Plant Communities: Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver Aug 1965

Plant Communities: Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Thanks to our rapid increase in population ,and the largely indiscriminate spread of urban, industrial, and transport facilities, the time is not far distant when land-use capabilities must receive much more attention than they have enjoyed. Natural, that is pre-settlement, vegetation, integrating as it did the manifold factors of environment, is un-excelled as a guide to potential land use.

The Inadequacy Of Intracranial Stimulation To The Posterior Hypothalamus To Serve As A Reinforcer For Maze Learning In The Rat, John A. Bull Aug 1965

The Inadequacy Of Intracranial Stimulation To The Posterior Hypothalamus To Serve As A Reinforcer For Maze Learning In The Rat, John A. Bull

All Master's Theses

Eighteen, 23 hour food deprived, self-stimulating rats were divided into two groups. One group received 20 ICS pulses as a reward for a correct response in a T-maze while the second group received a food reward. The subjects learned for food over 5 days of 10 massed trials per day, but failed to show learning for ICS either within sessions or over days. There was no difference in learning between rats with high bar press rates and those with low rates in either group.

Manufacturing In Texas: Facts And Fancy, Tom L. Mcknight Jun 1965

Manufacturing In Texas: Facts And Fancy, Tom L. Mcknight

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Regional generalizations are common with respect to various parts of the United States, but it is about Texas that they are perpetuated in greatest profusion. In that state, it has been irreverently remarked, one can "look farther and see less" than anywhere else in the nation. This delightful generalization is but one of myriad that have been composed about our erstwhile-largest state. Indeed, the folklore and autochthonous mythology of this country would be much the sparser were it not for the congeries of cliches concocted concerning Texas.

A Longitudinal Study: The Relationship Of Various Physical Characteristics To Serum Cholesterol In Preadolescents And Adolescents, Carol Ann Milligan May 1965

A Longitudinal Study: The Relationship Of Various Physical Characteristics To Serum Cholesterol In Preadolescents And Adolescents, Carol Ann Milligan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although many theories have been formulated concerning atherosclerosis and its relationship to the incidence of coronary heart disease, few actual facts are known. It is known that atherosclerosis is very complex and appears to be influenced by many factors. It is postulated that an elevated serum cholesterol level is one predisposing factor.

Serum cholesterol levels are likewise influenced by many factors. Age, sex, body build, exercise, socio-economic levels, smoking, health status, weight loss or gain, dietary fat, endocrine function, and stress have been shown to be related to serum cholesterol levels, and according to some authors also are related to …

Statistics In The Design And Analysis Of Physiology Experiments, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson Jan 1965

Statistics In The Design And Analysis Of Physiology Experiments, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Statistics should be considered as a tool by the animal experimenter in much the same way that a chemical analysis or a radiation counter is used as a tool. Too often statistics is considered as something magical which can restore order out of chaos and perhaps absolve the experimenter from mistakes in logic and procedure. It is true of course that the statistician through his knowledge of statistical procedures can sometimes help salvage some results from an otherwise hopelessly muddled experiment. One point must be made clear at the outset—the statistician is not a tool of the experimenter although statistics …

Percina Notogramma Montuosa Hogarth, A New Subspecies Of A Percid Fish From The Upper James River, William Thomas Hogarth Jan 1965

Percina Notogramma Montuosa Hogarth, A New Subspecies Of A Percid Fish From The Upper James River, William Thomas Hogarth

Master's Theses

Percina notogramma montuosa is described from 50 specimens taken in the tributaries of the upper James River. It is best separated from Percina notogramma notogramma, which inhabits the lower James, Rappahannock, York, Potomac and Patuxent rivers, on the basis of lateral-line scales (average difference 89%) and scales around the caudal peduncle (average difference 79%). A comparison of the meristic indices resulted in an average difference of 89%. A total of 18 out of 31 meristic and proportional characters were found to give significant differences.

