The Bactericidal Activity Of Human Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes Before And After The Ingestion Of Glucose, Carolyn Ann Corder
The Bactericidal Activity Of Human Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes Before And After The Ingestion Of Glucose, Carolyn Ann Corder
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The bactericidal test has been used to determine whether the consumption of concentrated carbohydrate affects the ability of human leukocytes to destroy bacteria. Subjects were given a dose of 100 grams of glucose. Two hours later a blood sample was drawn and incubated with Staphylococcus epidermidis for 120 minutes. There was no significant difference in the bactericidal activity of leukocytes of blood two hours following the ingestion of glucose from the bactericidal activity of fasting blood. A count done simultaneously with the bactericidal tests of the average number of single cocci engulfed per polymorphonuclear leukocyte showed a slightly lower phagocytic …

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen
High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen
Theses and Dissertations
Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.
The Effects Of Temperature On The Oocysts Of Isospora Canis, Ray Loveless
The Effects Of Temperature On The Oocysts Of Isospora Canis, Ray Loveless
Theses and Dissertations
Oocysts of Isospora canis, an important protozoan parasite of dogs, must sporulate in the external environment in order to become infective. To determine the tolerance of these oocysts to different temperatures, oocysts ware collected from freshly passed feces, cleaned, and subsequently stored in unsporulated, partially sporulated, and completely sporulated conditions at temperatures ranging from +50 C to -50 C. Observations on survival for each group were determined periodically thereafter at intervals up to 64 days. The rate of sporulation was followed at 6 hr intervals for temperatures of 20, 25, 30, and 38 C. Completely sporulated oocysts ware more resistant …

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens
Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.

Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley
Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley
Dissertations and Theses
This study consisted of several experiments designed to compare the ability of two species of fungi, Saprolegnia ferax and S. parasitica to grow on two species of fish, smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and goldfish (Carassius auratus), and to determine the criteria necessary for the development of these infections.
The results indicate that water in the fish tanks must be slightly acid (pH 6), warm (22°C), nonmoving, and that the fish must be wounded in order for fungal infection to occur. Cool water (18°C) and moving water, caused by aeration and filtration, are detrimental to fungal colony …

Physiology Of Sporeforming Bacteria Associated With Insects: Minimal Nutritional Requirements For Growth, Sporulation, And Parasporal Crystal Formation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis., Kenneth W. Nickerson, Lee A. Bulla Jr.
Physiology Of Sporeforming Bacteria Associated With Insects: Minimal Nutritional Requirements For Growth, Sporulation, And Parasporal Crystal Formation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis., Kenneth W. Nickerson, Lee A. Bulla Jr.
Papers in Microbiology
A defined medium is described in which 18 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis representing the 12 established serotypes grow, sporulate, and produce a parasporal crystal. This minimal medium contains glucose and salts supplemented with either aspartate, glutamate, or citrate. These organic acids are required and cannot be replaced by vitamin mixtures or succinate even though succinate is taken up at a rate similar to that of aspartate, glutamate, and citrate.

