Development Of Circadian Sleep-Wakefulness Rhythm In A Healthy Boy Gauged By Circadian Quotients, Ellen Reeker, Michael Diffley Jan 1963

Development Of Circadian Sleep-Wakefulness Rhythm In A Healthy Boy Gauged By Circadian Quotients, Ellen Reeker, Michael Diffley

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The circadian quotient, briefly CQ, serves to estimate the prominence of a rhythm with a period of about 24 hours. The CQ may be computed from so-called variance spectrum analysis, among other procedures ( 1) . Computational details and some applications have been discussed earlier (1 , 2). We wish to illustrate herein the use of the CQ for gauging the development of a circadian sleep-wakefulness rhythm in the senior author's first-born child, FAR, also documented in general terms, elsewhere ( 3).

Information—A Problem Of The Research Scientist, Burton W. Adkinson Jul 1962

Information—A Problem Of The Research Scientist, Burton W. Adkinson

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

“What you don't know won't hurt you" is a cliche whose lack of validity probably is exceeded only by its age. Think what an unlighted, open manhole at night can do to you! A paraphrase of this old saw that I think can be defended, at least in the context of my remarks today, is that "What you don't need, needn't worry you." The really serious problems are posed by the things and services you need badly and are unable to obtain. It is only because prompt, reliable access to accurate scientific information is so necessary to good research that …

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud Jul 1962

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud

Masters Theses

Introduction

Alcoholism: The Disease

"Alcoholism is a chronic disease manifested by repeated implicative drinking so as to cause injury to the drinker's health or to his social or economic functioning" (53). Such a definition of alcoholism points to the disease concept which went unrecognized until recent years. In addition to its medical implications, alcoholism has been the subject of considerable writing and research by academicians in such diverse fields as sociology, psychology, physiology, psychiatry, theology, and law.

At the outset it should be noted that the writer is aware of the arguments and opinions expressed by the advocates of the …

A Manual For Training Food Service Supervisors In Brazil, Rosalynn Case

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was done to develop a manual to be used in instructing food service supervisors in Brazil.

The need for the study was established when the writer was asked to direct a training course for food service supervisors in Brazil. Correspondence with dietitians in Brazil reveled that there was a definite need for a manual which presents current scientific, and technological information.

Current literature was reviewed and studied to determine present concepts in each of the areas of food service supervision and management. A manual of instruction was then prepared which included these concepts.

In the manual suggestions were …

Body weight is fast becoming the major health problem in the United States. Recent estimates of the number of weight conscious people in the United States are now up to 75 million. One year ago the estimate of overweight individuals was 60 million Americans who were overweight or should be concerned about watching their weight. There are also two million known diabetics who must control their disease and body weight by a restricted caloric intake.

Texas And Technology, Martin Goland

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to talk with you about the Texas scene and its stake in science and technology. The force of science in modern society is a compelling one, reaching into virtually every aspect of our lives, and the future health of our state and our nation hinges in large measure on the extent to which we plan wisely to have technology serve our ends, rather than control our destiny.

A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites Jun 1961

A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1957, Nishimura 74 made a startling proposition that linked collagen disease with hereditary metabolic defects. This defect was stated to be in the metabolism of tyrosine. Based on this report, a pilot study was conducted in which six rheumatoid arthritis patients and one scleroderma case were treated with a low phenylalanine and tyrosine diet.

The diets supplied approximately 1500 calories and 36 grams of protein. No more than 1500 mg. combined phenylalanine and tyrosine were given in any one day. Lofenalac was used as the principle source of protein.

During the six week test period laboratory studies were carried …

A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker Jun 1961

A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The specter of addiction eventually involves everyone of the community. It is a three-fold problem of socio-economic, psychological, and physiological factors. The least understood is the physiological or biochemical aspect of addiction.

It has been postulated that an upset in carbohydrate metabolism may be a biochemical cause of addiction. Several avenues were employed to investigate this possible cause of addiction.

  1. A diet survey was conducted and revealed a greater consumption of refined carbohydrates, confections and alcoholic beverages in addicts.

  2. Five-hour oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on 7 addicts and 12 non-addicts. These tests revealed that there were decreased glucose …

Studies On The Relationship Of The Redside Shiner (Richardsonius Balteatus) And The Longnose Sucker (Catostomus Catostomus) To The Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) Popluation In Yellowstone Lake, Kenneth E. Biesinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Biologists have been concerned about the presence of longnose suckers (Catostomus catostomus) and redside shiners (Richarsonius balteatus)and their effect on the cutthroat trout population in Yellowstone Lake. This investigation was made to determine the distribution and certain interactions of these species with cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake. The effects of the presence of lake chub (Hybopsis plumbea) and longnose dace (Rhinichtys cataractae) are considered to a lesser extent.

Land Tenure Problems In Iran, Jalil Mahmoudi May 1961

Land Tenure Problems In Iran, Jalil Mahmoudi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Land tenure problems throughout the Middle East and most of the underdeveloped countries of the world are considered by competent international organizations and many students of world problems as one of the greatest contributing forces to social unrest and a barrier to economic development.

When the United Nations' General Assembly at its fifth session in 1950, had under discussion the problem of land reform in many underdeveloped countries, the consensus of opinions were that the conditions affecting land reform reduced agricultural productivity and were a major cause of low standards of living for the populations of those countries. The General …

Observations Of Pituitary Hormone Injections And Ripening Of Fish, D. K. Kaushik May 1961

Observations Of Pituitary Hormone Injections And Ripening Of Fish, D. K. Kaushik

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A dependable source of quality fish spawn is a fundamental prerequisite for fish culture development. This is especially important inasmuch as most of the cultivable species do not breed in confined waters. Also, sport fisheries are gaining greater popularity, and subsequently the fish supply is being taxed. Still another need for fish spawn is in the ever increasing demand for bait minnows. Also, the construction of more and more dams has resulted in insurmountable obstacles for ascending and descending fish, which may ultimately result in complete destruction of some fisheries. Thus some measure of artificial propagation will have to be …

Some Aspects Of Sport-Fishing Yields From Minnesota Lakes, Warren J. Scidmore Jan 1961

Some Aspects Of Sport-Fishing Yields From Minnesota Lakes, Warren J. Scidmore

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The value of angling as a recreational feature is generally recognized by everyone in Minnesota. About one adult Minnesotan in three fishes, to say nothing of those younger. than 16 who need no fishing license. The impact of this sport fishing on the economy of the state is considerable. The 1.3 million resident and non-resident anglers spend some 100 million dollars annually to catch fish (Scheftel, 1958) and the annual sportfishing catch of fish from some 2 million acres of Minnesota fishing waters has been conservatively estimated at about 25 million pounds (50 million fish) (Moyle, 1958).
