Biochemical And Physiological Studies On Phytotoxicity Of Selected Pesticides And Allergens During Seed Germination Of Some Food Crops, R. R. Dalvi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Germination of mung bean, Phaseolus mungo L. , and wheat, Triticum aestivum L., seeds was used for bioassay to demonstrate the toxic effects of selected pesticides--menazon, disulfoton, and GS-14254-- and allergens-- alantolactone and usnic acid. The ability of gibberellic acid to counteract the toxic effects of these chemicals on germination and seedling growth was studied. Chemical composition of the treated and untreated seeds was made with special attention to starch and protein degradation. Effect of these toxicants on the synthesis of amylase, ATPase, and protease enzymes during germination was studied since these enzymes are synthesized de novo during germination. To …

The Development Of An Index Of Food Quality, Ann Woolley Sorenson
The Development Of An Index Of Food Quality, Ann Woolley Sorenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to develop a food quality index that can provide practical information to both consumers and professional people. The Index of Food Quality (IFQ) is a simple computerized tool based on a concept of nutrient density. The IFQ was designed to organize and clarify the present body of food composition data into a form that is directly applicable to dietary problems.
The IFQ provides a method of analyzing food quality based on energy needs. The nutrient contents of foods are compared to essential nutrient standards with calories as a common denominator. In developing the IFQ, …

Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter
Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Sheep with esophageal fistulas were used to determine the daily intake, nutritive content and digestibility of forage at three periods and two stocking intensities during the spring of 1972 on a typical foothill range in northern Utah.
Heavy grazing under a season-long regime did not influence the concentrations of dietary chemical components when compared to moderate grazing; however, it did depress the digestibility of cellulose and organic matter. There was a significant decline in the dietary chemical components due to forage maturation. Digestibility of organic matter and cellulose were significantly higher in the early spring as compared to late spring. …
Economic Feasibility Of Controlling Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) On State And Private Rangelands In Utah, Stan D. Hinckley
Economic Feasibility Of Controlling Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) On State And Private Rangelands In Utah, Stan D. Hinckley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Spraying with the chemical herbicide 2,4-D is the most widely used method of controlling big sagebrush. Spraying is very effective in increasing forage production and generally is not poisonous to either man or animals.
Two procedures can be used to calculate the internal rate of return to big sagebrush control: standard and modified discounting. Standard discounting assumes all nonuse costs are incurred in the year of treatment, and the annual income stream is constant throughout the effective life of treatment. Modified discounting correctly assumes the nonuse cost is incurred in the period of deferment, and the income stream does not …
A Study Concerning Sources Of Information And Knowledge About Fluoride In Logan, Milford, And Helper, Utah, Marilyn Lorraine Geddes
A Study Concerning Sources Of Information And Knowledge About Fluoride In Logan, Milford, And Helper, Utah, Marilyn Lorraine Geddes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A considerable amount of research has been conducted concerning the characteristics of people who are in favor of fluoridation. However, there is little information available as to what the electorate really knows about fluoride when they are forced to vote on this scientific issue.
Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the general public's level of knowledge about fluoride, to discover what sources of information have been the greatest influence on their opinion and knowledge about fluoride, and to estimate the level of participation of dentists, general practitioners, pediatricians, and gynecologists in the education of Utahns about the …
Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback
Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of the soil and plant tissues was undertaken to ascertain the effect that land irrigation with pulp mill effluent has on nutrient uptake and element balance of tree seedlings. Results show that the effluent significantly increased the sodium content of both soil and tissue; however, these levels fell far below the level necessary to become detrimental to plant life, soil chemistry and soil structure. There was evidence that the increase of elements from the effluent provided positive effects in growth and plant health. There was no evidence of sodium toxicity or calcium starvation. Evidence clearly points out the …

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen
Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Aspects of salt tolerance of Salicornia pacifica were investigated. Survival of this plant in a saline environment is due to many interacting factors. A soil pH of 7.5 to 8.0 +- 0.2 and a constant sub-surface soil moisture level of 25 to 35% are necessary for plant survival. A fluctuating lower soil moisture leevel and higher pH favor etablishment of Distichlis stricta. The ion content in S. pacifica remained constant despite increased moisture stress throughout the growing season due to accumulation of salts which were significantly higher in the surface soil layers than in the subsurface layers around the roots. …
Observations On The Distribution And Composition Of Zooplankton In Portions Of The Intracoastal Waterway, Virginia, O. Clair Hillard Jr.
Observations On The Distribution And Composition Of Zooplankton In Portions Of The Intracoastal Waterway, Virginia, O. Clair Hillard Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Five stations were established in the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, the Dismal Swamp Canal, the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal and the North Landing River. Representative samples of zooplankton were taken from October 1971 to June 1972. A. total of 57 species were identified and discussions regarding seasonal distribution in relation to physical factors and circulation are presented.
The composition of the zooplankton was found to fluctuate greatly due to the variables characteristic of the study area. The combined effect of tidal flow with freshwater input in conjunction with drainage from the Great Dismal Swamp, results in isolated populations …

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed in a forest type of the Dismal Swamp. A 0.5 ha forest stand was divided into 200 5 x 5 meter contiguous quadrats and the tree size classes were precisely mapped. Fifty soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH, and major nutrients. A topographic map was constructed with precision to 0.01 ft. Analysis of variance tests showed non-randomness to exist in soil texture and nutrient content while homogeneity tests showed non-randomness in distribution of some woody species. Factor analysis indicated no significant correlations between soil quality, topography, and woody species. Findings indicate that …
Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff
Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff
KWRRI Research Reports
Primary productivity and water quality were studied in Doe Valley Lake, a 147-hectare impoundment on Doe Run, a spring-fed stream in Meade County, Kentucky, from 13 June 1969 to 31 July 1972. Doe Valley Lake is monomictic during most winter seasons, but it is dimictic during more severe winters because of its morphometry and location on the borderline climatic region for dimictic lakes (37° N latitude). Oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion is severe, and anaerobic conditions usually prevail by late June. A hypolimnetic areal deficit of 0.038 mg/cm2/day was calculated. Supersaturation of oxygen in the epilimnion was common, …

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

G74-157 Foot Rot, Don Hudson
G74-157 Foot Rot, Don Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Foot rot (necrotic pododermatitis, foul foot) can be a very annoying problem. Once started in a herd and "seeded" in the soil, it may persist for quite a long time. Although the incidence of foot rot may not be high at any one time, it requires constant observation to prevent serious economic loss.
The bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum has been reported to cause foot rot. However, researchers have not been able to reproduce typical foot rot lesions with this organism.
Recent research at the University of Missouri indicates that a combination of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus are the predominant bacteria …

G74-170 Nitrates In Livestock Feeding (Revised July 1996), Richard J. Rasby, Bruce Anderson, Norman Schneider
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Most forages contain some nitrates. When feeds containing nitrates are consumed by ruminants, nitrates are changed in the rumen to ammonia that is then converted by bacteria in the rumen into microbial protein. Nitrates are not always toxic to animals.
This NebGuide describes signs, causes, prevention and treatment of nitrate poisoning in livestock.
