Linseed : A Forgotten Crop, M L. Poole, R. J. Guyton, H. M. Fisher Jan 1974

Linseed : A Forgotten Crop, M L. Poole, R. J. Guyton, H. M. Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Linseed has become a forgotten crop in Western Australia. From a peak production of 6 200 tonnes from 12 500 hectares in 1969, and an apparently bright future, it dwindled to a bare 80 tonnes from 250 hectares in 1973.

This article looks at some of the reasons for this decline and, with linseed fetching all-time record prices on world markets, gives reasons why the crop should be grown.

Survival Mechanisms Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria, M. L. Schuster, D. P. Coyne Jan 1974

Survival Mechanisms Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria, M. L. Schuster, D. P. Coyne

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Natural habitats usually do not provide bacteria the continuity of agricultural crops. With continuous culture. perpetuation of pathogen is no problem. Although agricul tural practices provide some discontinuity between crops. it is less than that in nature. Uniformity of crop germ plasm also favors inoculum buildup and perhaps perpetuation of the pathogens.

Recollections, George W. Beadle Jan 1974

Recollections, George W. Beadle

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

In these exciting times when elementary and high schools teach modern biology, including many of the intricacies of biochemical genetics, the long slow process by which our present knowledge in this area was gained is not often fully appreciated. A third of a century elapsed before Mendel’s work was "rediscovered" and properly appreciated. Archibald E. Garrod’s (1) prophetic appreciation of the relation genetics and biochemistry, beginning soon after the so-called rediscovery of Mendel, lay fallow for more than forty years despite the fact that he published widely and relatively voluminously. As late as a quarter of a century after the …

Sporulation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Without Concurrent Derepression Of The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Kenneth W. Nickerson, John De Pinto, Lee A. Bulla Jr. Jan 1974

Sporulation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Without Concurrent Derepression Of The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Kenneth W. Nickerson, John De Pinto, Lee A. Bulla Jr.

Papers in Microbiology

Bacillus thuringiensis sporulates in a glucose-glutamate medium without concurrent derepression of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Glutamate appears to regulate tricarboxylic acid cycle activity as well as to influence spore heat resistance and production of dipicolinic acid.

Evaluation Of Soil Deposition And Removal Processes: An Interpretive Review, S. M. Kulkarni, R. B. Maxcy, R. G. Arnold

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

In each food processing plant, soil deposition and removal constitute unique processes influenced by the food, water supply, processing equipment, and cleaning regimen. Since there are so many complex as well as unique processes, the scientific literature represents many varied approaches to problems related to deposition and removal of soil. This paper considers the role of various constituents in soil residue. Likewise, the various factors contributing to the cleaning process are reviewed. Cleaning processes have changed considerably during recent years because of technological advances in food processing equipment as well as development of specialized cleaning equipment. Generally speaking, better sanitation …

Review Of Fish Pathology: A Guide To The Recognition And Treatment Of Diseases And Injuries Of Fishes, With Emphasis On Environmental And Pollution Problems And Parasites Of Freshwater Fishes: A Review Of Their Control & Treatment, Ross F. Nigrelli Jan 1974

Nigrelli

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Fish Pathology states in its subtitle that it is "A guide to the recognition and treatment of diseases and injuries of fIshes with emphasis on environmental and pollution problems." These topics were included in the author's earlier volume "Krankheiten und Schadigungen der Fische" (Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart, 1966) and are only slightly revised in . this English translation by Christa Ahrens. Fish Pathology deals briefly but inadequately with semiology and histopathologY but it is a good introduction to information on infectious, parasitic, and nonparasitic diseases of fishes, and to such subjects as the harmful effects of pollutants and abnormal environmental …

A Diurnal Zooplankton Migration Study In Lake Mead, Robert D. Staker Jan 1974

A Diurnal Zooplankton Migration Study In Lake Mead, Robert D. Staker

Publications (WR)

The diurnal vertical movement of zooplankton was first recorded in freshwater lakes by Weismann (1877) in Lake Constance (Bodensee), although Cuvier was credited with observing the migration of Daphniae in 1817 (Gushing, 1955). The migration is best observed in deep oligotrophic lakes and migrations of 50 m per day are described (Worthington, 1931). In addition, two species of chaetognaths are reported to migrate 400 m a day in marine waters off of Lisbon (Waterman and Berry, 1967) while Birge (1895) found little evidence of the phenomenon at all in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin. Most zooplankton that migrate rise at night and …

A Method Of Detecting Reaction To Environmental Influence By Recording Circadian Activity, Using The Flagfish Jordanella Floridae, Robert Matsuo Kano Jan 1974

A Method Of Detecting Reaction To Environmental Influence By Recording Circadian Activity, Using The Flagfish Jordanella Floridae, Robert Matsuo Kano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigates a means of detecting the reaction of aquatic vertebrates to environmental change by recording behavioral patterns within the diurnal activity. An apparatus measuring the activity of Jordanella floridae, Goode and Bean, using a photoelectric sensor system is described. Individual sensors monitored specific areas of the test aquarium that had special significance to the fish in the way of a particular behavioral category. An event recorder documented the breakage of light beams, giving continuous and accurately timed data of activity. Two distinct patterns of activity were recognized; a control, or typical, pattern, and a pattern resulting from the …

The Two-Way Mixed Model Analysis Of Variance, Kenneth Davis Buckley Jan 1974

The Two-Way Mixed Model Analysis Of Variance, Kenneth Davis Buckley

Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of variance for experiments where the fixed effects or random effects model is appropriate is generally agreed upon with regard to testing procedures and covariance structure. It is only in experiments involving both random and fixed factors, i.e. mixed effects models, that controversy occurs as to the proper analysis. The mixed effect model has been considered by many statisticians, and several techniques have been developed for explaining its structure and performing its analysis for balanced data sets. The relationship of these techniques have been discussed in several papers as well.

