Physiological And Behavior Studies Of Thelepus Crispus And Its Commensal Halosydna Brevisetosa, John B. Morgan
Physiological And Behavior Studies Of Thelepus Crispus And Its Commensal Halosydna Brevisetosa, John B. Morgan
Dissertations and Theses
Chemical, physical and physiological interactions between the marine commensal scaleworm Halosydna brevisetosa Kinberg and its terebellid host, Thelepus crispus Johnson were investigated. In an experiment designed to test for chemical attraction between the host and commensal, Halosydna were unable to identify the arm in a U-tube choice apparatus leading to the host. In 50 trials, 54% of the commensals crawled into the flow of water from their hosts. Other observations showed that Halosydna made contact with the host by random encounter. After contact, commensals followed tentacles down into the host’s tube and took up a characteristic position along the dorsum …
Trap Biases And Weather Parameters Influencing Mosquito Collecting And Activity, Virgil Roy Acuff
Trap Biases And Weather Parameters Influencing Mosquito Collecting And Activity, Virgil Roy Acuff
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
During the summer of 1972, eighteen species of mosquitoes were collected in Black Hawk Park, Cedar Falls, Iowa, using a New Jersey light trap, a Communicable Disease Center (CDC) miniature light trap baited with dry ice, an unbaited Malaise trap and a biting collection. Collections were made concurrently with the dual purpose of investigating trap biases for various species of mosquitoes captured and analyzing the effects of temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, barometric pressure, light intensity, and moonphase on the flight activity of female Aedes vexans (Meigen). The New Jersey light trap and the CDC miniature light trap baited with dry …

The Study Of The Transfer Of Learning Between Fine And Gross Motor Skill After Practice On Similar Mirror Reversal Tasks, Roberta A. Klugman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transfer of learning between fine and gross motor skill after practice on similar mirror reversal tasks. Transfer of learning would seem to imply that the learning of either type of skill, fine or gross, may facilitate the learning of the other. This study utilized a quasi-experimental, pre-post, three group design, Subjects were male and female volunteers from junior and senior high schools in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Sixty subjects were used in the analysis of the data with twenty-one in each experimental group and eighteen in the control group. Analysis of covariance …
Ichthyofaunal Survey Of The Current River Within Arkansas, Joe F. Green, John K. Beadles
Ichthyofaunal Survey Of The Current River Within Arkansas, Joe F. Green, John K. Beadles
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Current River is a clear predominantly spring-fed stream draining the southeastern face of the Ozark escarpment. Beginning at Montauk Springs, Dent County, Missouri, it meanders southward for 180 km to the Arkansas-Missouri state line. The study area containing 14 sampling stations was that part of Current River lying within the boundaries of Arkansas to its confluence with Black River. The collected fishes could be referred to as those common to a wide-ranging faunal group, the Ozark, and the lowland faunal group. Those of the Ozark group were restricted in their range by topography and the river's confluence with Little Black …
Origin Of Grassy Lake, Robert Terry Huffman
Origin Of Grassy Lake, Robert Terry Huffman
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Two theories have been proposed to explain the formation of Grassy Lake. One attributes the formation of the swamp to earthquake; the other states that it is one of the many so-called oxbow lakes in the area. A study of aerial photographs showing the absence of fault zones and related sandblows tends to rule out any possibility of an earthquake origin, and in size and shape the swamp in no way resembles an oxbow lake. The aerial photographs reveal instead that the formation of the swamp was due to a natural levee being built up by a river which meandered …
Seed Germination In Ginkgo Biloba L. I. Influences Of Cold Treatment, Gibberellic Acid And Red Light, Michael I. Johnson, James L. Wickliff
Seed Germination In Ginkgo Biloba L. I. Influences Of Cold Treatment, Gibberellic Acid And Red Light, Michael I. Johnson, James L. Wickliff
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The influences of cold treatment, gibberellic acid and red light treatment on rate of germination of seeds of Ginkgo biloba L. were followed for a 12-wk period. Dispersal units were collected, and the outer fleshy layer was removed soon after harvest. Of water-imbibed, non-cold-treated seeds, 50% of those which germinated did so within 11 wk after planting. A single application of red light accelerated the 50% germination time by 3 wk. Imbibition in GA3 solution did not appear to accelerate germination. With 4-wk cold treatment the 50% germination time was accelerated 6 wk in water-imbibed seeds. Both red light and …
Zinc Nutrition Of Rice Plants As Influenced By Seed Germinated In Zinc Solutions, Narsimaha R. Kasireddy, Lyell F. Thompson
Zinc Nutrition Of Rice Plants As Influenced By Seed Germinated In Zinc Solutions, Narsimaha R. Kasireddy, Lyell F. Thompson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In recent years a physiological disorder of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings growing in soils high in exchangeable calcium has been diagnosed as zinc deficiency. Calculations show that less than 30 g of zinc is needed to satisfy the nutrition of a hectare of 6-8-wk-old rice plants. Rice seed was soaked and germinated in dilute solutions of zinc ethylenediamine tetraacetate, zinc sulfate and zinc lignosulfonate prior to planting in greenhouse pots containing a zinc-deficient soil. The rice plants grown from the zinc-treated seed produced more growth and sorbed more zinc than rice plants grown from untreated seed.
