A Mathmatical Model Of Primary Productivity And Limnological Patterns In Lake Mead, Lorne G. Everett Sep 1972

A Mathmatical Model Of Primary Productivity And Limnological Patterns In Lake Mead, Lorne G. Everett

Publications (WR)

The temporal and spatial changes in chemical and biological properties of Lake Mead have been investigated, thereby indicating the sources of water pollution and the time of highest pollution potential. Planktonic organisms have been shown to indicate the presence of water problems. Macro- and micro-nutrient analyses have shown that primary productivity is not inhibited by limiting concentrations. A mathematical model has been developed, tested with one set of independent data, and shown worthy of management utility. Although the model works very well for the Lake Mead area, the physical reality of the Multiple Linear Regression equation should be tested on …

The Paleontology Of Billfish - The State Of The Art, Harry L. Fierstine Aug 1972

The Paleontology Of Billfish - The State Of The Art, Harry L. Fierstine

Biological Sciences

The major osteological features are described for living billfishes. All billfish remains are reviewed critically and some questionable forms are placed in Xiphioidei Incertae Sedis (uncertain status). The remaining xiphioids are placed into three families: Istiophoridae, Xiphiidae, and Xiphiorhynchidae. A new undescribed xiphiid from Mississippi shows that the billfish lineages must have diverged prior to the Eocene. Areas of research are suggested that will help place the paleontological studies on a more secure foundation.

Effects Of Some Commercial Enzymes In The Deinking Of Newsprint, James O. Prickett Aug 1972

Effects Of Some Commercial Enzymes In The Deinking Of Newsprint, James O. Prickett

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The trend of industry, in general, today is one of recycling. This is brought about as a means of conserving our dwindling natural resources and to help abate the pollution problem.

The design of this paper is to see if enzymes can be used successfully and economically in the deinking process of newsprint. Varying concentrations of enzymes, both an amylase and a protease, and a biodegradable detergent were used in a handsheet study. Temperature and pH were controlled so as to not denature the enzymes. It was found that the brightness increase was only minimal with a protease and brightness …

Ddt Inhibition Of (Na+, K+)-Activated Atpase In Gill Tissue Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Nancy Mccutcheon Slate Aug 1972

Ddt Inhibition Of (Na+, K+)-Activated Atpase In Gill Tissue Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Nancy Mccutcheon Slate

Master's Theses

The DDT inhibition of (Na+, K+) - activated ATPase in gill preparations of the euryhaline teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus, was measured. The (Na+, K+) -activated ATPase was found to be sensitive to DDT, with 74.6% of the enzyme's specific activity inhibited by 20 ppm DDT. The (Mg++)-activated ATPase was also sensitive to inhibition bv DDT but not to the extent of the (Na+, K+) - activat ed ATPase . Due to previous work which showed that DDT antagonized valinomycin-induced K+ conductance in a synthetic membrane, the effect of K+ on DDT inhibition was examined kinetically. The Km for K+ in gill …

Isolation And Identification Of The Toxic Principle In The Tissues Of The Ectoproct Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), Donald Coleman Smith Aug 1972

Isolation And Identification Of The Toxic Principle In The Tissues Of The Ectoproct Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), Donald Coleman Smith

Master's Theses

The tissue of Lophopodella carteri (Hyatt) was isolated, and the agent toxic to fish present in the tissues was extracted. A chloroform-soluble component and a water-soluble component were separated from the filtrate of the homogenized tissues. Each component was tested for toxicity. The chloroform-soluble component was found to be extremely toxic. The water-soluble component was originally non-toxic, but after several months of freezing and defrosting the tissue, this component became toxic.