The simplest case of the difficulties presented by …

Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp Jan 1974

Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp

Masters Theses

The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.

A soil perfusion apparatus was used to determine the effects of 2,4-D in a typical soil ecosystem. Bacterial plate counts and nutrient …

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding Jan 1974

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding

Masters Theses

The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and 15 water quality parameters for five sites on Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois were examined for 26 weeks from March 14 through September 5, 1974. None of the water quality parameters studied showed sufficient deviations at any particular area on the lake to merit demarcated water quality zonation. The lake, with its continuous mixing and shallow depth, represented a fairly stable and continuous environment. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was determined as fairly diverse and some indication of seasonal variation was apparent. No significant compositional variation over different areas of the lake was found, also indicating …

Determination Of The Ld-50 Level For 2,4-D On Wild Type Culex Pipiens Mosquito Larvae In Illinois, William H. Ettinger Jan 1974

Determination Of The Ld-50 Level For 2,4-D On Wild Type Culex Pipiens Mosquito Larvae In Illinois, William H. Ettinger

Masters Theses

The LD-50 levels for 2,4-D and Ronnel were determined and compared on the larvae of Culex pipiens Linneaus mosquitoes. The World Health Organization technique for the 24 hour bioassay was employed. Ronnel served as an indicator of susceptibility to pesticides and it was found that 2,4-D is toxic to mosquito larvae with an LD-50 level of 1.95 p.p.m. It was also found that a concentration of 20 p.p.m. ethanol or greater causes lethality in the larvae.

Effect Of Thermal Stress On Larvae Of Patiria Miniata (Brandt) Including Studies On Induction Of Spawning, Development And Larval Tagging, Kenneth A. Simon Jan 1974

Effect Of Thermal Stress On Larvae Of Patiria Miniata (Brandt) Including Studies On Induction Of Spawning, Development And Larval Tagging, Kenneth A. Simon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been estimated by the Department of the Interior that by 1985 nearly one-quarter of all surface water in the United States will be used in removal of waste heat produced in electric generation. This will involve subjecting tremendous quantities of plankton to rapid fluctuations in temperature. The biological effect of such treatment on primary productivity and composition of zooplankton populations is not fully understood. To date little published information is available on the effect of rapid temperature fluctuations on plankton. Such temperatures are the result of heat exchange found in the cooling system of a steam-generating electric station. …

Parasites Of Fishes From The San Joaquin Delta, Gary Herndon Hensley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to extend previous parasitological investigations of the San Joaquin area fishes. This study did not deal with a specific group of fish or parasite, but rather all groups of fishes and parasites encountered. As the amount of work done in California has not been extensive, more research will contribute to our understanding of these fishes and their parasites.

Population Ecology Of The Littoral Fringe Gastropod Littorina Planaxis In Northern California, Russell James Schmitt Jan 1974

Population Ecology Of The Littoral Fringe Gastropod Littorina Planaxis In Northern California, Russell James Schmitt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Life history patterns of individual organisms are the result of natural selection and should be correlated with particular physical and biological characteristics of habitats in which they live. The littoral fringe is known to be the most severe physical habitat in the intertidal zone, and it is expected that organisms in it should have population characteristics associated with selective response to physical adversity rather than biological interaction. Ecological studies of populations of Littorina planaxis were made in the Dillon Beach and Bodega Head areas. The study localities differed principally in extent of wave exposure rather than geographical location.

A Quantitative Study Of The Water Quality And Plankton Of Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, And The Oaks Arm Of Clear Lake In Lake County, California, Stephen Patrick Hayes Jan 1974

A Quantitative Study Of The Water Quality And Plankton Of Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, And The Oaks Arm Of Clear Lake In Lake County, California, Stephen Patrick Hayes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to examine any possible associations between the measurements of water quality and lake conditions, and the quantity and composition of plankton present in Upper Blue Lake, Lower Blue Lake, and the Oaks Arm of Clear Lake during the sampling period. A secondary objective of this study was to provide a record of these measurements. These measurements, when taken collectively, are important indicators of the trophic state or nutrient condition of the waters of the three lakes from February through October 1972.

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox Jan 1974

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The flora of California has been studied as a whole, but with the exception of Yosemite Valley few specific areas in Tuolumne County have been investigated.

The area chosen for this investigation was approximately forty acres of the lava flow known as Table Mountain. This forty acres is located in the southeast portion of the Omega Mine near Rawhide Flat, Tuolumne County, California. The decision to use this area for study was based on its relative freedom from man's influence and its accessibility. The Omega Vine belongs to the author and its use was restricted during the period of investigation

Cetacean Notes. I. Sei And Rorqual Whales On The Mississippi Coast, A Correction. Ii. A Dwarf Sperm Whale In Mississippi Sound And Its Helminth Parasites, Gordon Gunter, Robin Overstreet

Gulf and Caribbean Research

I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenoptera physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. Dr. James Mead (in litt.) pointed out that the animal was a Sei Whale, Balaenoptera borealis. This remains a …
