Self-Replicating Technologies: Do They Exhaust Patent Rights?, Li Guo
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
This Article proceeds as follows. Part I provides relevant background on the law of patent exhaustion. Part II details the restricted sale at the Supreme Court and the conditional sale at the Federal Circuit. Part III discusses various self-replicating technologies and explains that not all self-replicating technologies are the same. Some are capable of easily reproducing an unlimited number of copies, while others may require a significant amount of resource and human intervention to replicate. Additionally, under certain circumstances, an article can be induced to make a similar, but not identical copy. An example of this is a DNA segment …

Nurse managers experience high levels of stress due to the complex bureaucratic and chaotic nature of the job, which can lead to burnout. In nurse managers, burnout negatively impacts the ability to meet the strategic goals of the quadruple aim: patient quality, patient satisfaction, cost savings, and employee well-being. Strategies to address burnout include minimizing or removing unnecessary causes of stress and provide the skills to protect against burnout. Resilience is a competency nurse leaders must have to withstand overwhelming job-related stress. Resilience-enhancing strategies have psychobiologic underpinnings and can be easily incorporated into nurse managers’ work schedules.

Purpose: Knowledge is fundamental to helping children make nutritional choices that support lifelong healthy behaviours. This study (i) investigates elementary school children’s knowledge about food and nutrition and (ii) identifies sociodemographic factors influencing children’s reported knowledge. Methods: In 2017–2019, a survey was administered to 2443 students (grades 5–8) at 60 schools across southwestern Ontario, Canada, and a parent survey was used to validate self-reported sociodemographics. Multiple regression was used to analyse children’s knowledge scores and related sociodemographic factors. A total knowledge score was calculated by summing correct responses derived from 46 individual questions in the student …

Examination Of Sedentary Behavior And Stress Levels In Undergraduate Students At Western Michigan University, Samantha Putman
Honors Theses
The intention of this research project is to provide a snapshot of current sedentary behavior and stress levels of undergraduate students at Western Michigan University (WMU). This project investigates two variables of interest in current undergraduate students at WMU to understand how much sedentary behavior and stress students are experiencing whilst pursuing their undergraduate degree. Both sedentary behavior and stress are often seen as underlying causes of multiple health issues, which is why they are variables of interest. Understanding these two variables can help the university support aspects of an undergraduate’s life affected by increased stress and sedentary behavior while …

Black men treated with frontline therapies for metastatic prostate cancer (MPC) show better clinical outcomes than non-Black men receiving similar treatments. Variations in body composition may contribute to these findings. However, preliminary data are required to support this concept. We conducted a retrospective cohort study for all men with MPC evaluated at our center over a 4-year period, collecting demographic and clinical data (N = 74). Of these, 55 men had diagnostic computed tomography images to quantify adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, specifically sarcopenia and myosteatosis. Nineteen men had repeat imaging to explore changes over time. Frequencies, medians, interquartile ranges, …
Investigation Of The Association Of Exposures To Fire-Related Hazards With Pulmonary Function Of Firefighters, David G. Goldfarb
Investigation Of The Association Of Exposures To Fire-Related Hazards With Pulmonary Function Of Firefighters, David G. Goldfarb
Dissertations and Theses
Background. Firefighters are habitually exposed to hazardous toxicants which place them at an elevated risk for numerous adverse health outcomes. An example of this is the associations observed in other works between inhalation of combustion byproducts from urban structural fires and both acute and chronic pulmonary dysfunction. To-date, the characterization of firefighters’ exposures to dangerous chemicals in smoke from non-wildfire incidents, both directly through personal monitoring and indirectly from work-related records is scarce. Prior works investigating the association between routine firefighting and pulmonary function have relied on crude metrics such as years of service and numbers of responses to …

Cultivated oat (Avena sativa L.) is an allohexaploid (AACCDD, 2n = 6x = 42) thought to have been domesticated more than 3,000 years ago while growing as a weed in wheat, emmer and barley fields in Anatolia1,2. Oat has a low carbon footprint, substantial health benefits and the potential to replace animal-based food products. However, the lack of a fully annotated reference genome has hampered efforts to deconvolute its complex evolutionary history and functional gene dynamics. Here we present a high-quality reference genome of A. sativa and close relatives of its diploid (Avena longiglumis, AA, 2n = 14) and tetraploid …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
This study sought to identify and explore the differences in participants’ Total Wellness scores with respect to race/ethnicity, gender, age, social support, spirituality, and occupational history. It was asserted that there would be observable differences in the delineated demographic research factors and that these differences would influence students’ Total Wellness as measured by the 5F-Wel Inventory. The sample was comprised of 30 graduate students enrolled in a community mental health counseling program. Hierarchal linear regression indicated that demographic variables did not predict a change in Total Wellness when controlling for pretest scores; however, pretest Total Wellness scores were significantly predictive …

Sensorial Marketing And The Ecuadorian Cuisine, Viviana Carolina Proaño Paredes, Klaes Eringa
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The last few years the Ecuadorian cuisine has become more known. One of the reasons is the diversity of the local ingredients, another the fusion of ancestral heritage with the creativity of a new generation of chefs. For this study four in-depth interviews were held with chefs of Ecuadorian haute cuisine restaurants, three in Ecuador and one in Spain. While the restaurants all value the Ecuadorian heritage, they each choose a slightly different angle for the leading concept of their restaurants, culture, history, nature, and in the case of the Spanish restaurant reviving memories and a sense of “home away …

