Land Resource Evaluation - Ninety Mile Tank Report On Trials Conducted 1968, 1969 And 1970 By Plant Research Division And Wheat And Sheep Division, J W. Gartrell

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

In the late 1920's the seven million acres of virgin land between Hyden and Salmon Gums were considered for settlement under the "3,500 farms scheme" because it constituted "practically the only large area of wheat lands in a suitable climatic zone not then settled in Australia" (Teakle 1939). At that time the sandy scrubplain soils were more a liability than an asset because methods of profitably farming the light soils had not then been evolved. These useless scrubplains merely increased the distances between patches of' more f'ertile soils. The scheme for settlement was based mainly on the potential of' the …

Phosphoproteins Of The Cell Nucleus: Metabolism And Characterization, Lewis Joel Kleinsmith Jan 1968

Phosphoproteins Of The Cell Nucleus: Metabolism And Characterization, Lewis Joel Kleinsmith

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the chemistry and metabolism of the phosphorylated proteins which are found localized in cell nuclei. The studies focus first on phosphoprotein metabolism as it occurs in the intact nucleus under varying conditions, and then on the chemistry and enzymology of a phosphoprotein fraction which has been extracted and purified from isolated nuclei. The metabolism of phosphoproteins was studied in isolated calf thymus nuclei employing P32-orthophosphate as a tracer. These isolated nuclei incorporate this isotope into nuclear proteins, which yield phosphoserine and phosphothreonine on hydrolysis. Protein phosphorylation is energy dependent, and occurs after the …

West Midlands Development : Fertilizers For The West Midlands, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FARMING the light lands of the West Midland area would be impossible without fertilisers.

Most light land areas are inherently very low in phosphate and also require nitrogen.

The nitrogen can come from fertiliser for cereal crops, or can be built up by growing appropriate legume pasture plants such as clovers and lupins.

The History And Characteristics Of Troodos And Olympus Rose Clover, E T. Bailey, N. B. Gayfer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ROSE CLOVER is being produced and used in increasing quantities in south-western Australia. The first line named was designated Kondinin and five lines have now been given cultivar (variety) names.

One of the first samples of rose clover, C.P.I. 13949, introduced into Western Australia proved to be a mixture of two very similar types, differing visibly only in leaf markings.

The mixed sample was named Troodos,* and the selection from it, Olympus.

This paper describes the origin of the two varieties, their history and characteristics.

Trials With Urea And Anhydrous Ammonia For Wheat Growing, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE recent subsidy on nitrogenous fertilisers has greatly reduced their price to farmers. This, and farmers' increasing awareness of the benefits of application of nitrogen to cereals, has led to a substantial increase in the use of these fertilisers.

West Midlands Development : The Economics Of New Land Development, I J. Moncrieff Jan 1968

West Midlands Development : The Economics Of New Land Development, I J. Moncrieff

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE economics of new land development cannot really be separated from the financial aspects.

However, financing development is such a personal business that for general advisory purposes the distinction must be made.

For this reason, the article which follows largely avoids the financial side and is devoted to a consideration of some of the economic factors involved in the development of new land in this area.

Sources Of Nitrogen For Cereals : Their Characteristics And Costs, M G. Mason Jan 1968

Sources Of Nitrogen For Cereals : Their Characteristics And Costs, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Generally similar results may be expected from all the sources of nitrogen available for cereal growing.

The unit nitrogen price and the convenience of use of each fertiliser in the particular situation should be taken into account in deciding which fertiliser to use.

THE first point to consider when deciding which nitrogen fertiliser to use for wheat growing is the effectiveness of the nitrogen source in increasing crop yield. Second, the cost per unit of nitrogen must be considered.

The convenience of using a particular source in a particular situation is also important and greater convenience may offset some cost …

Cereal Eelworm : A New Disease Of Cereal Crops In The Geraldton Area, R J. Parkin, Olga M. Goss

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

CEREAL eelworm (Heterodera avenae) is a potentially serious disease of crops which was seen in the Geraldton area for the first time in the 1966-67 season.

It was first identified in this State at Beverley in 1958 and later near Northam in 1963.

The Geraldton region has been the only area found to be affected since.

The disease was identified on eight properties in 1966-67, and a further ten properties in 1967- 68. There are indications that many more properties could be affected in varying degrees.

It is increased in solids content with nonfat milk solids. The purpose· of developing this product was to obtain a new outlet for milk constituents; desirably it was to be one that could regain the market sales which were lost by butter and are now enjoyed by the margarines. The high price of butter compared with the substitute product …

The Feeding Value Of High Dry Matter Corn Silage, Myers J. Owens Jan 1968

The Feeding Value Of High Dry Matter Corn Silage, Myers J. Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The important of corn in dairy cattle feeding is generally acknowledged. A popular way of preserving the crop is to make corn silage, thus using the whole plant for feed and preserving maximum feed per acre. The increased utilization of corn silage by dairymen may be due to its high energy yields per acre, high acceptability by cattle, and ease with it is incorporated into automated systems of harvesting and feeding. The increasing importance of corn silage in the United State is evidenced by the increasing acreages harvested as corn silage. In 1950 there were 4,937,000 acres planted with a …

Rates Of Superphosphate For Cereal Grain Production In The Under 20 Inch Rainfall Areas, Walter Jacob Cox

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

EVERY year farmers use large quantities of superphosphate with cereal crops to overcome the inherent phosphate deficiency of West Australian soils.

The increase in the average rate used by farmers reflects the increasing amount of new land being cropped.

Good seasons and favourable economic conditions may also have influenced super rates.

Subterranean Clover Establishment In The Wheatbelt, M L. Poole Jan 1968

Subterranean Clover Establishment In The Wheatbelt, M L. Poole

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Care and attention to detail will greatly increase the chances of establishing good subterranean clover pastures in the wheatbelt.

PASTURE ESTABLISHMENT usually takes second place to cropping in the wheatbelt, with many farmers "bunging in a bit of clover" and hoping for the best. The worst often transpires, with either patchy stands or complete failure resulting.

Using "cheap" methods of establishment is a short-sighted approach and a waste of energy and resources.

Winter Beef Production Trial : Wongan Hills Research Station, D J. Barker, H. G. Cariss

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN 14-inch rainfall districts most rainfall occurs between May and October. It is d i f f i cult to keep beef animals fattening on summer dry pastures but such areas do have a ready supply of locally grown cereals.

Using these materials as the basis of a supplement it is possible to market prime baby-beef by June-July.

The higher prices obtained for this "winter" beef more than offset the cost of supplementary feed.

Fluid intakes were recorded and analyzed statistically. Individual variation was common with a generally low level of alcohol consumption when rats were fed a poor quality diet of common United States foods. The addition of caffeinated beverages and/or spices and relish caused increases …

W.A. Dairying : Progress In 42 Years, Maurice C. Cullity Jan 1968

W.A. Dairying : Progress In 42 Years, Maurice C. Cullity

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

From hardship and elementary standards, West Australian dairying has developed into a consolidated industry with larger herds, increased output and high quality production.

The changes he has seen are reviewed by Mr. M. Cullity who retired last month from the position of Chief of the Division of Dairying, after 42 years of service to the industry.

THE history of Western Australia's dairying industry has been a story of struggle against hardship, marketing problems and adverse criticism.

In spite of this the industry has steadily grown and greatly improved its efficiency.
