The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith
The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
The hypothesis that megafauna extinction some 10,000 years ago was due to "overkill" by Paleolithic hunters is examined using an economic model of a replenishable resource. The large herding animals that became extinct, such as mammoth, bison, camel, and mastodon, presented low hunting cost and high kill value. The absence of appropriation provided incentives for the wastage killing evident in some kill sites, while the slow growth, long lives, and long maturation of large animals increased their vulnerability to extinction. Free-access hunting is compared with socially optimal hunting and used to interpret the development of conservationist ethics, and controls, in …
Herpesvirus Disease Of Salmonids, Ken Wolf, Tokuo Sano, Takahisa Kimura
Herpesvirus Disease Of Salmonids, Ken Wolf, Tokuo Sano, Takahisa Kimura
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
A newly recognized virus, lethal for fry and fingerlings, has been isolated from brood stock rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery, Washington. A similar if not identical virus has been found in natural epizootics occurring annually since 1970 among fry of landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on Honshu Island, Japan. More recently, this agent was isolated from moribund and dead adult O. nerka on Hokkaido Island; Japan, but it remains to be determined whether or not the virus causes death in adult salmonids. The purpose of this leaflet is to bring the …

Fisheries Report No 19 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 1973 - 1974, G. R. Morgan, E H. Barker
Fisheries Research Reports
The fishery for the western rock lobster* is one of the most important single fisheries in Australia and an important export earner for the State. The fishery is governed by a complex set of regulations which have been reviewed by Bowen (1971) and which are designed to limit the total effort to acceptable levels and to enforce a legal minimum size. It is thus important to constantly monitor the state of the fishery both to ensure that the effort is remaining within the accepted limits and that the regulations are adequately performing their function of maintaining reasonably stable catches. Inherent …

Phomopsis : The Causal Fungus Of Lupinosis, P Mcr Wood, A. G. P. Brown
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It is now well known that lupinosis of sheep and cattle follows ingestion of lupin stubble colonised by the fungus Phomopsis rossiana. The fungus infects green lupins but persists on the stubble and under certain conditions apparently produces a toxin which causes the disease.
As Phomopsis is now widespread on lupins in Western Australia its ecology has been studied in detail as a basis for possible control measures.
This article outlines what is known so far of the disease and its control.
Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy
Calcium And Phosphorus Requirements In Lupin Seed Rations For Pigs, N W. Godfrey, A. R. Mercy
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Seed of lupin varieties now available can be combined with wheat or barley to produce a balanced diet for growing/finishing pigs, and lupin seed has become a popular ingredient of pig rations.
As a protein concentrate, lupin seed is a satisfactory alternative to meatmeal, provided adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorus are added as supplements. Without the addition of these elements to rations of lupin seed and grain, a number of problems are likely to arise.
Trials at the Medina Pig Research Station have shown that Christmas Island rock phosphate is the cheapest and most convenient source of supplementary calcium …
The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A feasibility study of fluidized bed high rate - biological waste treatment was performed. Goals of the , investigation were to demonstrate possible advantages of higher treatment rates and compaction of effective reactor volume, and to compare this, system to conventional high rate treatment, in particular, activated sludge.
This system was found to be capable of achieving high rates of Boo 5 removal, producing a, consistent low concentration effluent. Such treatment could be realized in one-fifth the reactor volume required for conventional activated sludge, operating at an equivalent organic loading rate. Less sludge wasting occurred in this system operation than …

The Behaviour Of Swine, J. P. Signoret, B. A. Baldwin, D. Fraser, E. S. E. Hafez
Mammalogy Collection
The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). The two types interbred readily. The modem breeds of pig evolved from different crossings between the two …
Special Report On Controlling America's Pet Population
Special Report On Controlling America's Pet Population
Special Reports
HSUS estimates that public and private animal control programs cost the nation as much as $500 million a year. Much of this expense is required for the feeding and care of unwanted animals during the 5 to 10 days they are held for adoption, killing the 80% that are not adopted or redeemed, and disposing of the carcasses. The result is both an unconscionable waste of life and a needless drain on public and private money.
A large part of the blame for people undertaking pet ownership without having made a total commitment to the animal lies with the pet …

Model For Estimating The Probability Of Crop Production For Ginkgo Biloba L., Michael I. Johnson
Model For Estimating The Probability Of Crop Production For Ginkgo Biloba L., Michael I. Johnson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Mature female Maidenhair trees (Ginkgo biloba L.)have been observed to produce seed dispersal units in some years and none in other years. A temperature and/or photoperiod flowering threshold is suggested. Daily temperatures and daylengths at five Ginkgo sites in continental U.S. for January-April 1964-1974 were evaluated. A computer program was designed to estimate daily photothermal equivalent (PTE = temperature and photoperiod), and the magnitude and duration of the PTE in relation to a series of photothermal constants. Use of the data from production and nonproduction years provided a mathematical model for prediction of dispersal unit production. The model was tested …
Chromosome Counts Of Compositae From The United States, Mexico, And Guatemala, David J. Keil, Tod F. Stuessy
Chromosome Counts Of Compositae From The United States, Mexico, And Guatemala, David J. Keil, Tod F. Stuessy
Biological Sciences
Chromosome numbers can be extremely useful in systematic studies, particularly for helping to reveal evolutionary relationships. For the past fifteen year numerous chromosome reports from plants have been published, especially in the Compositae, and these counts have been compiled in several major sources (Darlington & Wylie, 1955; Cave, 1958-65; Ornduff, 1967-69; Fedorov, 1969; Moore, 1970-72). However, a rapid glance through these references indicates not only that many species never have been counted, but also that many taxa are known only from a single plant in one population. In view of the common occurrence of euploid and aneuploid races in plants …

Decide : How Much Superphosphate, G A. Robertson, J. W. Bowden, N. J. Halse
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
* A 400 per cent increase in ihe price of superphosphate has reduced the economic optimum rates of super for crops and pastures in 1975.
* Many factors, both biological and economic, must be taken into account in determining the rate of superphosphate to apply.
• DECIDE, a model developed by CSIRO and the Department of Agriculture, provides a formal system in which all these factors can be considered.
• DECIDE is based on the results of all research on superphosphate carried out in Western Australia. However, each farmer's own knowledge of his farm, the soils, crops and animals is …