The relatively few specimens from the Rappahannock, Potomac and Patuxent rivers precluded an intensive investigation of …

Helping With Homework, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Although actually helping a child with homework is rarely recommended there are many ways in which parents can help young children to cope with their school work.

Some of them are outlined in this article.

Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov Jan 1965

Roles Of Hypothalamus And Hypophysis In The Control Of The Estrous Cycle, A. V. Nalbandov

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The interrelation between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland has been firmly established. It is not the intention of this report to review the literature on this extensive subject. Such reviews are available in "Advances in Neuroendocrinology" (Nalbandov, 2), and since the time of this publication many papers on this subject have appeared in current journals. For the purposes of the present discussion a few fundamental facts will be restated, but the major part of my presentation will deal with my own views of the research areas which should be of special interest to animal scientists concerned with phenomena …

The First One Hundred Books: A Brief History Of Southern Methodist University Press—1937-1964, Allen Maxwell Aug 1964

The First One Hundred Books: A Brief History Of Southern Methodist University Press—1937-1964, Allen Maxwell

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

While 1937 is considered the "founding year" of the SMU Press-it was on June 1, 1937, that Bishop John M. Moore, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, first announced the establishment of the Press, and on November 22 that the first book was published (Samuel Wood Geiser's Naturalists of the Frontier, in an edition of 755 copies)-the publishing activities of SMU, and the roots of the Press itself, reach considerably farther back. From the time the quarterly Texas Review was moved from the University of Texas to SMU and renamed the Southwest Review in 1924, a dedicated handful of forward-looking …

Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Aug 1964

Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The body of writings on the philosophy and history of geology has grown in a remarkable way since the end of the Second World War. There is no obvious explanation for this quickening of interest in what are surely the most academic aspects of a science best known for its practical applications. Influences arising both from within and from outside the geological profession have probably been responsible. It is a matter of record that many departments of geology, upon resuming full-time operations after the war, decided not to go on moving in the old curricular ruts. The new courses, even …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang Jun 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Among 6 patients who were placed on the diet during the first 5 months of life, it appears that the optimal …

Weight Reduction Problems As Shown By A Review Of Literature And A Survey Of Weight Reduction Groups, Naomi Jensen May 1964

Weight Reduction Problems As Shown By A Review Of Literature And A Survey Of Weight Reduction Groups, Naomi Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

America has been known throughout its history as a land of plenty . Enough food to feed a rapidly increasing population has been produced continuously . Scientific progress has made it possible for fewer farm workers to produce larger amounts of food both from increased acreage and increased yield per acre . With today's nationwide network of distribution , these foods have been made available throughout all sections of the country . Modern science and industry have taken over many of the processing duties of the homemaker and have done it on a less expensive and a much safer scale. …

Favorite Sons: Obsolete Presidential Candidates, James W. Davis Jan 1964

Favorite Sons: Obsolete Presidential Candidates, James W. Davis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

With the 1964 national nominating conventions slightly more than a year away, nationwide political attention will once again be focused upon the presidential sweepstakes race. Inasmuch as the party controlling the presidency, the "in-party," almost never discards an incumbent, the president is virtually assured renomination by the Democrats; consequently politicians in both parties and the American voters will be concerned chiefly with the selection of the Republican candidate.

At this juncture it is impossible, of course, to predict flatly how many of the leading Republican contenders will openly toss their hats in the ring. But it is safe to assert …

The Decision-Makers: The Power Structure Of Dallas, Carol Estes Thometz Oct 1963

The Decision-Makers: The Power Structure Of Dallas, Carol Estes Thometz

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

In every community there are persons who "run" things, who make decisions and take action in the citizens' behalf. Who are they? How do they operate? Who spots the problems and decides which will be faced and which ignored? Who diagnoses and prescribes a solution? Elected officials? The bosses of business? of labor? Individuals or groups? Organizations or private cliques? And by what open or hidden processes are decisions reached?