The chloroform-soluble component was purified by thin-layer chromatography. Several lipid classes were obtained, of which one was toxic. This toxic class was further purified by thin-layer chromatography resulting in …

The Effects Of Estradiol And Thyroxine On The Plasma And Liver Proteins Of The Thyroidectomized Water Snake, Albert D. Morrongiello Aug 1972

The Effects Of Estradiol And Thyroxine On The Plasma And Liver Proteins Of The Thyroidectomized Water Snake, Albert D. Morrongiello

Master's Theses

The effects of thyroidectomy, estradiol treatment, and thyroxine treatment on plasma and liver protein concentrations in the water snake, Natrix fasciata fasciata (Linnaeus, 1766), were investigated. There was a significant lowering of liver protein concentrations following thyroidectomy. This deficit could be replaced with thyroxine alone, but could not be replaced by treatment of thyroidectomized snakes with estradiol alone or with a combination of estradiol and thyroxine.

The plasma resolved into nine plasma proteins when electrophoresed in polyacrylamide gels. Although thyroidectomized snakes treated with estradiol only or a combination of estradiol and thyroxine showed enhancement in two protein fractions, the significance …

Bionomics And The Influence Of Diet Upon The Maturation Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Lynden Phillip Baum Aug 1972

Bionomics And The Influence Of Diet Upon The Maturation Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Lynden Phillip Baum

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of the bionomics of plague vectors, es-pecially factors which influence life history, host pre-ference, and fluctuations of flea populations, are basic to an understanding of plague ecology. Orchopeas leucopus (Baker), an ectoparasite of cricetid rodents such as Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and Peromyscus truei (Baird), is a vector of plague in the western United States (Holdenried and Morlan, 1955). In a study of nine biotic corrnnunities in the Utah portion of the Great Basin, P. maniculatus was the most abundant rodent in seven of the biotic corrnnunities (Olsen, 1966). Because of the ubiquitous nature of P. maniculatus an interchange of …

Population Dynamics Of Fleas (Siphonaptera) On The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Armatus Kennicott, Dennis I. Anderson Aug 1972

Population Dynamics Of Fleas (Siphonaptera) On The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Armatus Kennicott, Dennis I. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The Uninta ground squirrel, Spermophilus armatus Kennicott, is the most abundant diurnal rodent in the Wasatch Mountains at the 7,000-9,000 foot level particularly in the campgrounds and picnic areas. Contact between man and the Uninta ground squirrel may be hazardous inasmuch as the causative agent of plague has been isolated from S. armatus and its flea parasites (Public Health Reports, 1937, 1938a, 1938b; Meyer, 1938; Byington, 1940; Allred, 1951; and Beck, 1955). Since these fleas are vectors of sylvatic plague and potential vectors of human plague, detailed knowledge about their population dynamics is desirable.

Embryology And Larval Development Of Acteon Punctocoelata (Carpenter) (Gastropoda, Opisthobranchiata), Scott E. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Acteon (Rictaxis) punctocoelata (Carpenter) is a primitive opisthobranch mollusc found sporadically in central California bays. The primitive nature of this genus is indicated both geologically and morphologically (Fretter and Graham, 1954 and Morton, 1958). This micro-phagous browser burrows just below the surface of the sandy mudflats, as do its close relatives Harninea, Scaphander, and Philine (Fretter and Graham, 1954). Its strong, sculptured external shell is approximately 1/2 inch long and is encircled with narrow black· bands that follow the whorls around the white shell (Fig. 1).

Theses and Dissertations

This study of the distribution of the fresh-water sponge, Meyenia fluviatilis, at the Lincoln Beach area of Utah Lake involved the following: First, sampling of the area for the presence or absence of the species. Second, sampling at two separate areas at different depth intervals to determine if the number of sponge colonies and colony size were in any way related to depth. Finally, monthly sampling at one area to determine when gemmules of M. fluviatilis were present in the sponge colonies. Meyenia fluviatilis was found to be commonly distributed in 1-2 m of water on the lower surface of …

The Effects Of Channelization And Water Impoundment On The Macroinvertebrates In The Weber River, Summit County, Utah, Parley V. Winger Aug 1972

The Effects Of Channelization And Water Impoundment On The Macroinvertebrates In The Weber River, Summit County, Utah, Parley V. Winger

