Investigation Into The Sex Pheromones Of Two Species Of Flies: Sarcophaga Bullata And Musca Domestica, F. Joseph Germino '77
Fenwick Scholar Program
Attempts to find effective, environmentally safe methods to control insect infestations have been met with limited success. Pheromonal control has received considerable attention in the past decade because of its inherent desirable characteristics. The author spent his senior year searching for the sex pheromones of two different species of flies - the house fly (Musca domestica) and the flesh fly (Sarcophaga bullata). There is strong evidence to identify Hexanal as one of the components of the sex pheromone of the flesh fly (Sarcophaga bullata).

Some Helminths From Salamanders Of California, José Joaquín Castro
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Studies on the helminth parasites of salamanders from California have been very limited.
Between September 1975 and April 1977, 340 salamander belonging to seven species, Aneides flavipunctatus (7), A. lugubris (7), Batrachoceps attenuatus attenuatus (250), Ensatina eschscholtzii eschscholtzii (52), E. e. sierrae (17), Taricha torosa (6), and Dicamptodon ensatus (1), were examined for helminths and found to harbor 10 species, four of which are new. The parasites found are: Cestoda: Distoichometra ensatinae sp. nov. from Ensatina e. eschscholtzii and E. e. sierrae; and Baerietta diana (Helfer, 1948) Douglas, 1958 from Batrachoceps a. attenuatus. Nematoda: Dibulbiger caballeroi sp. nov. from Dicamptodon …
Cornposting Converts Waste Into Valuable Resources, Leon Chesnin
Cornposting Converts Waste Into Valuable Resources, Leon Chesnin
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Rural and urban communities and farms have at least one problem in common: the accumulation of various organic wastes. Farms produce wastes such as animal manures, and crop residues such as straw, corn cobs, hay stack bottoms and spoiled silage.
In Nebraska's towns and cities, the organic wastes include sewage sludge, paunch manure from slaughter houses, and garbage originating from household foods and paper.
Some of these organic wastes are associated with the nuisances of flies, odors and dust. Fresh animal manures, paunch manure, sewage sludge and garbage are favorite breeding places for flies. Flies are attracted to odors and …

Bulletin No 4023 - Pasture Plants Of The Western Australian Shrublands, D G. Wilcox, J G. Morrissey
Bulletins 4000 -
The use of the shrubland pastures of Western Australia began in 1861 when Mr. W. Burges of the Bowes Station near Northampton sent a flock of sheep along the Greenough River to graze the country where Yuin station is today. Following his example, a number of other enterprising men established grazing areas along the river courses of this harsh and often drought stricken and forbidding land. By 1925, virtually all of the pastoral land of value in the mulga zone west of the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert had been developed, and by 1934, over four million sheep …
Sedimentation Coefficients Of The Virions Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus, Myron K. Brakke
Sedimentation Coefficients Of The Virions Of Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The sedimentation coefficient of virion I of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus was estimated to be 219S, the same, within error, as the sedimentation coefficient of the dimer of virion II, estimated to be 218S. The monomer of virion II sedimented at 177S, and was 138 nm long. Another strain of the virus had a virion II (designated lIb) that was 92 nm long and sedimented at 159S. The two virus strains coexist in some fields.
Enucleation And Reconstruction Of Interferon-Producing Cells, D. C. Burke, G. Veomett
Enucleation And Reconstruction Of Interferon-Producing Cells, D. C. Burke, G. Veomett
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Enucleation of L cells leads to loss of the capacity to produce interferon, showing that the cell nucleus is essential for interferon formation. However, when the cells were enucleated while interferon formation was proceeding, the cytoplasts were capable of continuing to synthesize interferon by a process shown to be protein synthesis, showing that the interferon messenger RNA leaves the nucleus after synthesis. Reconstructed cells were obtained by Sendai virus fusion of karyoplasts and cytoplasts. Such reconstructed cells were capable of producing at least as much interferon (43 interferon units/104 nucleated cells) as control cells (31 interferon units/104 nucleated …

