The Development Of A Dietary Manual For The Small Hospital, Blanche Z. Madsen
The Development Of A Dietary Manual For The Small Hospital, Blanche Z. Madsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An increased amount of emphasis is constantly being placed on the standardization of diets where group feeding is involved. Especially is this true in the hospital where food is an essential part of the medical treatment of the patient. The directing personnel responsible for the diets for any hospital situation where a dietitian is employed, are the doctors who prescribe the diet orders and the dietitian who interprets them.

Morphological, Chemical, Histological, And Sensory Quality Changes In Gamma Irradiated Carrots And Potatoes, Keith Andrew Madsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Through the ages, people have been confronted with the problem of storing food after the harvest season for consumption during the winter months. Foods have been preserved by dehydration, canning, and refrigeration. However, people usually prefer fresh vegetables become unfit for human consumption as a result of sprouting and breakdown in storage.
Some chemicals have been used with various degrees of success in preventing sprouting of certain vegetables. The chemicals were applied as a pre-harvest foliar spray or directly on the tubers or on the roots.
In 1954, a law was passed by the United States Congress authorizing the release …

Absorption Of C14 Labeled Sucrose By Nectaries, Cecil Wright Lefevre
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the early Eighteenth Century the significance of nectar secretion has been debated. Some have reasoned that it is reabsorbed into the plant and used as energy for the developing embryo while others believe it is a waste product which attracts pollinating insects.
It has been suggested (Brink and Cooper, 1947) that the nutrient supply to developing ovules is a major factor in the development of seed. Also, alfalfa fields pollinated by pollen-collecting bees produce greater seed yields than those pollinated by nectar collectors (Bohart, Nye, and Levin, 1955). It is a well-known fact that more flowers are tripped by …

The Effect Of 2 Soil Fertility Levels On 5 Potato Varieties In Relation To Yield, Specific Gravity And Chipping Quality, Gayland D. Robison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The potato enterprise is important in Utah as it provides a cash crop and also a means of diversifying and intensifying the operations on many irrigated farms. It is of particular value in the sections of the state that have a short growing season where other crops cannot feasibly be produced. The potato chip industry supplies a demand for large quantities of potatoes. The usage by this industry makes it a major factor in potato farming economy.
The making of chips originated over a hundred years ago as the result of an accident. A silver of potato fell into a …

An Evaluation Of The Salt Tolerance Of Particular Varieties, Strains, And Selections Of Three Grasses And Two Legumes, Farrel John Olsen Jr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In arid and semiarid areas in the Western United States, soluble salts tend to accumulate in the soil in amounts harmful to crop production. A considerable portion of this land cannot be reclaimed due to the poor quality of permeability of the soil. Therefore, the wise selection of crops that will produce satisfactory yields on these soils in necessary.
The salt tolerance of many crop plants has been investigated; however, more information is needed on the relative salt tolerance of varieties, strains, and selections. Such information will permit the selection and development of varieties and strains of crop plants which …
A Study Of Three Photochemical Activities Of Chloroplasts, Jimmy W. Hinkson
A Study Of Three Photochemical Activities Of Chloroplasts, Jimmy W. Hinkson
Theses and Dissertations
Chloroplasts of sugar beet leaves were subjected to treatment by heating, by incubation at pH 8.5 and pH 5.5, by incubation in ion low water, by sonic oscillation, by digestion with enzymes (lysozyme, pancreatin, and lipase), by extraction with digitonin, and by chemical compounds including 8-hydroxy-quinoline, sodium azide, zinc sulfate, phenyl mercuric acetate, potassium cyanide, 1-allylthiourea, 2,4-dinitrophenol, thymol, and p-chloromercuribenzoate. A comparative study was made of the effects of these treatments upon three photochemical reactions (the photoreduction of 2,6- dichlorophenol indophenol, the photoreduction of indigo carmine in the presence of a couple composed of 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol and ascorbic acid, and …

Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle
Utah's Future Water Problems, Wayne D. Criddle
Faculty Honor Lectures
Utah is rapidly changing from what was once predominately an agricultural state to an urban and industrial state. This shift is not decreasing our water needs; it is often intensifying these needs and creating many new problems. Perhaps we should ask ourselves-are we prepared to recognize and accept these changes? Are we really facing up to the problems that are developing or are we turning our heads and hoping they will go away? These changes involve technical, legal, and sociological problems never before encountered, some of which I should like to discuss.
Before attempting to look at Utah's water problems …

The Cattle Industry Of San Juan County, Utah, 1875-1900, Franklin D. Day
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to learn the reasons for the movement of cattle Into San Juan County, Utah, the development of the Industry, and its contribution to the growth of the county.
The few written accounts in existence of the cattle industry in San Juan are brief and found in widely separate areas. The whole and complete account will likely never be written, but there is need for gathering as much of the scattered information as possible.
A study of the early history of the inhabitants of San Juan was made, along with an examination of the geography …

Swine Production Guide For South Dakota 4-H Club Members, L. J. Kortan
Swine Production Guide For South Dakota 4-H Club Members, L. J. Kortan
SDSU Extension Circulars
Formerly there were two general types of swine: the lard type and the bacon type. Today, in general, all breeds are considered meat type and are being developed as meat hogs. The more popular breeds are: Hampshire, Berkshire, Yorkshire, Pol.and China, Chesterwhite, Durocs, Spotted Poland China, Tamworth and Landrace. Note the lifelike picture of a finished market hog on this page. An animal like this carries a high percentage of its weight in the most valuable cuts; the ham loins and bacon sides. This is the type of hog now in demand, a type to keep in mind when planning …

Meal Planning For South Dakota 4-H Girls, Jane Meyer
SDSU Extension Circulars
Cooking's fun, so let's begin! Even if you're a very young 4-H girl, you can cook. But, you must start with simple foods. As you learn more, and practice, cooking will be easier. You can then make more difficult dishes, and even plan and prepare some family meals. Let's start by learning some basic rules. You need to be neat and clean; you should always be safe; you should measure correctly; you must know how to read recipes. A good cook knows and follows these rules. You'll want to know them too!

Chemosynthetic Microorganisms In Leaching Sulfide Minerals, A. Keith Jameson
Chemosynthetic Microorganisms In Leaching Sulfide Minerals, A. Keith Jameson
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation showed that a single bacterium was capable of sulfide oxidation in exposed ore bodies. This single bacterium was isolated and characterized. It exhibited different characteristics than any previously known organism. It was found to be a chemosynthetic autotroph. An optimum nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient concentration was determined for pyrite oxidation. The nutrient contains only a source of phosphate and nitrogen. Urea was found to be a better source of nitrogen than ammonium sulfate which had previously been used. The effect of various organic compounds on the oxidation of pyrite was observed. Glucose and …

Some Supplementary Studies With Wheat Proteins, Gerald G. Porter
Some Supplementary Studies With Wheat Proteins, Gerald G. Porter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
[Abstract Not Included]
Introduction The importance of selecting only foods containing proteins of high nutritive value has been somewhat over-emphasized in the past because of the failure to recognize the possibility of supplementary relationships among proteins that are not of high quality. Hart (11) has wisely suggested that a food should not be relegated to an inferior class because its proteins, when fed alone, are not of high biological value. Sherman (31) has reminded us that with a knowledge of the nutritional chemistry of the proteins of various foods, it becomes relatively easy to utilize their supplementary relationships so that …
Combining Field Fertilizer Trials With Soil Tests In An Effort To Obtain The Most Suitable Soil Nitrogen And Phosphorous Tests For Southern Alberta, Einard Haniuk
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Under dryland farming operations, the use of fertilizers is often restricted due to limited crop response arising from limited seasonal moisture. Once this dryland area is brought under irrigation, there is increased use of fertilizers and increased demands for greater exactness in amounts of fertilizers to apply, due to efforts which are made to increase the returns from the land by introduction of new farming techniques and crops.