Team Dinners: Considering Trends, Traditions, And Impacts Beyond Sport, Alana N. Seaman, Michael E. Seaman
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Team dinners persist as an enduring tradition merging sport and food. Encompassing sportsmanship, superstition, and sometimes even classically trained chefs, team dinners are enjoyed by youth and professional athletes alike worldwide. However, the role and impacts of such rituals remain poorly understood. This paper contends that team dinners represent a unique gastronomic phenomenon that has lasting effects beyond sport. Given that sport and food are often both culturally entrenched and emotionally bound, team dinners are likely influential in molding adolescence athletes’ notions of nutrition, food choice, and acceptable dining behaviors. In the U.S., pre- and post-game dinners are used as …
Cooking In The Library, Rebecca Freeman
Cooking In The Library, Rebecca Freeman
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Libraries are typically thought of as the realm of books. Historically libraries were the places that collected and housed the books of the community. For much of the history of libraries, books and the information in them were reserved for the elite. The development of public libraries enabled the general public to access these resources that were previously out of reach. In the last couple of decades public libraries in the United States have shifted from just providing access to books and online resources to additionally providing access to a wider variety of information and resources to assist the community. …

Consumer Confusion Caused By Nutrition Apps In Product Healthiness Evaluation, Mila Zečević, Petar Gidaković, Vesna Žabkar, Mateja Kos Koklič
Economic and Business Review
Rapid developments in technology and connectedness are influencing how consumers access and use nutrition information. However, this information is not always clear and consistent. The inconsistencies in the information provided to consumers can lead them to uncertainty about which data to use (i.e. consider as correct), especially when different sources of information appear similarly qualified and accurate. This paper aims to highlight the impact of inconsistent information on consumer attitudes. The results of an experiment conducted on a sample of 237 consumers indicate that the inconsistent information, when presented to consumers, influences their attitude in a way that it increases …

Torn Between Two Pandemics: Poverty Pandemic And Coronavirus Pandemic In Nigeria, Tope Shola Akinyetun
Torn Between Two Pandemics: Poverty Pandemic And Coronavirus Pandemic In Nigeria, Tope Shola Akinyetun
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
The wave of coronavirus pandemic that hit the world coincides with Nigeria’s struggles with her newly attained position as the poverty capital of the world. This paper argues that prevalent poverty is a pandemic that the world has learnt to live with, and that Nigeria is struggling to overcome. The agony of poverty in the country coupled with the coronavirus pandemic subjects the country to a quandary of a dual-pandemic scourge. The paper relies on secondary data and adopts a descriptive and analytic approach. It concludes that multidimensional poverty in Nigeria is pervasive and has become deepened by the pandemic …
Surrogacy And Parenthood: A European Saga Of Genetic Essentialism And Gender Discrimination, Mélanie Levy
Surrogacy And Parenthood: A European Saga Of Genetic Essentialism And Gender Discrimination, Mélanie Levy
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This paper tells a story of shifting normativities, from tradition to modernity and back, regarding the recognition of legal parenthood in non-traditional families created through crossborder surrogacy. The cross-border nature of the surrogacy is often forced as most domestic legal frameworks in Europe still restrict the creation of non-traditional families through assisted reproductive technologies. Once back home, these families struggle to have birth certificates recognized and establish legal parenthood. The disjuncture between social reality and domestic law creates a situation of legal limbo. In its recent case law, the European Court of Human Rights has pushed for domestic authorities to …

A Novel Electroconductive Nanofibrous Scaffold For Bone Regeneration, Mitchell Kenter
Medical Engineering Theses
The goal of this study was to develop a biodegradable and conductive scaffold to mimic the piezoelectric properties of bone and the architecture of the extracellular matrix. Poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is a conductive polymer of great interest in tissue engineering due to excellent electrical stability and biocompatibility. To enhance its conductivity, dopants such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) can be added. Engineered graphene oxide (GO) can also be introduced as oxidant to enhance conductivity and mechanical properties. PEDOT nanocomposites were synthesized by oxidative polymerization of 3, 4-Etylenedioxythiophene monomer (EDOT) in the presence of GO, DMSO, ferric chloride and various solvents. The …

U.S. Consumer Attitudes Toward Antibiotic Use In Livestock Productions, Syed Imran Ali Meerza, Sabrina Gulab, Kathleen R. Brooks, Christopher R. Gustafson, Amalia Yiannaka
Faculty Publications - Agriculture
Antimicrobial resistance, which decreases the efficacy of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, has led to concerns about the use of antibiotics in livestock production. Consumers play an important role in influencing producers’ decisions about the use of antimicrobials through their choices in the marketplace, which are driven by attitudes toward these practices. This study examines consumers’ levels of concern about (and acceptance of) the use of antibiotics in livestock production for four objectives: to treat, control, and prevent infections, and to promote growth. Results reveal that the majority of respondents were highly concerned about antibiotic use to promote growth in livestock …

Adaptive Capacity Beyond The Household: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Social-Ecological Research, Matthew A. Williamson
Adaptive Capacity Beyond The Household: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Social-Ecological Research, Matthew A. Williamson
Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations
The concept of adaptive capacity has received significant attention within social-ecological and environmental change research. Within both the resilience and vulnerability literatures specifically, adaptive capacity has emerged as a fundamental concept for assessing the ability of social-ecological systems to adapt to environmental change. Although methods and indicators used to evaluate adaptive capacity are broad, the focus of existing scholarship has predominately been at the individual- and household- levels. However, the capacities necessary for humans to adapt to global environmental change are often a function of individual and societal characteristics, as well as cumulative and emergent capacities across communities and jurisdictions. …
