Wood And Wood-Based Residues In Animal Feeds, Andrew J. Baker, Merril A. Millett, Larry S. Satter
Aspen Bibliography
Cellulose is the most abundant, naturally renewable material on earth. It, and hemicellulose, make up about 70% of the dry weight of shrubs and trees. The cellulose of woody plants, however, is largely unavailable to ruminants because of the highly crystalline nature of the cellulose molecule and the existence of a lignin-carbohydrate complex. If convenient ways can be found to enhance the availability of wood cellulose to enzymatic or microbiological systems, wood residues could provide an additional renewable energy feed supply for a world that can maintain no contingency reserve of feedstuffs. It would permit utilization of the large quantities …
Cyclic Patterns Of Central Florida Sooty Mold, Bobby Ray Pohlad
Cyclic Patterns Of Central Florida Sooty Mold, Bobby Ray Pohlad
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to record seasonal variations in the epiphyllous sooty mold colonies found on citrus leaves in two central Florida citrus groves, to determine basic patterns of fungal growth throughout the year and to determine whether these general patterns are correlated with regional climatological data. The results indicated general seasonal variations in the reproductive units of five of the fungi from the colony. In the study, correlations were seen between the two Ascomycetes, Treubiomyces pulcherrimus and Trichomerium didymopanacis. They were found fruiting most abundantly during the winter and spring. Reproductive units of two asexual sooty mold species (Podoxyphium …
A Serological Survey Of Greater Orlando Human, Canine, And Feline Populations For The Presence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, John Louis Weihe
A Serological Survey Of Greater Orlando Human, Canine, And Feline Populations For The Presence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, John Louis Weihe
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Toxoplasma gondii, the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis, was first discovered in Ctenodactylus gondi, an small North African rodent, by Nicolle and Manceaux in 1908. Later the same year Splendore observed the organism in a laboratory rabbit. Human infection was first reported by Janku in 1923. Since its discovery, many investigations have shown the organism to be truly unique in the protozoan world. There appears to be only one species and only one serotype. Serologic and microscopic studies reveal Toxoplasma to have a vast host range. At least one representative of virtually every mammalian species tested harbored the parasite or showed …

Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii
Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Populations of the sympatric intertidal bivalves, Macoma secta and M. nasuta are compared as to reproductive ecology and population dynamics. Histological examination of seasonal gonadal changes indicate that both species undergo dormancy in the winter months and rapid gamete proliferation in the spring. However, the timing of spawning differs. The M. secta population synchronously spawned in August while the M. nasuta population spawned lightly in late spring and more heavily in the fall. Fecundity estimates indicate M. nasuta adds 140% of winter weight in gametes and M. secta only adds 43% of winter weight in gametes. Spat fall was detected …

Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.

A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
KWRRI Research Reports
The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw). Field studies indicate that this algicide has tremendous potential as …
The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu
The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.
Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …
An Estuarine Low Temperature Fish Kill In Mississippi, With Remarks On Restricted Necropsies, Robin M. Overstreet
An Estuarine Low Temperature Fish Kill In Mississippi, With Remarks On Restricted Necropsies, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In January 1973, large numbers of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet), weighing approximately 250 gm each, died in two freshwater localities in tidewater bayous of Jackson County, Mississippi. Fish identified as Mugil curema, M. cephalus, Megalops atlantica, Dormitator maculatus, and Fundulus grandis were found dead in other low saline estuarine areas. Fish-kills during cold periods are less commonly encountered in Mississippi than in Texas or Florida. This particular incident is attributed to conditions of stress for fishes incompletely acclimated to the encountered low temperatures. The most deleterious stress was the low saline water which probably allowed a breakdown in the …
Food, Nutrition, And Health, Problems And Prospects, D. K. Salunkhe
Food, Nutrition, And Health, Problems And Prospects, D. K. Salunkhe
Faculty Honor Lectures
Food, nutrition, and health - and their complex interrelationships - are necessities of life. Basically, nutrition depends on food; health depends on nutrition. Everyone needs to have enough good quality food to sustain himself. Satisfying that need on a world basis must be of concern to each of us.
Although accurate data are lacking, it is estimated that more than two-thirds of today's world population is afflicted by hunger and/ or malnutrition. Almost 300 million children are suffering physical and, probably, mental damage because of insufficient food. This evidence points to one of two conclusions: we have either too many …

Surgical Treatment Of Chronic Pancreatitis, Carlos Grodsinsky
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Over a two-year period, 30 patients with chronic pancreatitis have been observed by the author. Thirteen had surgical treatment. Three had laparotomy and drainage only when recurrence of acute inflammation was encountered. One had excision of a cyst of the tail of the pancreas. Another had drainage of a retroperitoneal necrotic collection. A patient with duodenal stenosis from scarring of the head of the pancreas was treated by gastro-jejunostomy. Seven patients had subtotal pancreatectomies. There was no mortality in the latter group, and six are asymptomatic. Information about the duct may be obtained in many cases by endoscopic retrograde cannulation, …
A Study Of Rna Bacteriophage 7s Infection Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Deanne Benson
A Study Of Rna Bacteriophage 7s Infection Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Deanne Benson
Dissertations and Theses
A study was conducted to find the effect of magnesium, calcium, manganese and zinc ions on the infection of Psudomonas aeruginosa strain 1C by RNA bacteriophage 7s. When an 18 hour progeny experiment was performed, it was found that magnesium, calcium and manganese had different effects on bacteriophage production and was dependent on the bacterial growth conditions. RNA bacteriophage 7s progeny production was significantly enhanced by the addition of magnesium to cultures of Psudomonas aeruginosa 1C grown in a magnesium deficient medium. Under these environmental conditions there was a slight increase in progeny in the presence of calcium. When Psudomonas …

Enzyme Reactions Using Ureidosuccinate As A Substrate During Pyrimidine Biosynthesis And Degradation In Cl. Oroticum, Penny Amy
Dissertations and Theses
Cells of Clostridium oroticum, an anaerobic bacterium, were grown on orotate as a carbon and energy source. Ureidosuccinase, an inducible enzyme in the pathway for pyrimidine degradation has been shown to convert ureidosuccinate to aspartate, CO2 and NH3 as reported by Liebenmm and Kornberg (7). Aspartate and CO2 were formed in approximately a 1:1 ratio from ureidosuccinase activity.
Ureidosuccinase was found to be a Mn+2 requiring enzyme with a pH optimum of approximately pH 6.5. Enzyme activity is labile to O2, temperature, pH, dilution and high ionic strength. The optimum conditions for storage …
