Awassi Fat Tails : A Chance For Premium Exports, Fiona Sunderman, Michael Johns Jan 1994

Awassi Fat Tails : A Chance For Premium Exports, Fiona Sunderman, Michael Johns

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Most prople have heard of the Awassi, even if they have never seen one. This unique breed of fat tail sheep, imported into Astralia in 1987, was released from quarantine for commercial development nearly 12 months ago. Its supporters believe Awassis could form the basis of a high-value export industry while replacing imports. Developments over the next few years will test its potential and should result in the Awassi playing an important role in an increasingly diversified Australian farming scene.

Soybean Residual Effects On A Subsequent Maize Crop, E. S. Escuro, D. N. Sundberg, R. M. Shibles Jan 1994

Soybean Residual Effects On A Subsequent Maize Crop, E. S. Escuro, D. N. Sundberg, R. M. Shibles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Maize (Zea mays 1.) grown after soybean (Glycine max 1. Merr.) consistently performs better than maize that follows itself (second year maize), irrespective of nitrogen fertilization. In previous studies of the soybean-maize rotation, there never has been an evaluation of the potentially different effects of soybean genotypes on following maize. A two-year, soybean maize rotation was initiated in Ames at 1988 with the first year planted to various soybean genotypes, a maize hybrid, and oat (Avena sativa 1.). These were followed in the second year by a single maize hybrid with 0, 80, 160, and 240 kg/ha N fertilization levels. …

Comparative Evaluation Of Commercially Grown Lupin And Mung Sprouts, Sant B. Kaur Jan 1994

Comparative Evaluation Of Commercially Grown Lupin And Mung Sprouts, Sant B. Kaur

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

More than one million tonnes of lupin seed are produced per annum in Western Australia. Lupin can be considered as an alternative to staple pulse food items such as soybeans, peas, chick peas and mung beans. This research was designed to provide potential investors with objective scientifically obtained evidence of the feasibility, and marketing potential, of using lupin as a basis for the commercial development of value added foods, in this case commercially grown lupin sprouts. Sprouts were selected because sprouted lupins are comparable with mung bean sprouts, the market leader, as regards yield and consumer acceptance as a food …

Zooplankton Community Structure As A Function Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors Prior To A Multiphased Restoration Effort, John H. Ensign Jr.

Masters Theses

Lake Taylorville, an impoundment on the South Fork of the Sangamon River, is located just south of Taylorville in Christian County, Illinois. The tributaries of this reservoir drain primarily agricultural areas and contribute to degradation of the reservoir through excessive sediment and nutrient loading. A restoration project is underway which involves construction of sediment basins and dry dams. Analysis of the crustacean zooplankton community has formed an integral part of an intensive limnological investigation of the reservoir during the initial stages of the restoration effort. Seasonal variation in the composition, and density of the major groups was observed. Rotifers (Brachionus …

Amelioration Of Subsurface Acidity In Sandy Soils In Low Rainfall Regions. Ii. Changes To Soil Solution Composition Following The Surface Application Of Gypsum And Lime, C. D. A. Mclay, G. S.P. Ritchie, W. M. Porter, A. Cruse Jan 1994

Amelioration Of Subsurface Acidity In Sandy Soils In Low Rainfall Regions. Ii. Changes To Soil Solution Composition Following The Surface Application Of Gypsum And Lime, C. D. A. Mclay, G. S.P. Ritchie, W. M. Porter, A. Cruse

Food Science and Nutrition

Two field trials were sampled to investigate the changes to soil solution chemical properties of a yellow sand plain soil with an acidic subsoil following the application of gypsum and lime to the soil surface in 1989. The soils were sandy textured and located in a region of low annual rainfall (300-350 mm). Soil was sampled annually to a depth of 1 m and changes in soil solution composition were estimated by extraction of the soil with 0.005 M KCl.
Gypsum leaching caused calcium (Ca), sulfate (SO4) and the ionic strength to increase substantially in both topsoil and …

