Pseudomonas As Causative Agents Of Fluorescence In Anguispira Kochi (Pfeiffer) Mucus, John Michael Baum
Pseudomonas As Causative Agents Of Fluorescence In Anguispira Kochi (Pfeiffer) Mucus, John Michael Baum
Masters Theses
The mucus from land snail specimens of Anguispira kochi collected from Coles and Edgar counties, Illinois, emits a blue fluorescence when exposed to ultra-violet light. Pseudomonas, a genus of bacteria which produces fluorescent pigments, has been isolated from the mucus of these snails. The object of the study was to compare the fluorescence of the mucus from individuals of A. kochi with the fluorescence of the pigments produced on a synthetic medium by pseudomonads isolated from the mucus of these snails. An effort was made to establish that Pseudomonas is the causative agent of fluorescence in the mucus of …

Six-to 8-months-old Hereford heifers categorized as grubby or grub-free calves were used for this research. Forty calves were purchased in 1968 and also in 1969. The grubby calves were obtained from Highmore, South Dakota, an area where calves have a history of heavy grub infestations of both Hypoderma bovis (L.) and Hypoderma lineatum (de Villers). The grub-free calves were purchased in Fargo, North Dakota. Calves raised in this area seldom are infested with cattle grubs. Specified groups of calves were subjected to 30 minutes of continuous exercise or the withholding of feed and water for 24 hours prior to treatment …

Antigenic Relationships In Seven Strains Of Tetrahymena, W.E. Engelhard, B.W. Mccashland
Antigenic Relationships In Seven Strains Of Tetrahymena, W.E. Engelhard, B.W. Mccashland
Papers in Microbiology
Tetrahymena, along with other genera of the family Frontoniidae, have been the subject of many scientific investigations concerning problems in protozoan physiology. Unfortunately in many instances, difficulty arises when attempting to identify properly the form that was used in the particular study. Until rather recently, relatively little had been accomplished by way of a comprehensive study of the interrelated genera, and of these very few have dealt with taxonomic problems serologically.

Activity Analysis Of Personnel On Patient Trayline Assembly, June Bishop
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The systems approach in food service administration is the initial step in analyzing current procedures to determine the effectiveness of resource utilization. Analysis begins with observation of a system to provide possible explanations of the system behavior.
The purpose of this research was to determine through work sampling the proportion of both productive and nonproductive labor time of operators on the tray assembly, the labor time and labor cost required in each position and for each meal, and to test the hypothesis that there was no significant difference between the productivity index (trays per minute) during Phase A and Phase …

Roasted Soybeans For Growing-Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal, Richard Berns
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1970
Soybeans contain about 18% fat. In the past it has been economical to process the soybeans into soybean meal. Soybean meal is the major protein supplement fed to swine. The recent development of new equipment to cook soybeans on the farm has resulted in a renewed interest in the use of cooked soybeans in swine rations. The objectives of the study reported here were to compare the performance of pigs fed whole soybean meal and to study the effects of whole soybeans on the carcasses produced.

Review Of Research Of The Value Of High Moisture Corn For Growing And Finishing Swine, L. J. Kortan
Review Of Research Of The Value Of High Moisture Corn For Growing And Finishing Swine, L. J. Kortan
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1970
Work at South Dakota State University during the 10 year period 1942-1951 with soft corn for growing-finishing pigs showed that hogs are well adapted to utilize soft corn. In all six trials during this period, pigs fed soft corn showed a lower rate of gain per day than the pigs fed hard corn. However, when the soft corn was dried and fed, the pigs made practically the same rate of gain as the pigs fed hard corn. Compared on a dry matter basis, the value of soft corn was practically equal to hard corn for growing pigs. However, the pigs …
The Effect Of Gestation Energy Levels On Reproductive Performance Of Sows And Gilts, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom
The Effect Of Gestation Energy Levels On Reproductive Performance Of Sows And Gilts, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1970
Restricting energy on total feed intake has been accepted as a desirable management pract ice for gestating sows and gilts. The advantages are reduced feed costs during gestation and larger and stronger litters resulting from more proper nutrition of the gestating sow. The common practice of reducing total feed level quite of ten reduces daily intake of energy protein and many of the other nutrients required by the sow. The experiment reported herein is an attempt to establish minimum required levels of metabolize energy for gestating sows and gilts under both summer and winter conditions. These sows will be maintained …
