Scimitar-Toothed Cats, Machairodus And Nimravides, From The Pliocene Of Kansas And Nebraska, Larry D. Martin, C. Bertrand Schultz
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
"Machairodus catocopis Cope" is shown to be a pseudaelurin cat belonging to the genus Nimravides Kitts. Nimravides thinobates (Macdonald) is a possible synonym of N. catocopis (Cope). Nimravides is compared with the Eurasian Machairodus-like cat, Dinofelis. Machairodus (Heterofelis) coloradensis is reported from the Kimball Formation, upper Pliocene (Kimballian) of Cheyenne County, Nebraska, and from the upper part of the Ash Hollow Formation, Pliocene (Hemphillian) of Sherman County, Nebraska. The Kimballian form is described as a new subspecies, Machairodus coloradensis tanneri.
The genus Machairodus has long been associated with the Hemphillian of North America and the …

The Surveillance Of Rodent Populations In East Africa In Relation To Plague Endemicity, S. Msangi
The Surveillance Of Rodent Populations In East Africa In Relation To Plague Endemicity, S. Msangi
Tanzania Journal of Science
Plague has been endemic in East Africa from very early times. The fact that the plague organism occurring in the area is mostly Pasteurella pestis var. antiqua which is said to have been associated with the Justinian pandemic of the 6th century A. D. would seem to support the contention that this endemicity was established during that pandemic. The maintenance of this endemicity has been made possible by the presence in the area of suitable rodent reservoirs, efficient flea vectors and favourable climatic and ecological conditions. The main reservoirs of plague in East Africa are Rattus rattus, Praomys natalensis and …
Electrochemical Machining (Ecm) With Alternating Current, S. J. Shine
Electrochemical Machining (Ecm) With Alternating Current, S. J. Shine
Tanzania Journal of Science
Electrochemistry has had several practical uses in industry for a long time; but one of the more recent applications is the machining of metals. Direct current ECM has been applied in industry for the last two decades. However, ECM with alternating current is still in the early stage of research and development. This paper shows that ECM with normal a.c supply is feasible and practicable if special tools are used. ECM with d.c. is first introduced to provide a better insight for the machining with a.c.
The Kunduchi Mangrove Basin, Alison Mccusker
The Kunduchi Mangrove Basin, Alison Mccusker
Tanzania Journal of Science
The pattern of tidal submergence and exposure in the Kunduchi mangrove basin is determined by contour mapping and by relating the contours to published tide predictions. Salinity of the creek effluent is measured at spring and neap tides in both wet and dry seasons. The vegetation of the basin, up to the highest high water level, is described briefly.

Annotated Checklist Of Mammals Of The Yucatán Peninsula, México. Iv. Carnivora, Sirenia, Perissodactyla, Artiodactyla, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
This is the fourth in a series of papers by Jones, et al., dealing with the systematics and distributional status of mammals on the Yucatán Peninsula of México. The present contribution lists 24 native species belonging to the orders Carnivora (18 species), Sirenia (one), Perissodactyla (one), and Artiodactyla (four). Among the carnivores there are one canid, six procyonids, six mustelids, and five felids, whereas the Artiodactyla is represented by two families (Tayassuidae and Cervidae), each with two species.
The Yucatán Peninsula as treated in this series of papers includes the Mexican states of Campeche and Yucatan, and the Federal Territory …

Eatonia Sup. 01, Jan. 05, 1975, William L. Peters, Janice Peters
Eatonia
Eatonia was a newsletter established to facilitate communication among scientists working on a group of aquatic insects in the order Ephemeroptera, more commonly known as mayflies. The newsletter is named after Rev. Alfred E. Eaton who studied mayflies in England in the late 1800’s and is considered the “father” of the modern classification of mayflies.

Comparison Of Artificial Substrates In Bottom Fauna Studies On A Large River, David R. Mcconville
Comparison Of Artificial Substrates In Bottom Fauna Studies On A Large River, David R. Mcconville
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
During the summer of 1974, five types of artificial substrates and grab sampling were evaluated for sampling efficiency in pool No. 3 of the Upper Mississippi River. A total of 35 taxa of organisms were collected by the different techniques. Ponar grab sampling collected representatives of only eight taxa, whereas concrete block samplers collected 22 taxa . Intermediate in taxonomic collection were the Hester-Dendy samplers with 21 taxa, the barbecue basket samplers with 20 taxa, the Miller samplers with 17 taxa, and conservation webbing with 12 taxa. The barbecue basket samplers were the most productive, yielding at least five times …

Studies On Schistosome Dermatitis ('Swimmer's Itch") In Minnesota, Donald E. Gilbertson, Richard Wedlund
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A preliminary study was conducted to determine the causative agents of schistosome dermatitis ( "swimmer's itch") in Minnesota and to determine the incidence schistosome infection in vector snails. A total of 1180 snails were collected from ten different localities, eight of which were sites of known schistosome activity . The incidence of schistosome infection in snails from individual areas was always less than 10 percent. Cercariae of Trichobilharzia ocellata from Lymnaea stagnalis were the most frequently-found schistosomes in our study.
A Revision Of The Nearctic Species Of The Genus Phronia (Diptera: Mycetophilidae), Raymond Gagne
A Revision Of The Nearctic Species Of The Genus Phronia (Diptera: Mycetophilidae), Raymond Gagne
USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory
Phronia contains 86 species of small, brown or black mycetophilids. Adults of these fungus gnats are most often caught flying above the forest floor, especially along damp ravines. The fungivorous larvae have been found grazing on slime molds growing on the surface of decaying logs. Most species occur in the Holarctic region, but 1 described and several undescribed species are known from the Ethiopian region. In North America, there are 49 species, 33 of which are known also from Europe.

Effect Of Ronnel On The Honey Bee, William P. Nye
All PIRU Publications
LD50 for worker honey bees of unknown ages exposed to topical applications was 1.5 micrograms/bee in 24 hours. LD50 for similar bees fed ronnel in sugar syrup was 3.0 micrograms/bee in 24 hours. Honey bees did not visit materials treated with ronnel in laboratory tests where bees had a choice between food with and without ronnel added.

A detailed time study of the incorporation of label from sodium-[1-14C]acetate, [1-14C]ethanol, and [2-14C]glucose into the aspartyl moiety of N-acetylaspartic acid (NAA) was conducted. As expected the specific activity of aspartate increased rapidly with time and peaked within 15-20 min after which it fell sharply: but significantly that of the aspartyl moiety of NAA rose very slowly even after the specific activity of aspartate had fallen to less than 1 per cent of the peak values. A rat brain microsomal free supernatant preparation was shown enzymatically to incorporate label from sodium-[l-14C]acetate into the t-RNA fraction from which was isolated N-[1-14C]acetylaspartic …
