A Pollen Selection System For Alcohol-Dehydrogenase-Negative Mutants In Plants, Drew Schwartz, John Osterman
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Exposure of freshly shed maize pollen to allyl alcohol vapors allows selective fertilization by mutant alcohol-dehydrogenase-negative grains. Wild-type pollen grains are killed by the enzymatic conversion of allyl alcohol to the highly toxic acrylaldehyde.
Anatomical Observations On Floating Leaves, Robert B. Kaul
Anatomical Observations On Floating Leaves, Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
An examination of 24 genera of aquatic plants having floating leaves and leaf-like thalli has been made. Functional stomata occur on the adaxial sides of floating leaves of angiosperms and some ferns, and in some floating leaves there are stomata on the abaxial surface as well. Most floating leaves have prominently chambered mesophyll, and in some instances the chambers are locally enlarged and form buoys.

Incorporation Of Phosphoproteins And Phenol-Bound Proteins Into The Cuticle Of Periplaneta Americana, Joseph Atchison Florence Iv
Incorporation Of Phosphoproteins And Phenol-Bound Proteins Into The Cuticle Of Periplaneta Americana, Joseph Atchison Florence Iv
Theses and Dissertations
The incorporation of phosphoproteins and phenol-bound proteins into the cuticle of Periplaneta americana was analyzed. Radioactive monosodium phosphate was injected into newly ecdysed cockroaches. Incorporation into haemolymph proteins as well as tanned cuticle was observed. Phosphoproteins were observed to be combined with the cuticle to a greater extent than monosodium phosphate. This suggests that phosphate is being incorporated into the cuticle more readily than monosodium phosphate. The relevance of these observations is discussed in light of phosphate being a possible crosslinking agent between chitin and cuticle protein.
Binding of dopamine metabolites to cuticle proteins was investigated. Specific metabolites studied were …
The Effect Of Social Rank Of Male Swordtails (Xiphophorus Helleri) On Sexual Behavior, Janet N. Marum
The Effect Of Social Rank Of Male Swordtails (Xiphophorus Helleri) On Sexual Behavior, Janet N. Marum
Masters Theses
The relationship between social rank and sexual behavior of the male swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) was studied. Initially three tanks were established with three males and two females in each. Social rank, aggressive and sexual levels were recorded by observation of the interactions which occurred in the tanks. A second series of observations were made with the fish regrouped according to their initial rank, that is, dominant males grouped together, middle ranking males together and the lowest ranking males together. Aggressive and sexual levels were the highest for the highest ranking males in all tanks and in both trials, …

Blood Parasites Of Illinois Wild Turkeys, Ulrike G. Guenthner
Masters Theses
Blood smears, from 152 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) killed during hunting seasons in southern Illinois, were examined for blood parasites. Haemoproteus meleagridis infected 34% of the 83 adult and 19% of the 69 immature turkeys. Of the infected birds, 54% had one or two infected cells per 5000 erythrocytes and 78% had one to five. Infection rates were significantly higher in counties along the Mississippi River than in Pope County, located about 40 miles east of the river. Other parasites specifically searched for but not found were Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium, Trypanosoma and microfilaria.

Biology And Distribution Of The Macrocoelenterates Of Mississippi Sound And Adjacent Waters, W. David Burke
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Studies conducted in Mississippi Sound from April 1971 through June 1973 elucidated the seasonal and areal distribution of seven species of macrocoelenterates: Aurelia aurita (L), Chrysaora quinquecirrhu (Desor 1848), Pelagia noctiluca Forskål 1775, Chiropsalmus quadrumantus (Miiller 1859), Rhopilema verrillii (Fewkes 1887), Stomolophus meleagris L. Agassiz 1862, and Physalia physalis (L). Physical parameters presumed relevant to the distribution of each of these animals are presented. Developmental histories of certain of these forms are described.

Penaeid Shrimp Distributions In Mobile Bay, Alabama, Including Low-Salinity Records, Harold C. Loesch
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Low-salinity records in the Gulf of Mexico area for taking Penaeus duorarum in water of 0.7‰ and 28°C, and Penaeus aztecus in water of 0.2‰ and 29.5°C were established in Mobile Bay, Alabama. Catches in Mobile Bay of approximately 20,000 each of P. aztecus and Penaeus setiferus, distributed over a 30-month period, show that P. aztecus taken in the hotter months had a wider salinity preference (5 to 30‰) than those taken in the cooler months (10 to 15‰). During the warmer months P. setiferus was most common in waters below 5‰ and during the winter months was almost …

