle communities were ill-defined. Chironomidae, Oligochaeta and Ephemeroptera were dominant pool macroinvertebrates among 13 taxa collected. Of the 20 taxa collected in riffles Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae and Chironomidae …

Ichthyofaunal Diversification And Distribution In The Big Creek Watershed, Craighead And Greene Counties, Arkansas, James T. Jenkins, George L. Harp Jan 1971

Ichthyofaunal Diversification And Distribution In The Big Creek Watershed, Craighead And Greene Counties, Arkansas, James T. Jenkins, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Big Creek is a relatively small deltaic stream, in northeastern Arkansas, in an area of intense cultivation. Recently it has been dredged in the interest of flood control. Lost Creek and Mud Creek are the major tributaries of Big Creek and collectively drain the Big Creek watershed. The streams were found to have relatively low alkalinity, moderate carbon dioxide, adequate oxygen values, and relatively high turbidity. Channeling of Big Creek and Lost Creek has effectively destroyed distinct pool-riffle biocies and reduced the number of acceptable spawning areas. Lost Creek, also, receives effluent from residential dwellings, a secondary treatment sewage plant, …

Two-, Three-, And Four-Particle Spatial Correlations Among Tertiary Cosmic Ray Muons, David D. Busath, R O. Stevenson Jan 1971

Two-, Three-, And Four-Particle Spatial Correlations Among Tertiary Cosmic Ray Muons, David D. Busath, R O. Stevenson

Faculty Publications

Showers of muons which result from interactions of primary cosmic rays high in the atmosphere appear deep underground as bundles of nearly parallel muons. For threshold energies of 1 TeV and arrival zenith angles of 45 degrees, those events having a small mean number of muons are described by a power law distribution in shower size having an exponent of ≅ -3.7 and a radial density distribution that decreases with distance R from the shower axis a little less rapidly than exp(-R/5.4 m). Comparison of new data on four muon spatial correlations in terms of the same phenomenology with data …

The Breeding Biology Of The Western Tanager (Piranga Ludoviciana), Gary G. Benson Jan 1971

The Breeding Biology Of The Western Tanager (Piranga Ludoviciana), Gary G. Benson

All Master's Theses

In 1969 a two-year study was undertaken in an effort to enlarge our knowledge of the life history of the western tanager (Piranga ludoviciana). Bent (1958) summarizes the literature on the western tanager, and a review of his work clearly shows an almost total absence of detailed information on the species' life history. To obtain this information, observations were conducted from 1 May through 29 July 1969. A few observations were made during the 1968 breeding season.

PROGRESS in the field of chemical weed control has been spectacular in recent years. Despite the cut-back in expenditure on herbicides, the idea of replacing cultivation with chemical sprays is attracting great interest.

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson Jan 1971

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Salmonella potsdam group B bacteriophage P3, which grows in the rough variant strain of S. potsdam (SP2-R) and E. coli KCS11, KW117, and C+/L with similar efficiencies, was restricted by SP2-R after a passage though E. coli. The entrance of restricted E. coli-grown phage DNA into nonpermissive SP2-R cells was confirmed by the finding that after adsorption of restricted 32P-labeled P3-C1·C+/L to SP2-R and removal of the adsorbed phage heads from cells, 80.3% of the labeled DNA activity sedimented with the cells. Thus restricted P3 DNA …