Physiology Of Sporeforming Bacteria Associated With Insects: Radiorespirometric Survey Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The 12 Serotypes Of Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Grant St. Julian, Lee A. Bulla Jr.
Papers in Microbiology
Radiorespirometry was used to compare the primary pathways of glucose catabolism in 18 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis representing the 12 established serotypes. Every strain utilizes the Embden-Meyerhof-Pamas pathway almost exclusively; pentose-phosphate pathway participation is minor. The Embden- Meyerhof-Parnas pathway predominates regardless of whether the cells were grown in a minimal medium or one containing yeast extract. The results indicate that the absolute requirement for citrate and related compounds is not a result of defective citrate or glucose transport and metabolism.
Carbohydrate And Organic Nitrogen Concentrations Within Range Grass Parts At Maturity, L. J. Perry Jr., Lowell E. Moser
Carbohydrate And Organic Nitrogen Concentrations Within Range Grass Parts At Maturity, L. J. Perry Jr., Lowell E. Moser
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) levels were significantly different among eight range grasses at maturity. Roots, rhizomes, and stem bases (storage organs), differed significantly in percentage TNC within rhizomatous and bunch-type (non-rhizomatous) grasses. Percent organic nitrogen differed significantly among grasses and storage organs but not to the same extent as with TNC. We of nonstructural polysaccharide accumulated (Smith, 1968; suggest that TNC concentrations of storage organs must be determined for each grass before sampling for TNC levels, in Grasses of subtropical order to locate storage organs with greatest TNC concentration.
The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins
The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
A limited number of investigations dealing with the effects of caffeine upon human physical performance have been conducted. Since caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and it is a constituent of the popularly-consumed beverages - coffee, tea, and cola drinks, it would appear that numerous studies would have been conducted in order to determine the effect of caffeine upon human muscular performance. At any rate, there is a dearth of studies on this topic and the findings of the conducted experiments are equivocal and ambiguous.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of various doses …

The Deoxythymidine Kinase-Deoxythymidylate Kinase Enzymes In Salmonella Potsdam And Escherichia Coli K12 Infected With Bacteriophage P3, James D. Kettering
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Metabolic alterations in bacterial hosts caused by virus infections have been studied for the last thirty years. The virulent T-even bacteriophages have been studied the most and have been shown to be responsible for the induction of a number of new, virus-specific enzymes that are necessary for successful phage growth. In addition, the activity of other host enzymes present prior to infection has been found to be increased by T-even infection. Temperate bacteriophages, being more difficult to work with than the virulent viruses, have not been studied as extensively. This is especially true for metabolic studies, since most temperate phage …

The Developmental Fine Structure Of Pacinian Corpuscles, Pedro B. Nava
The Developmental Fine Structure Of Pacinian Corpuscles, Pedro B. Nava
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A preliminary light microscopic study of the mouse hind limb revealed a group of about 20 Pacinian corpuscles extending from the mid-region of the fibula to the tibio-fibular fusion strategically located for the possible sensing of bone-transmitted vibration.
The fine structure of the corpuscles is described in four stages: primordial or prenatal (19 and 20 days); early differentiation (1-8 days postnatal); differentiated corpuscle (9, 10, 12, 14 and 21 days postnatal); and adult (28 days old).
The corpuscles commence development during the 19th prenatal day. The corpuscle then consists of a nerve ending surrounded by sheath-cells which appear to be …
Lesion Formation In The Liver Of Mice Caused By Metabolic By-Products Of Hymenolepsis Microstoma, Gary Simpson
Lesion Formation In The Liver Of Mice Caused By Metabolic By-Products Of Hymenolepsis Microstoma, Gary Simpson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The presence of lesions in the liver of mice is associated with the infection of these mice with the common bile duct -dwelling cestode, Hymenolepis microstoma. Lesions develop even though there is no direct contact between the cestodes and the liver. It was found in this investigation that administration to mice of Tyrode's solution, in which cestodes had been incubated for 24 hr, resulted in liver lesions comparable to those observed in normal infections. The administration of the causative substance by either per os intubation or intraperitoneal injection produced similar lesions. Further studies revealed that the active lesion - …

Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The consumption of alcohol is a problem not only in this country (U.S.), but also in many other places in the world. Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.
In an effort to establish the cause for this behavior, we put Sprague-Dawley albino rats on either a poor or good basal diet. Once every other day the rats were injected with a solution of cocaine. …