Preimpoundment Ichthyofaunal Survey Of The Piney Creek Watershed, Izard County, Arkansas, William J. Matthews, George L. Harp
Preimpoundment Ichthyofaunal Survey Of The Piney Creek Watershed, Izard County, Arkansas, William J. Matthews, George L. Harp
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Piney Creek is a clear medium-size tributary of White River in a region of the Ozarks that is undergoing rapid environmental change. Piney Creek is characterized by a very diverse ichthyofauna, although increased sedimentation due to poor agricultural practices and gravel mining threatens to destroy much natural habitat and eventually may cause extirpation of some species. The wide diversity of 44 species is related to variety of habitat and the proximity of a large reservoir, and not to differences in the physicochemical environments. Fish density ranged from 15,100 to 21 fish/ha, greatest concentrations being in headwater pools. For the three …

Microscopic Anatomy Of The Digestive Tract Of The White Amur, Ctenopharyngodon Idella Val., Leland F. Morgans, Gary A. Heidt
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The digestive tract of the amur is like that of other vertebrates in that it is composed of four layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa. The mucosa is composed of pseudostratified epithelial tissue and an extremely thin lamina propria and muscularis mucosa. Goblet cells are found throughout this layer of the gut, being most numerous In the posterior part. The submucosa is composed of dense irregular connective tissue. The muscularis externa consists of an inner and an outer layer of smooth muscle fibers. However, in the esophageal region this layer also contains some striated muscle. The serosa is composed …
Fishes Of The Strawberry River System Of Northcentral Arkansas, Henry W. Robison, John K. Beadles
Fishes Of The Strawberry River System Of Northcentral Arkansas, Henry W. Robison, John K. Beadles
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A survey of the fishes of the Strawberry River in northcentral Arkansas was made between August 1967 and November 1973. Field collections, literature records and museum specimens showed the ichthyofauna of the Strawberry River to be made up of 95 species distributed among 17 families. Two erroneous records are deleted. One subspecies, Etheostoma spectabile fragi,, is endemic to the river. Records of Notropis fumeus, Etheostotna nigrum, Etheostoma proeliare and Percina sciera represent extensions of previously known ranges within the state.
Tree Ring-Widths In Pinus Ponderosa And Pseudotsuga Menziesii As Indicators Of Past Annual Precipitation, Gerald L. Bliss
Tree Ring-Widths In Pinus Ponderosa And Pseudotsuga Menziesii As Indicators Of Past Annual Precipitation, Gerald L. Bliss
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a study designed to determine how well tree ring-widths in Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii indicate the past annual precipitation in the area of the Rimrock-Tieton Dam, Yakima County, Washington. The study was based on ten trees sampled from a small homogeneous site selected for apparent dryness. A Swedish increment bore was used to extract four cores from each tree. The cores were mounted, dated, measured, and standardized. Linear regression and correlations were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that Pseudotsuga menziesii ring widths are slightly better indicators of the annual precipitation than the ring-widths …
Douglas-Fir Seed Volatile Oils In Seed Detection By Deer Mice, Millard S. Deusen
Douglas-Fir Seed Volatile Oils In Seed Detection By Deer Mice, Millard S. Deusen
All Master's Theses
This study investigated the role of the volatile oils of Douglas-fir seeds in olfactory seed detection by deer mice. The removal of these volatile oils from the seed reduces the ability of the deer mice to detect the seeds.
A method is outlined for the removal of the volatile oils from the seeds as well as a method to purify the oils for possible identification and quantification of individual components.
A Comparison Of Two Artificial Substrates In The Determination Of Net Primary Production, Leland C. Faulconer
A Comparison Of Two Artificial Substrates In The Determination Of Net Primary Production, Leland C. Faulconer
All Master's Theses
This study was to determine if a significant difference exists between two types of artificial substrates used to measure the growth rate of periphyton in a warm spring. Chlorophyll was used as an indirect measure of biomass in comparing the substrates and estimating net primary production. A semi-quantitative algal survey was done for each of the sites sampled.
The study was carried out for one year and it was demonstrated that there was a statistically significant difference between the two substrates.
The Effect Of Applied Nitrogen And Subterranean Clover On The Growth Of Doublegee, D J. Gilbey
The Effect Of Applied Nitrogen And Subterranean Clover On The Growth Of Doublegee, D J. Gilbey
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Until 20 years ago doublegees in Western Australia were mainly confined to the red-brown earth soils of the wheatbelt.
Since then, they have spread to light loamy sand soils in the wheatbelt, many of which have carried subterranean clover from the mid-1940s onwards.
It has been widely presumed that the spread of doublegees on to the lighter sandy soils of W.A. can be associated with the establishment of subterranean clover on these soils.
This report summarises the results of a glasshouse experiment on the effect of clover and nitrogen on the growth of doublegee.
Ecology Of Central Washington Semi-Arid Lands A Documentary Film, Phillip Robert Debusschere
Ecology Of Central Washington Semi-Arid Lands A Documentary Film, Phillip Robert Debusschere
All Master's Theses
Contrasting vegetation patterns on the west side versus the east side of Washington's Cascade Mountains, due primarily to precipitation distribution, are documented on 16mm sound color film with primary emphasis upon the driest vegetation zone of eastern Washington. Interrelationships of climate, soils, vegetation patterns and animal life are shown for climax types of vegetation and those areas since altered to new habitats due to cultivation, water impoundment, fire and grazing. Emphasis is upon the importance of baseline studies of these semi-arid land habitats.
A Taxonomic And Distributional Survey Of The Benthic Blue-Green Algal Flora Of The Skokomish River Estuary, Louis J. Boitano
A Taxonomic And Distributional Survey Of The Benthic Blue-Green Algal Flora Of The Skokomish River Estuary, Louis J. Boitano
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a taxonomic and distributional survey of the benthic blue-green algal flora within an estuary system. Physical parameters were considered in the seasonal growth and distribution of algal species. A majority of the observed species occur in all habitats of the estuary and are present throughout the year. Seasonal growth rates and distribution are primarily dependent upon light intensity, temperature, salinity, and substrate condition. The largest extent of growth and distribution occurs in the late spring and summer months at which time the abiotic factors are most favorable for the development of benthic algal communities.