Growth Of The Shrimp, Penaeus Aztecus, Fed A Diet Of Live Mysids (Crustacea: Mysidacea), John Ogle, Wayne Price
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Commercial brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) were shown to consume large numbers of mysid shrimp (Mysidopsis almyra) under laboratory conditions. Growth of shrimp fed a diet of mysids was comparable to growth of shrimp fed a diet of Artemia nauplii. It is suggested that mysid shrimp may serve as a food source for juvenile penaeid shrimp in northwestern Gulf coast estuaries.
The Functional Development Of The Adrenal-Sympathetic Nervous System In Neonatal And Adolescent Swine, Sidney Koon Hung Woo
The Functional Development Of The Adrenal-Sympathetic Nervous System In Neonatal And Adolescent Swine, Sidney Koon Hung Woo
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The development of the animal after birth is marked by complex changes. Certain periods are particularly important and have been defined as "critical periods" (Krecek, 1971). Two processes are important to the survival of the animals during these times. The process of "adaptation" involves the maturation of specific physiological systems according to the needs of the neonatal animal, and is dictated by the external environment. The process of "tolerance" renders the neonate relatively unresponsive to a stressor as compared to the adult and protects the animals from over-responding the depleting vital resources until it is physiologically mature. An example of …
The Structure Of Experimental Clastic-Substrate Marine Communities, Wayne Aloysius Evans
The Structure Of Experimental Clastic-Substrate Marine Communities, Wayne Aloysius Evans
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is hypothesized that difference between containers and between sediments will produce structural differences in the resulting communities by intensifying competition for resources, and by excluding certain classes of predators. It is also hypothesized that the level of the effect of container, substrate, and time on community structures will be dependent on tidal level.
Paine (1969) and Dayton (1972) have demonstrated that the structure of some communities is largely determined by the effects of foundation, or keystone, species. It is suggested that the structure of classic-substrate communities may be determined similarly.
Photoevoked Response Of The Optic Tectum In Larval Stage Xii And Juvenile Rana Catesbeiana, Michael Gale Phillips
Photoevoked Response Of The Optic Tectum In Larval Stage Xii And Juvenile Rana Catesbeiana, Michael Gale Phillips
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The previous cytological and electrophysiological work suggests that the optic tectum matures during metamorphic climax. It was the aim of the present work to attempt to compare pre metamorphic (Stage XII) larval and post metamorphic juvenile, Rana catesbeiana, using a photostimulated evoked electroencephalographic (E.E.G.) response in the optic tectum and correlate that with tissue studies to verify neurophysiological maturation of the optic tectum.

Technique For Estimating Trawl Efficiency In Catching Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus), Atlantic Croaker (Micropogon Undulatus) And Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus), Harold Loesch, James Bishop, Arthur Crowe, Robin Kuckyr, Paul Wagner
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Mark-recapture experiments conducted in a small 17.5 ha lake in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, were used to estimate the efficiency of a 4.9-m (16-foot) otter trawl in capturing brown shrimp, Atlantic croaker, and spot in water 1.5 m deep. The trawl was observed to sweep an area 2.5 m in width. Trawl efficiency was determined to be approximately one-third to one-half for brown shrimp, one-fourth for Atlantic croaker, and only 6 percent for spot.

Corticosterone Levels And The Critical Period In Imprinting Behavior Of Domestic Chicks, Lorraine Feldman
Biology ETDs
The following research was undertaken to monitor a glucocorticoid corticosterone to determine whether or not a reduction in glucocorticoids occurs during the critical period of imprinting behavior. Two groups of domestic chicks (Schaffer white Leghorns) were incubated, hatched and maintained under brooding conditions prior to imprinting procedures. Chicks were first divided into seven age groups, four hour intervals, beginning at hatching. The critical period of imprinting behavior was established with Group I. Success of imprinting training in this group was tested 24 hours after the training sessions. The second group provided blood samples taken after imprinting training sessions; they were …
Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum
Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum
Biology ETDs
Eighteen morphological features were measured for 103 species of insectivorous bats found throughout North America. These characters were standardized to a mean of zero and a standard deviation of unity. Using these morphological characters, thirty-one distinct faunas, ranging from a Boreal Forest fauna with three species to a Wet Tropical fauna with 50 species, were analyzed in an 18-dimensional mathematical hyperspace with the numerical taxonomic techniques of distance, correlation and principal components.
The results show that tropical faunas occupy a greater morphological hypervolume than temperate-zone faunas. Morphological packing is not greater in tropical faunas, and it appears that a limiting …
Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen
Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of bunamidine hydrochloride against the immature and mature stages of Echinococcus granulosus found in Utah. Twenty-seven dogs were obtained from local animal shelters and experimentally infected with the parasite. The drug was given at dosage levels of 25 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg of bodyweight. It was from 85.9 to 98.8% effective against the immature stage, and 100% effective against the adult stage. The results suggest that this drug can feasibly be used under field conditions where hydatid disease is endemic.
