Establishing A Neonatal Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (Picc) Team, Rebecca Hunt
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have a plethora of diagnoses, including prematurity and newborns with genetic, neurological, surgical, and cardiac problems. The nature of these disease processes usually precludes enteral feedings and providing the infant with appropriate nutrition and hydration is a priority. This requires central venous access and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement allows for a reliable route of administration for intravenous nutrition and medications. The purpose of this project was to develop a nurse-led neonatal PICC team to provide timely placement of PICC lines while maintaining cost-effectiveness and maintaining a minimal number of …

Introduction Of Enhanced Recovery After Cesarean Section (Erac) Protocol, Kwame Adu-Affum
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Cesarean section is one of the most performed in-patient surgeries worldwide (Wilson et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2020). Births by cesarean section have been increasing globally. Cesarean birth rate has remained above 31% in the United States, even with the consistent two percent decrease in birth rate per year (Martin et al., 2019). Illinois has also maintained a high cesarean birth rate above 30% (Hamilton et al., 2021). Cesarean patients experience inflammatory and neurohormonal changes with many adverse effects in direct response to surgical stress (Mullman et al., 2020). The post-cesarean physiological effects, including pain, reduced gastric motility, pulmonary …

Computer-Based Learning Module: Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity, Nhan Nguyen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is the result of rapid absorption of local anesthetics (LAs) into the systemic circulation resulting in toxic plasma levels of the drugs. With the advent of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia and improvements in injection techniques, the incidence of LAST has decreased significantly over the years. Even though LAST is rare, it is a potential, life-threatening complication associated with any administration of LAs. Providers and staff members taking care of patients receiving LAs should be astutely aware of potential complications so that LAST signs and symptoms can be recognized, and treatments can be implemented as swiftly as …

Resource Amount And Discontinuity Influence Flight And Reproduction In Hippodamia Convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Hannah E. Stowe, J. P. Michaud, Tania N. Kim
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Industrial-scale agriculture creates a mosaic of large monocultures in the landscape, where seasonal cropping cycles generate discontinuous resource availability for insect predators both spatially and temporally. In this environment, selection will favor predator movement and reproductive behaviors that optimize the location and effective utilization of resource (prey) pulses that are both patchy and ephemeral in nature. Using a model system to study predator movement and reproduction, we tested how discontinuous periods of food resource access that mimic fluctuating resource populations (aphids) would influence flight behavior and reproduction of a highly mobile predator, Hippodamia convergens (convergent lady beetle), and possibly modify …

Investigation Into The Comorbidities Of Disordered Eating And Social Anxiety Disorder In College Students, Alice Mccraney
Investigation Into The Comorbidities Of Disordered Eating And Social Anxiety Disorder In College Students, Alice Mccraney
Honors Theses
In recent years, psychiatrists have reported a trend that individuals with social anxiety disorders are more likely to also have disordered eating and vice versa. Research into this connection has suggested that risk factors, such as stress reactivity, negative self- esteem, perfectionism and fear of negative evaluation are potential links. This is important because understanding the correlation between the two disorders could help develop better treatments plans for people who suffer from these disorders. This study investigates the relationship between the two. A total of 257 college students between ages 18-22 completed a questionnaire using the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale …

I-want-to-go-home-so-bad. These forlorn words, expressing such homesickness, appear lengthwise within the right margin on the last page of Wilbur Wightman Gramling's pocket diary, a day-by-day journal of his experiences while imprisoned at Elmira Prisoner-of-War (POW) Camp in New York during the Civil War. Struck by a minie ball in the right arm and captured at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, Gramling, a private in Florida's 5th Infantry, spent eleven months at Elmira Prison. The journal he faithfully kept throughout his imprisonment is the only known existing document of this type written by a Florida soldier.1

Sucking, Blood, And Fire: Timucuan Healing Practices In Spanish Florida, Tamara Shircliff Spike
Florida Historical Quarterly
As a colonial holding, Spanish Florida was a provincial backwater. It was located on the periphery of empire and parsely settled. Spain spent comparatively little time and effort developing the infrastructure of the colony.1 However, it is for these very reasons that Florida reflects to a magnified degree a problem in mission fields throughout the Americas during the colonial period: how to combat disease in the mission populations while still working to extirpate Native practices seen as anti-doctrinal. Descriptions of healing rituals by Franciscan friars and other Europeans offer tremendous insight into how the Timucuans of Spanish Florida viewed their …