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch Jan 1994

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's consumers are demanding food products that are "low-fat", "reduced fat", "high in -unsaturated fatty acids", and "low cholesterol". This trend in food product selection is at the advice of many health professionals. Current health recommendations are to lower the dietary intake of fat, especially saturated fat. In 1992, total dairy sales accounted for over 10% of total food sales (Milk Industry Foundation, 1993). Since dairy products are perceived as being hypercholesterolemic, a market exists for dairy products which are "lower in fat" and/or "lower in saturated fat". It is said that "consumer perception is marketing reality", and because of …

The workshop was initiated by Dr. Ralph A. Bram, USDA National Program Leader, and organized by Drs. Gustav D. Thomas, USDA-ARS, Lincoln, and John B. Campbell, University of Nebraska, North Platte. Participants were charged with assessing the current status of IPM programs for pests of veterinary importance, identifying needs for program improvements, and recommending future research and extension priorities. Participants, invited from federal and state government research and extension organizations, and the …

Goats - Nutrition And Feeding, Andrew C. Dunlop Jan 1994

Goats - Nutrition And Feeding, Andrew C. Dunlop

Bulletins 4000 -

The nutritional needs of goats are similar to those of sheep. They both require energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and water to survive and be productive. For optimum performance these nutrients should be supplied constantly and in relatively fixed proportions. An excess of protein, vitamins or minerals will not make up for a shortfall in energy, nor will a shortfall in protein, vitamins or minerals be made up by an excess of energy. Goats' nutrient requirements depend on their size, whether the goat is pregnant, lactating, growing or just maintaining body functions.

Fatty Acid Pattern Differences Among Individuals Of Two Estuarine Fishes (Leiostomus Xanthurus And Mugil Cephalus), Julia S. Lytle, Thomas F. Lytle Jan 1994

Fatty Acid Pattern Differences Among Individuals Of Two Estuarine Fishes (Leiostomus Xanthurus And Mugil Cephalus), Julia S. Lytle, Thomas F. Lytle

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Ten individual fish of two estuarine species, spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) and striped mullet (Mugil cephalus), were analyzed for fatty acids. Fish of similar size were obtained from a single collection to minimize variability due to age, size, location and season. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of each fatty acid provided statistically similar groups for each acid that existed among individual fish. Fatty acids in the striped mullet provided a greater number of statistically similar groups than those in spot, indicating greater variability among individual striped mullet, which probably reflected a greater diversity in the feeding regime for …

Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin Jan 1994

Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin

Open Access Master's Theses

I studied the only known nesting population of diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) in Rhode Island at Nockum Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, Barrington, Bristol County and characterized aspects of the nesting behavior and ecology of this population, described nest site habitat characteristics and factors affecting nest success, and compared my findings to other described Malaclemys populations. A total of 241 nests was found at Nockum Hill in 1993. Terrapins tended to nest in the morning and near the time of high tide. Mammalian predators, primarily raccoons, destroyed 75 of 86 monitored nests. Fifty-five percent of the surviving clutches were oviposited …

Detection Of Trypanosome Infections In The Saliva Of Tsetse Flies And Buffy-Coat Samples From Antigenaemic But Aparasitaemic Cattle, P. A.O. Majiwa, R. Thatthi, S. K. Moloo, J. H.P. Nyeko Jan 1994

Detection Of Trypanosome Infections In The Saliva Of Tsetse Flies And Buffy-Coat Samples From Antigenaemic But Aparasitaemic Cattle, P. A.O. Majiwa, R. Thatthi, S. K. Moloo, J. H.P. Nyeko

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Relatively simple protocols employing non-radioactive DNA probes have been used for the detection of African trypano-somes in the blood of mammalian hosts and the saliva of live tsetse flies. In combination with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the protocols revealed trypanosomes in buffy-coat samples from antigenaemic but aparasitaemic cattle and in the saliva of live, infected tsetse flies. Furthermore, the protocols were used to demonstrate concurrent natural infections of single tsetse flies with different species of African trypanosomes. © 1994, Cambridge University Press.