Characterization Of Selected Bacteria From The North Arm Of The Great Salt Lake, John L. Crane Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Thirteen bacterial cultures were isolated from the North arm of Great Salt Lake during the months of January and February of 1973. Eleven isolates were gram-negative pleomorphic rods which lysed in hypotonic solution. The remaining two were gram-positive cocci. All isolates and one known strain of Halobacterium salinarium were subjected to examination of morphological, cultural, physiological, and biochemical characteristics. A numerical taxonomic analysis was applied to the compiled characters to compute a coefficient of similarity for each individual isolate as compared to all other isolates. A comparative analysis was included in the similarity computation using characters assembled from those reported …
Extractable-Emulsifying Capacity Of Hand And Mechanically Deboned Mutton And Organoleptic Acceptability Of Various Mutton Salami Formulations, Jack Robert Anderson
Extractable-Emulsifying Capacity Of Hand And Mechanically Deboned Mutton And Organoleptic Acceptability Of Various Mutton Salami Formulations, Jack Robert Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Salt soluble extracts from mechanically deboned mutton were significantly higher (P < .01) in pH than the extracts from the hand boned mutton. An associated trend toward greater extractability, however, was not significant. Variation in emulsifying capacity between extracts from carcass parts were highly significant yet significant variation did not occur in the emulsifying capacity of hand versus mechanically deboned mutton. A new term, extractable- emulsifying capacity is presented which incorporates the extractability and emulsifying capacity of meat extracts into one value which should more accurately estimate the contribution of a meat ingredient in forming a stable sausage emulsion.
Salami, utilizing mutton, was formulated from experimental results which indicated that up to 10 percent mutton fat and 68 percent mutton lean was acceptable to panelists. Pork was preferred to beef for use in combination with mutton as determined by panel scores, however disagreement was noted between panelists. Panelists were unable to detect flavor, moisture or texture differences between the final mutton salami and a commercial beef and pork formulation. They did however prefer the appearance of the mutton salami (P < .05).

Effect Of Added Calcium Ions On Relative Milk-Clotting Activities Of Commercial Milk Clotting Enzymes, Nuchanart Pavenayotin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Effect of added calcium ions on the relative milk clotting activities of porcine pepsin, Mucor miehei protease, Endothia parasitica protease, and Mucor pusillus protease was compared with that of rennin. Skimmilk, maintained at pH 6. 3 with 0.000% to 0.030% added calcium chloride, was used as a substrate. The coagulation activity of Mucor pusillus protease appeared to be most sensitive to calcium ions, followed by Mucor rniehei protease, porcine pepsin, rennin, and Endothia parasitica protease. The clotting activities of Mucor pusillus protease were also more sensitive than rennin to added calcium ions in milk samples maintained at pH values of …

Manufacture Of Monterey Cheese From Preacidified Milk, Faisal O. Mohamed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Whole milk acidified to pH 5.3 with hydrochloric acid was used for the manufacture of Monterey cheese. The milk was inoculated with one and one-half percent lactic starter and set with 12.5 ml rennet per 1000 pounds of milk. Normal washing treatments resulted in cheese with moisture in excess of 44 percent. Moisture content was brought below 44 percent by using wash water at a temperature such that the water-curd-whey mixture was 35 C. The pH of cheese made by preacidification was all between 5.21 and 5.09. No acid defects were encountered. Preacidification eliminated chance of spoilage or losses caused …
Effects Of X-Ray Induced Achlorhdria On The Utilization Of Dietary Calcium And Iron From Different Salts By Rats, Reid Scott Holbrook
Effects Of X-Ray Induced Achlorhdria On The Utilization Of Dietary Calcium And Iron From Different Salts By Rats, Reid Scott Holbrook
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dietary calcium has been classified as one of the minerals frequently limiting in the American diet (FAO, 1962) . Bone demineralization has been observed as a result of calcium deficient diets (Salomon et al., 1972), partial gastrectomies (Eddy, 1971) and inadequate hormonal balance (Albright et al., 1948). Although bone demineralization, or osteoporosis, has been attributed to many factors, the interrelationship of gastric acidity and the utilization of dietary calcium may be a key to the etiology of osteoporosis.
Eighty weanling male albino rats were divided into eight groups. All animals had their stomachs exposed through a mid-line incision. Control rats …
