The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. I. A Comparison Of Protein Concentrates From Animal And Vegetable Sources, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. The effects of adding to a basal ration, protein concentrates from animal and vegetable sources were studied by means of growth and body-analysis experiments. 2. There was a small increase in the nitrogen content of the chicks fed the animal protein concentrate, but no differences appeared between lots with respect to their content of calcium and phosphorus. 3. The percentage rate of gain and the gain per gram of nitrogen fed were greater in the lot fed the animal protein concentrate. 4. The lot fed the animal protein concentrate retained more of the nitrogen fed, but less of the …

The Types Of Sterility And Related Phenomena With Special Reference To Convallaria And Tropaeolum Majus, Mary Cecilia May 1937

The Types Of Sterility And Related Phenomena With Special Reference To Convallaria And Tropaeolum Majus, Mary Cecilia

Bachelors’ Theses

The development of superior plants through breeding is one of the chief contributions of America to agriculture. Out of old stock, scientists have developed a large number of new forms with better quality, more productiveness, and greater resistance to disease and adversity. However, the surface has hardly been scratched and possibilities reach in interest are pushing forward the experimentations necessary for success in the science field.

Crow-Waterfowl Relationships Based On Preliminary Studies On Canadian Breeding Grounds, E. R. Kalmbach Jan 1937

Crow-Waterfowl Relationships Based On Preliminary Studies On Canadian Breeding Grounds, E. R. Kalmbach

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

With the object of obtaining a current insight into the relationship of crows to waterfowl on their breeding grounds, a study was inaugurated in the spring of 1934 and continued through the nesting season of that and the following year. As originally planned, it called for field studies both in Canada and in the northern United States, but drought conditions had so drastically reduced the breeding population of ducks within our borders by the spring of 1934 that, after a futile effort to locate suitable areas in this country, plans were changed and the studies were restricted to Canadian areas …

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley Jan 1937

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Until recently the diseases of upland game birds received comparatively little specific study, except in a few outbreaks in which serious losses were observed. Though highly destructive, many of these outbreaks were of such short duration that the investigations undertaken were chiefly to learn the cause of death and usually were discontinued when losses were no longer noticeable. It has become increasingly evident, however, that every year great numbers of game birds die of disease, the decreases in their numbers frequently occurring in sections closed to hunting, even though food, cover, and other environmental conditions appear ideal. The disease problems …

Some Factors Affecting The Cooking Quality Of The Pea And Great Northern Types Of Dry Beans, Edna B. Snyder Oct 1936

Some Factors Affecting The Cooking Quality Of The Pea And Great Northern Types Of Dry Beans, Edna B. Snyder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Dry beans of the Great Northern and pea-bean type from Nebraska and several other bean-producing states were studied to determine the factors affecting the cooking quality. A standard cooking procedure with distilled water was used to disclose differences in cooking quality, and the percentage of beans too hard for table use was determined for each cooked portion. The factors studied were: soaking, including time and temperatures; storage, including time and storage conditions; age; size; place of origin; effect of chemical solutions; and the composition of the seed coat. The chemical solutions used were hydrochloric and acetic acids in different concentrations; …

The Effects Of Vitamins "A" & "D" Deficient Diets On Crayfish, Joseph Hale Aug 1936

The Effects Of Vitamins "A" & "D" Deficient Diets On Crayfish, Joseph Hale

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The literature on vitamins shows that the greater number of the studies made of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets have been confined to their efforts on the vertebrates. Only a few controlled experiments have been conducted to determine the effects of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets on the invertebrates.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of vitamin "A" and "D" deficient diets on crayfish.

The Development Of The Embryo Of Iris Missouriensis Nutt, C. Eugene Larsen May 1936

The Development Of The Embryo Of Iris Missouriensis Nutt, C. Eugene Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

There is but a single species of Iris native to Utah. This is Iris missouriensis Nutt. This plant was chosen for investigation because of its possible significance and because material of this species was readily available. The embryo of Iris missouriensis Nutt. shows some resemblance to the Lily type in its development of an irregular dividing suspensor. It also resembles the Orchid type in the usual development of sixteen cells before the dermatogen is cut off. In general development, however, the writer believes it to have an embryo sequence more similar to the Alisma type than to the dexcriptions given …

The Effect Of Variation In The Calcium-To-Phosphorus Ratio On The Utilization Of Nitrogen, Calcium, And Phosphorus By The Growing Chick, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. Three groups totaling 123 chicks were fed accurately known amounts of rations containing 0.9, 1.5, and 2.3 per cent of calcium with liberal provision of the antirachitic factor so that conditions for assimilation and deposition were favorable. 2. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of ingested nitrogen was found to be about 37 per cent, and that of phosphorus about 28 per cent in the three lots. 3. With 0.9 per cent calcium in the ration, 35 per cent of that ingested was retained; at a level of 1.5 per cent calcium, 24 per cent was …

Histological Study Of The Structure Of The Testis Of Rana Pipiens, John L. Friedl May 1936

Histological Study Of The Structure Of The Testis Of Rana Pipiens, John L. Friedl

Bachelors’ Theses

All the living organisms, be they plant or animal, act as a unit which implies that the various anatomical and physiological systems are coordinated either for the benefit of the Individual itself or for the maintenance of the species. For convenience sake, the individual is divided into a digestive,. respiratory, circulatory, nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems; but there is one system which although of some value to the individual is primarily adapted for the production of other individuals, and this is the reproductive system.

Bulletin No. 265 - Phosphorus Supplements Improve Sugar-Beet By-Product Rations For Cattle, E. J. Maynard, J. E. Greaves, H. H. Smith

UAES Bulletins

In sugar-beet producing areas of the Intermountain West and Pacific Coast beet by-products constitute a most economical source of feed for fattening livestock.

In Utah there are available each year some 144,000 tons of wet beet pulp and some 20,000 tons of beet molasses; in addition, about 6500 tons of dried molasses beet pulp are available in the form of meal or pellets.

Practically all of this livestock feed supply, with a nutritive value equivalent to approximately 41,000 tons of corn or barley, has been fed, together with alfalfa hay, to cattle or sheep for maintenance or in the production …

Factors Controlling Initial Establishment Of Western White Pine And Associated Species, Irvine T. Haig Jan 1936

Factors Controlling Initial Establishment Of Western White Pine And Associated Species, Irvine T. Haig

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

The principal object of the study was to determine the roles played by important physical factors of site, chiefly as these vary with overhead shade and hence are within the control of the silviculturist at the time of logging. No special effort was made to study the effect of biotic agents under natural conditions. Indeed, in order to insure as large a sample of seedlings as possible on which to follow losses caused by physical factors, biotic agents were discouraged wherever feasible. But as records of all mortality losses were kept by cause, some information was collected on the activity …
