The United States produces about 1.8 million tons of sugar annually. Approximately 75 per cent of this production is derived from sugar beets. The importance of the sugar beet crop in national and world economy is justification for research effort as a means to more economical production.
It is desirable that sugar beet processing be carried out in the most efficient manner. More effective utilization of the sugar beet and its by-products will add stability to the sugar beet industry.
For the past 170 years, since Achard found that sugar could be used for human consumption and that pulp might …
Red Raspberry Root Rot In Northern Utah, Robert L. Powelson
Red Raspberry Root Rot In Northern Utah, Robert L. Powelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the last few years, red raspberry growers in Utah have been finding that plantings gradually lose vigor and are not profitable. In the largest raspberry growing area in Utah, Utah County, figures taken from the U.S. census from 1930 to 1950, show a decrease in acres of raspberries grown from 401 in 1930 to 190 in 1950 (2). In many instances this deterioration of raspberry plantings in Utah has not been definitely associated with known plant pathogenic fungi or virus infections. Neither can the expansion of suburbs account for this decrease. In certain cases it has been obvious that …
Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates
Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The reciprocal effects of vegetation and soils have long been a subject of speculation and conjecture. In the management of any natural land area the problem of interpreting vegetational expression is especially important. The effects of native vegetation on soils and the effects of the soil on the vegetation have been studied and observed for many years. The arid-desert range lands have been studied least and as a result are not well understood.
As human populations increase there will be additional need for agricultural production, and these lands may be put to higher use, perhaps even to irrigated crop production. …

Observations On The Morphology, Physiology, And Life History Of Allescheria Boydii Shear, Robert Denton Flory
Master's Theses
Of those organisms upon the face of the earth displaying a wide range of variability, excellent examples may be found amoung certain groups of the fungi. This extreme variation as noted in certain fungal groups becomes even more interesting when the phenomenon of sexuality is eliminated or of rare occurrence as in many of the Fungi Imperfecti. Such extreme variations occur in Allescheria Boydii, whose historical background is as interesting as the growth of the fungus itself.
In 1909 Tarozzi (46)isolated a fungus organism as the causative agent in a Sardinian case of mycetoma. Tarozzi referred this fungus to Saccardo, …
Some Effects Of Inorganic Fluoride On Plants, Animals, And Man, Delbert A. Greenwood
Some Effects Of Inorganic Fluoride On Plants, Animals, And Man, Delbert A. Greenwood
Faculty Honor Lectures
~~~ in the compounds of fluorine may be traced to one or more of the following factors: ( 1) the consumption of a drinking water containing one part per million of fluorine as a soluble flouride during the period of calcification and eruption of the teeth causes a reduction in the incidence of tooth decay; however, an intake of drinking water containing more than two parts per million of fluorine causes dental fluorosis of varying degrees in man and certain animals; (2) a continuous intake of excessive amounts of fluorine as mineral supplement, in contaminated forage, or the grazing of …
Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller
UAES Bulletins
Pastures have been important in the agricultural economy of the Intermountain Region. But as long as nearby valley bottom or other land not well suited for cultivation was available, the pressure for better irrigated pastures remained secondary to that for improved cash crops.
