Yellow-Crowned Night Herons Sighted In North Dakota, Dennis G. Jorde, Gary L. Krapu, Robert K. Green

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) sighted at four locations in North Dakota during 1976 appear to be the first observations of this species for the State. We sighted a single individual about 8 km south of Medina, North Dakota in western Stutsman County during several visits in June and July 1976. The bird was first seen on 23 June standing in a pasture adjoining an 8.5 ha semi-permanent marsh. On following visits, the heron usually was seen perched in trees at the edge of the wetland. A single yellow-crowned night heron was sighted on the same wetland on …

Rotifers In Lake Itasca, Judy Helgen Jan 1977

Rotifers In Lake Itasca, Judy Helgen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Rotifers were collected from both the Littoral and Limnetic zones in Lake Itasca, Clearwater County, Minnesota, during two weeks in midsummer. In total, 82 species of rotifers were found, and 69 were identified to species. The littoral zone produced 67 species of rotifers, primarily associated with the aquatic macrophytes. While 35 species were collected in the limnetic zone, only 13 of them were restricted to that habitat. Species are listed by habitat and by type of plant on which they occurred.

Response Of Setaria Faberii To High Lime Soils, Nancy Huang, Russell S. Adams Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Setaria faberii (giant foxtail) was observed to grow poorly in some calcareous soils or upon the addition of calcium carbonate to some acid soils. The data suggest that liming might be a feasible and practical tool in the control of this major weed pest.

An Electrophoretic Study Of Caecal Proteins Of Clinostomum Marginatum (Trematoda), Dale E. Greenwalt, Harold A. Borchers Jan 1977

An Electrophoretic Study Of Caecal Proteins Of Clinostomum Marginatum (Trematoda), Dale E. Greenwalt, Harold A. Borchers

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Whole-worm extracts of Clinostomum marginatum were subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Gels of early stage metacercariae, late-stage metacercariae and adult worms contained 26,24, and 27 protein bands respectively. The protein band patterns of the three stages were similar except for 1) a hemoglobin band in gels of adult extracts and 2) a large increase in the quantity of four anodic bands of late-stage gels. The proteins constituting these four bands were present in the caecal contents of late-stage metacercariae . These same proteins were also found in metacercarial cysts as part of an exuded material left behind by the fluke …

Ultrastructure Of Lymphocystis In The Heart Of The Silver Perch, Bairdiella Chrysura (Lacépède), Including Observations On Normal Heart Structure, Harold D. Howse, Adrian R. Lawler, William E. Hawkins, Carolyn A. Foster Jan 1977

Foster

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The fine structure of normal heart muscle from the silver perch, Bairdiella chrysura (Lacépède), is similar to that previously reported for marine and freshwater teleosts.

Cardiac lymphocystis is a viral disease manifested by single, giant-cell lesions variously located in the epicardium, trabecular spaces, and subendocardium – in direct apposition to myocardial cells. Occasionally, the hyaline capsule of lymphocystis cells partially surround myocardial cells but cause no pathological changes or inflammatory reaction.

The lymphocystis cells contain typical cellular organelles, including the viroplasmic net unique to these cells. Annulate lamellae, often continuous with the rough endoplasmic reticulum, are present, usually along the …

The Eye Lens Weight Technique In Aging Of The Atlantic Croaker, Micropogon Undulatus, Constantine E. Mericas Jan 1977

The Eye Lens Weight Technique In Aging Of The Atlantic Croaker, Micropogon Undulatus, Constantine E. Mericas

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The eye lens weight to age relationship was examined in croaker, Micropogon undulatus. Lenses were removed, fixed, and weighed using standard techniques. Age estimates were assigned based on total length measurements. Lens weight showed good correlation with total length. Age could be estimated by eye lens weight, but no more accurately or precisely than with length frequency analysis. Cumulative percent frequency analysis of lens weights showed distinct inflections in the curve, which correspond to hypothesized length at age points. The data seem to verify age structure based on length frequency analysis.

Location Of The Mississippi Sound Oyster Reefs As Related To Salinity Of Bottom Waters During 1973-1975, Charles K. Eleuterius Jan 1977

Location Of The Mississippi Sound Oyster Reefs As Related To Salinity Of Bottom Waters During 1973-1975, Charles K. Eleuterius

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The relationship of producing natural oyster reefs of Mississippi Sound to the salinity regime of bottom waters is investigated. Extreme and average conditions were extracted from data taken at 87 stations over a 21-month period from June 1973 through February 1975. With one exception, the producing reefs were subjected to salinity minimums of 2.0 to 4.0 parts per thousand (ppt), maximums of 18.0 to 22.0 ppt, with average conditions being between 10.0 and 16.0 ppt. Salinity-suitable areas in the Sound not now inhabited by oysters are described.