Theses and Dissertations

Macroinvertebrate populations in the Weber River, Summit County, Utah, were analyzed to determine what effects channelization resulting from Interstate-80 construction and water impoundment had on the standing crop, species diversity and species composition. Bottom samples were collected monthly from riffle areas in channeled and unchanneled sections and above Echo and Wanship Reservoirs. Macroinvertebrate populations in the channeled areas were similar in standing crop, species diversity and species composition to those in unchanged areas within six months following channelization. Species diversities were higher (d=4.1, 3.7) above the reservoirs than below (d=2.0). The reservoirs restricted the distribution of several species of macroinvertebrates. …

Lipids Of Fungal Spores, Identification And Metabolism, Jim L. Bushnell Aug 1972

Lipids Of Fungal Spores, Identification And Metabolism, Jim L. Bushnell

Theses and Dissertations

The lipids of the spores of the Basidiomycetes: Ustilago bullata, Lycoperdon perlatum and Calvatia gigantea were investigated. The spores of U. bullata were found to have hydrocarbons ranging from C_9 to C_24, methyl esters of fatty acids ranging from C_14 to C_24, and free fatty acids from C_14 to C_24. The spores of L. perlatum were found to have few hydrocarbons (C_22 being the predominent one); no methyl esters were detected and the fatty acids were from C_15 to C_18. Long chain aldehydes (C_30) were also detected in low concentration. At the ultrastructural level the Lycoperdon spores were found to …

Laboratory Rearing, Development And Cytogenetics Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Robert Francis Allen Aug 1972

Laboratory Rearing, Development And Cytogenetics Of Orchopeas Leucopus (Baker), Robert Francis Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Vector control is fundamental to the suppression and/or eradication of many endemic and epidemic diseases affecting man. The discovery and widespread application of insecticides in vector control programs focused early attention on studies revealing ecological and behavioral characteristics of arthropod vectors. As a consequence of this emphasis, few attempts were made to investigate arthropod cytogenetics. However, recent recognition of the deleterious effects of highly persistent insecticides on the environment and the development of insecticide resistance by vectors of human disease have established the importance of cytogenetics as a base on which programs for control of vector populations may be built …

Raptor Predation On Pocket Gopher Populations By The Use Of Hunting Perches, Robert C. Christensen Aug 1972

Raptor Predation On Pocket Gopher Populations By The Use Of Hunting Perches, Robert C. Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

The Northern Pocket Gopher (Thomomyst alpoides) is common on open range lands at high altitudes, and range management personnel have long been confronted with the problem of controlling gopher populations. Although some studies indicate that pocket gophers have little or no injurious effects on range in good condition, other studies show that large populations of these animals can seriously damage seeded ranges and ranges in poor condition (Colorado State University Exp, Stat., 1960). Julander, Low, and Morris (1969) indicate that in areas where gophers have reached populations of 27-39 gophers per acre, forage removal by gophers may be from 4.75 …

The Interaction Of Promazine With Selected Macromolecules And A Membrane Utilizing Absorption And Emission Spectroscopy, Jess D. Keeler Aug 1972

The Interaction Of Promazine With Selected Macromolecules And A Membrane Utilizing Absorption And Emission Spectroscopy, Jess D. Keeler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The association of promazine-HCl with bovine serum albumin, ammonium detergent micelles, and hemoglobin-free-rabbit-erythrocyte membranes were measured using the changes in the absorption and the emission of the interactants plus the fluorescent probe 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate. The binding of a promazine to serum protein and membrane did not alter the emission of the drug. However, the binding did produce a measurable quenching of the membrane and protein fluorescence. The quenching reaction was pH sensitive for both the protein and the membrane. Promazine binding to serum protein produced a hyperchromic change in the drugs absorption spectrum which paralleled the quenching reaction. The binding …

Characterization Of Field Populations Of Magarites Pupillus (Gould) (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia), Stephen Craig Schroeter Jul 1972

Characterization Of Field Populations Of Magarites Pupillus (Gould) (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia), Stephen Craig Schroeter

Theses and Dissertations

Field populations of Margarites pupillus (Gould), a numerically abundant prosobranch mollusc occuring on rocky shores in Puget Sound, Washington, have previously received little autecological attention. Seawater table studios and SCUBA observations led to the following conclusions: Populations of Margarites are primarily subtidal. Population density and growth are directly related to algal canopy density. Algal canopy may function in reducing predator efficiency, Margarites populations have a 1:1 sex-reatio and no size dimorphism. Sexually mature individuals live for at least two years, and possibly more than four years.