Only in recent years have dairymen generally realized that a productive herd, coupled with proper management, could make a good pasture a highly profitable crop. Bateman and Packer pointed out in 1945 this concept of pastures. Bateman et al. using newer mixtures strikingly verified the concept in 1949 and 1954. The growing awareness of the value …
False Smut Of Buffalograss, John L. Weihing
False Smut Of Buffalograss, John L. Weihing
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
False smut of buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., caused by Cercospora seminalis Ell. & Ev. is a disease that destroys the unfertilized ovary. The disease was first reported by J. B. Ellis and B. M. Everhart in 1888. They gave only a brief description of the disease and named the causal fungus Cercospora seminalis. There are no etiological studies of false smut recorded in the literature. The origin of the term "false smut" is unknown to the author, but it so descriptively fits the general appearances of the disease that one readily understands its usage. The following studies were …
Bulletin No. 383 - Cooperative Nutritional Status Studies In The Western Region: I. Nutrient Intake, Ethelwyn B. Wilcox, Helen L. Gillum, Margaret M. Hard
UAES Bulletins
In 1947, a concerted study of the nutritional status of selected population groups was initiated in the western region of the United States. Previous dietary surveys had indicated that substantial portions of the country's population were consuming lower than recommended levels of essential nutrients. Deficiency diseases that may have nutritional background, such as dental caries, anemia, and rickets, existed. Investigators reported subclinical signs of malnutrition in several areas. Few studies had been made in the West, although reports of high incidence of dental caries and suspected undernutrition had come from several western states. The regional committee thought it evident that …
Bulletin No. 384 - Virus And Viruslike Diseases Of Stone Fruits In Utah: A Handbook For Their Identification And Control, B. L. Richards, L. C. Cochran
UAES Bulletins
Intensive research over the last 20 years has shown that many of the previously unexplained and seemingly mysterious disorders of stone fruit trees in Utah are infectious diseases caused by viruses. Others were shown to be the result of noninfectious genetic abnormalities or of adverse chemical and physical factors in the environment of the plant. The purpose of this handbook is to help orchardists and others recognize these diseases and disorders and understand better their etiology or cause. The handbook will also bring together basic information which will aid in their control.
Cc143 Poultry Profit Pointers: Choosing Your Baby Chicks, Elvin C. Schulte
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The successful poultryman is very careful in buying chicks, and in selecting birds for his breeding or laying flock. Well-bred stock will do quite well even when conditions are poor, but poor stock will not pay under the best conditions.
This campaign circular discusses what to look for when purchasing chicks for your farm. This includes disease-free chicks, and the types and breeds. It also discusses how many to start with, when to start, keeping records, how to feed them, and preparing the brooder house for the arrival of new chicks.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Consumers are learning that eggs are a protective food, high in nutritive value, and essential in a good diet. As a result, they are buying more eggs. At the same time, housewives are becoming more egg-quality conscious. They are demanding better eggs. It is essential, therefore, that every egg producer take particular care of the eggs he produces and markets.
This campaign circulars discusses how a producer can deliver the best quality eggs to the market. It covers housing, feeding, producing clean eggs, cleaning eggs, cooling eggs, packaging eggs, and marketing.
Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle
Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The study of bacteriology is frequently not included in the high school science curriculum and often, when it is taught, it is dealt with in only a superficial manner. There are various reasons for this. Very often high school science instructors lack training in courses relating to bacteriology and consequently, feel inadequate to handle the topic with their students. Another factor rests with the fact that bacteria are difficult to study without the aid or microscopes with high power objectives. Many high schools lack this equipment. A third factor is that some parents may feel that it may be dangerous …
Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Measurements of growth, to be meaningful, must be taken of various parts of the body, at regular intervals, under standardized environmental conditions, from birth through the growth span of the animal. From these measurements skeletal growth standards may be prepared for the several ages. Such standards can be used to measure growth at any age period. They will serve the research worker as a guide for experimental procedure and will provide the livestock raiser a basis with which his animals may be compared. Present standards of growth for dairy cattle are based mostly upon live weight, although considerable data are …
Bulletin No. 377 - Performance Testing Studies With Beef Cattle, James A. Bennett, Doyle J. Matthews
UAES Bulletins
The goal in beef cattle breeding is the production of animals that make rapid and efficient gains and have desirable conformation. Performance testing has recently been advanced as a means of identifying individuals possessing superior productive qualities and as a means of evaluating sires for transmitting these qualities to their offspring. This report gives the results of performance tests conducted with Hereford and Shorthorn calves fed over a constant time period as well as the results of a supplemental study undertaken to gain information that might add refinement to the evaluation of gains in beef cattle.
Irrigating Vegetables And Small Fruits, Martin Fogel, Lloyd Ayres
SDSU Extension Circulars
Vegetables and small fruits are grown more extensively in South Dakota than most people realize. Almost every farm has a garden where vegetables and small fruits are grown for immediate use. In every town and city, gardens of varying sizes are found. These home gardens produce a large amount of wholesome, high nutritional food. Market gardening is an important enterprise near the larger towns in South Dakota. It is a highly specialized business, though oftentime it is done on a very limited acreage. The detrimental effects of prolonged dry periods, which have caused complete failure of vegetable and small fruit …