Hormdne-Inducible Casein Messenger Rna In A Serum-Free Organ Culture Of Whole Mammary Gland, P. M. Terry, M. R. Banerjee, R. M. Lui
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The whole second thoracic mammary gland of estradiol-17β + progesterone primed 3- to 4-week-old BALB/c female mice was induced to pregnancy-like lobulo-alveolar morphogenesis after 6-day cultivation in a serum-free culture medium containing a "growth promoting" hormone mixture, insulin + prolactin + growth hormone (somatotropin) + estradiol + progesterone. No radioimmunologically detectable casein was present in these glands. Subsequent cultivation for another 6 days in a "lactogenic" medium with the hormones insulin + prolactin + cortisol produced abundant milk-like secretory material in the alveolar lumen. RNA of the mammary gland after estradiol + progesterone priming or cultivation in the "growth-promoting" medium …

Studies On The Genus Streptococcus, Janet Lee Storey
Studies On The Genus Streptococcus, Janet Lee Storey
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The streptococci, as a group, are gram positive cocci which occur in pairs or chains; they are nonmotile, nonsporing, and catalase negative. Most species are facultative anaerobes, and a few are obligate anaerobes. They are chemorganotrophs producing lactic acid as an end product of glucose metabolism. The G + C (guanine + cytosine) content reported for 15 species is 33-42% (Diebel and Seeley, 1974). The genus Streptococcus includes a large number of saprophytic, pathogenic and non pathogenic species. Many of these bacteria are members of the normal body flora. However, man is very susceptible to the pathogenic members, and no …
Comparative Anatomy And Systematics Of Picrodendron, Genus Incertae Sedis, W. John Hayden
Comparative Anatomy And Systematics Of Picrodendron, Genus Incertae Sedis, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
This study of the vegetative anatomy of Picrodendron and some of its putative relatives has been undertaken in order better to understand its natural relationships. Despite the number of anatomical studies in the literature (Jadin, 1901; Solereder, 1908; Boas, 1913; Webber, 1936; Heimsch, 1942; Record & Hess, 1943; Metcalfe & Chalk, 1950), our information on the anatomy of Picrodendron is still incomplete· for example, nodal and petiolar anatomy has apparently never been described. Furthermore, with the exception of Record and Hess (1943), who discussed Picrodendron in a family by itself, other anatomists have compared Picrodendron only with members of Simaroubaceae, …
Interrelationships Of Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Bathyplectes Curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) In Illinois With Emphasis On Host-Parasite Densities, Distribution Of Parasites Within Available Hosts And Estimates Of Percent Parasitism, Robert John Barney
Masters Theses
In an attempt to better understand the host-parasite relationship of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), all life stages of the parasite were monitored throughout the spring. Sampling was conducted on a degree day basis from early March to late May in an alfalfa field in Mason County, Illinois.
Dissections of host alfalfa weevil larvae revealed 2nd and 3rd host instars were preferred larvae for oviposition. Peak parasite densities were found to precede peak total host larval densities, but coincided with peak densities of the preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Larger host …
Aquatic Plant Communities Of East-Central Illinois, Randolph Lee Vogel
Aquatic Plant Communities Of East-Central Illinois, Randolph Lee Vogel
Masters Theses
Aquatic plant communities of east-central Illinois were studied during the late summers of 1971 and 1976. Frequencies, relative frequencies and frequency of dominance were calculated for the various taxa. At the pond level, changes in the flora over the 5-year span have taken place, usually consisting of the addition or subtraction of one species. Overall, however, it was found that the aquatic community has remained relatively static, as has the percentage of ponds lacking aquatic plants. Factors influencing distributions and sterility are discussed and it was concluded that all the factors play varying roles, but no one factor or combination …
Germination Study Of Dormant Cercis Canadensis L. Seed, Glenn Hosokawa
Germination Study Of Dormant Cercis Canadensis L. Seed, Glenn Hosokawa
Masters Theses
Cercis canadensis L. (redbud) seeds have been shown to require both scarification and stratification before germination occurs. Seeds which were leached prior to the scarification-stratification treatments were found to germinate more quickly, and CaSO4 solution was found to enhance germination. However, the percent germination remained approximately the same and leaching failed to substitute for the stratification requirement. Extraction studies indicated that germination inhibitors were present in scarified-non stratified seeds, however, the presence of germination promoters in scarified-stratified seeds could not be demonstrated. Germination occurred in either light or dark conditions. Gibberellic acid was found to substitute for stratification, and …

Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar
Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar
Masters Theses
The pre-adult viability of four pure strains and two hybrid strains was determined for Drosophila melanogaster. The data fail to show significant mortality and the ratios of the duration of the three different stages remained approximately constant. There are many factors which have been found to affect survivorship; one factor is density. As density of population within a limited and closed universe increases, the rate of mortality would increase and viability would generally decrease. However, our densities were well within the range having no effect on viability. Under the conditions these experiments were performed, no genetic or environmental factors …

Seasonal Diversities Of Lotic And Lentic Benthic Insect Populations, Jerry E. Bindel
Seasonal Diversities Of Lotic And Lentic Benthic Insect Populations, Jerry E. Bindel
Masters Theses
The benthic insect populations from Lake Charleston and the Embarras River above and below Lake Charleston were examined twice monthly for seasonal differences in number of organisms, number of taxa and species diversity from October 13, 1976 to February 16, 1977. The water quality parameters of alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature were also examined for each site to determine if any parameter showed a sufficient deviation as to exert an influence on the benthic insect populations. Low dissolved oxygen and high carbon dioxide values were noted and occurred at times corresponding to lower numbers of taxa and …

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers
A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers
Masters Theses
The establishment of normal chromosomal patterns for a wide range of plants and animals has led to the recognition of abnormalities as well as their relationship to phenotypic irregularities. Research dealing with the expression of human karyotype is of prime interest; but, closely rivaling that is the genetic study of domestic animals which are of economic importance to man.
One observed anomaly which has come under scrutiny by cytogeneticists is that of the female member of a heterogeneous bovine twin pair, the freemartin. This is a sterile animal with internal morphology showing varying degrees of intersex. Cytogenetic studies reveal XX/XY …

Calcification And Productivity In A Dominant Shallow Water Reef Building Coral, Acropora Palmata (Lamarck), Elizabeth H. Gladfelter
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are "constructional physiographic features of tropical seas consisting fundamentally of a rigid calcareous framework made up mainly of the interlocked and encrusting skeletons of reef-building (hermatypic) corals (Wells,1957). The principal organisms responsible for the construction of modern day coral reefs, the stony corals, comprise the cnidarian order Scleractinia, which is closely allied to the sea anemones (Actinaria). Individual polyps secrete a calcium carbonate skeletal cup (calyx) beneath the basal epidermis. In most coral species the polyps remain connected by living tissue forming a colony and calcium carbonate is deposited beneath the basal epidermis of the entire colony, thereby …
A Comparative Study Of The Vascular Plants Of Three Vernal Pools In The San Joaquin Valley, California, Robert Howard Smookler
A Comparative Study Of The Vascular Plants Of Three Vernal Pools In The San Joaquin Valley, California, Robert Howard Smookler
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Today a good deal is known about the general nature and flora of vernal pools. Nevertheless, there is very limited information or actual documentation in the scientific literature. Vernal pools need to be studied more extensively. and they still offer unlimited opportunities for such research (Holland and Griggs 1976).
The purpose of this investigation was to enumerate and compare the vascular plant species occurring at three vernal pools in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator Of The Cation Transport Adenosinetriphosophatase In Bovine Caudate Nucleus, Paul Culver
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
To many investigators, these observations suggested the existence of a molecular “pump” mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the ionic gradients. Extensive research over the last twenty years has resulted in the assignment of this role to the magnesium-dependent, sodium- and potassium-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase, first reported by Skou in 1957. This membrane-bound enzyme is the subject of the research presented in this thesis.