Helminths Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Great Basin And Upper Colorado Plateau Of Utah, Richard Carlyle Pearce Jul 1972

Helminths Of Sceloporus Lizards In The Great Basin And Upper Colorado Plateau Of Utah, Richard Carlyle Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

This study was prompted by the scarcity of information on helminths in Sceloporus lizards of Utah. It reports these worms and includes references to parasites of reptiles in the appendix. A microscopic examination of the coelom, mesenteries, liver, lungs, esophagus, stomach, and intestines of 55 lizards was made, but helminths were recovered only from stomachs and intestines. Examination of S. graciosus yielded Opchoristica scelopori, a cestode found in the duodenum, and Cyrtosomum penneri, C. readi, and C. heynemani, three nematodes of the cecum. The latter two are new nematodes for this host species. Examination of S. undulatus yielded three new …

Studies On The Metabolism Of Inhaled ¹²⁴Sb In Dogs And Syrian Hamsters, Sharon A. Walker Jul 1972

Studies On The Metabolism Of Inhaled ¹²⁴Sb In Dogs And Syrian Hamsters, Sharon A. Walker

Biology ETDs

Radioactive antimony is of biological interest because several of its isotopes are fission products and, therefore, represent a potential hazard in a nuclear accident. Also, workers may be exposed to antimony in its preparation for industrial use, and organic compounds of antimony are used to treat certain tropical diseases. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of some variables of chemical form on metabolism of inhaled 124Sb in dogs and hamsters. Three dogs each were exposed to three aerosols formed from a 124Sb-tartrate complex solution from which droplets were generated and passed through a heating column maintained …

The Use Of Low Frequency Sounds For Echoranging By Tadarida Macrotis, G. Michael Schum Jul 1972

The Use Of Low Frequency Sounds For Echoranging By Tadarida Macrotis, G. Michael Schum

Biology ETDs

A model of echoranging in bats is presented incorporating the parameters: pulse frequency, intensity, atmospheric attenuation, gain of a directional beaming pattern, gain of the pinnae, and hearing resolution. The range equation is simulated by carrying the above parameters within reasonable biological limits. The optimal set of parameters is predicted which will maximize the range of a bat’s echolocating system. Spectral analysis of the audible sounds emitted by free flying bats of the species Tadarida macrotis shows that these clicks are longer and louder than has previously been reported for similar low frequency modulated indicates that they are being used …

Urine Concentrating Ability, Kidney Structure And Drinking Water Dependence Of Insectivorous Bats., Kenneth N. Geluso Jul 1972

Urine Concentrating Ability, Kidney Structure And Drinking Water Dependence Of Insectivorous Bats., Kenneth N. Geluso

Biology ETDs

Urine concentrating ability and kidney structure were investigated in the following insectivorous bats of North America: Myotis lucifugus occultus, Myotis yumanensis, Myotis velifer incautus, Myotis auriculus, Myotis evotis, Myotis thysanodes, Myotis volans, Myotis californicus, Lasionycteris noctivagans, Pipistrellus hesperus, Eptesicus fuscus , Lasiurus cinereus, Euderma maculatum, Plecotus townsendii, Antrozous pallidus and Tadarida brasiliensis. Those species best able to conserve urinary water can survive solute load-water deprivation stresses at higher temperatures and lower water vapor pressures, have relatively longer loops of Henle and tend to live in more arid habitats than those species with relatively poor urine concentrating abilities .

Antrozous pallidus …