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The Northern Gannet nests on rock cliffs in the north Atlantic and winters as far south as Yucatan on the west, and N.W. Africa on the east. The birds are not known to cross land and seem to fly around Florida to enter the Gulf of Mexico. Most numbers have been reported off Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle. Numbers in the western Gulf seem to be few. There are 12 skeletal parts or skins of Texas gannets in museums in Texas and Louisiana. Two specimens have been collected in Louisiana, only one of which is known to remain. …

Purification And Properties Of Lysozyme From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Bacteriophage 7v, Lynne Vernice Mcfarland Jan 1977

Purification And Properties Of Lysozyme From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Bacteriophage 7v, Lynne Vernice Mcfarland

Dissertations and Theses

A lysozyme from Bacteriophage 7v was purified 7.7 fold over the original lysates of the bacteriophage 7v and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PS-7. This purification process includes ultracentrifugation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis, and fractionation in a Sephadex G-150 column. The phage lysozyme exhibits a greater specificity when assayed with P. aeruginosa cells as a substrate, but still is capable of acting on the standard lysozyme Micrococcus lysodeikticus substrate. The pH optimum, heat inactivation range, and action on other bacteria is described. The molecular weight was found to be 14,300. The values of this 7v phage lysozyme are in close agreement with values …

Localization Of Neurosecretory Cells Within The Cerebral Ganglia Of Amphiphorus Imparispinosus Griffin, 1898 (Hoplonemertea) And Their Possible Regulatory Role In The Annual Reproductive Cycle, Gail H. Jacobson Jan 1977

Localization Of Neurosecretory Cells Within The Cerebral Ganglia Of Amphiphorus Imparispinosus Griffin, 1898 (Hoplonemertea) And Their Possible Regulatory Role In The Annual Reproductive Cycle, Gail H. Jacobson

Dissertations and Theses

Nemerteans are common invertebrates along coastlines in both temperate and arctic climates throughout the world. Amphiphorus imparispinosus is a carnivorous member of this phylum that is found abundantly in the intertidal areas of the Oregon coast. As in many other invertebrate phyla, endocrine integration within the nemerteans is thought to be accomplished by neurosecretory mechanisms. In Amphiphorus the presence of these neurosecretory systems has not been previously shown. This project was undertaken to determine if neurosecretory cells are present within the central nervous system of this species and. further, to examine seasonal changes in the number and appearance of these …

The Dispersal And Dispersion Patterns Of Hydra Fusca In A Limited Environment, Faith E. Ruffing Jan 1977

The Dispersal And Dispersion Patterns Of Hydra Fusca In A Limited Environment, Faith E. Ruffing

Dissertations and Theses

The dispersal and dispersion patterns of Hydra fusca were examined. Hydra were placed in petri dishes at various densities. The water in the dishes was swirled forcing the animals to the center. The location of each animal was marked at time intervals thereafter. Analyses of the dispersal rates and dispersion patterns were made. Hydra dispersed from a central release point at a non-random rate. There was rapid movement from the center followed by a minimal daily movement. This eventually resulted in a uniform dispersion pattern at high densities in a limited environment. There was a relationship between the ratio of …

Live Trap Preference Among Grassland Mammals, Robert K. Rose, Norman A. Slade, James H. Honacki

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In two independent studies, small mammals of grassland communities in eastern Kansas, when given a choice, preferred Fitch to Sherman live traps. Except for the harvest mice in the demographic study, the type of preferred trap and magnitude of selection was remarkably comparable, with microtines showing slight, and cricetines strong, preferences overall. The merits of each type of trap are compared, and related to season, weather, prior experience, and trap-associated mortality.

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos Jan 1977

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Milk protein has been implicated as a factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Significantly higher titers of antibodies (P < 0.0002) toward milk antigens were observed in patients suffering from coronary heart disease as compared to age matched controls. These hemagglutination titers were not sex related but may have been related to age. Specificity of the antigen-antibody reaction was demonstrated by a hemagglutination inhibition test. The complement fixation test was evaluated and was less sensitive than the tanned hemaggIutination test. Treatment with 2-mercapto-ethanol resulted in reduced hemagglutination titers, indicating that significant antibody activity may be due to IgM. A special application of the Combs test detected specific antibodies on the surface of tanned and coated RBC which did not otherwise produce detectable agglutination.

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare Jan 1977

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Treatment of bovine brain mitochondrial hexokinase with a fivefold molar excess of tetranitromethane (TNM) at pH 8.0 results in a complete loss of activity of the enzyme. Spectral measurements and amino acid analysis showed that only cysteinyl residues were modified by TNM under these conditions. The products of the reaction of TNM with the enzyme were cysteic acid and disulfides as found by amino acid analysis of the carboxymethylated hexokinase. Failure of 2-mercaptoethanol to reverse the effect of TNM suggested that the thiol group that is oxidized to cysteic acid is the one essential for enzyme activity. Substrates glucose and …
