The Contribution Of Meats To Energy And Essential Nutrient Intakes Of Women In The United States, C. Dian Martin
The Contribution Of Meats To Energy And Essential Nutrient Intakes Of Women In The United States, C. Dian Martin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study used the 1987-88 USDA Nationwide Food Consumption Survey to investigate the contribution meat products make to intakes of nutrients at risk of inadequate or excessive consumption by women. The study is unique in that meat nutrients were extracted from mixed dishes, providing a more accurate picture of consumption. Cluster analysis was used to classify nonpregnant, nonlactating women 19 years and older based on their consumption patterns of total meat and individual meats (beef, poultry, processed meats, pork and seafoods) as percent of caloric intake.
Total fat and SFA intakes exceeded National Research Council (NRC) goals regardless of meat …
Transcervical Versus Laparoscopic Insemination In Nulliparous And Multiparous Ewes After Estradiol Cypionate Treatment, Tami L. Gage
Transcervical Versus Laparoscopic Insemination In Nulliparous And Multiparous Ewes After Estradiol Cypionate Treatment, Tami L. Gage
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The only practical method for artificially breeding ewes with frozen semen is laparoscopic insemination into the lumen of the uterine horn. Like all surgical procedures, however, laparoscopic artificial inseminatiom has limitations. The procedure requires surgical skill and costly equipment. Repeated passage of the laparoscope through the abdominal wall causes adhesions. Depositing frozen/thawed semen at the os cervix results in low conception rates. The inability to pass an insemination pipette through the cervix has prevented artificial insemination in sheep from becoming a standard breeding method as in the cattle industry. This study compared laparoscopic and transcervical methods of insemination in nulliparous …
Molecular Toxicology Of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Hea-Young Kim
Molecular Toxicology Of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Hea-Young Kim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are cytotoxic, carcinogenic, and anti-carcinogenic in vivo and in vitro, and they produce many hazardous effects in humans and animals. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) also cross-link with DNA and/or protein. However, whether such cross-linking is important to the toxic action of PAs is not known. In addition, the exact mechanism underlying these DNA cross-links or cytotoxicity is also not clear.
In three separate studies, I characterized the nature of PA-induced DNA cross-links and the relationships between PA structures and cross-linking potency. In the first study (Chapter II), I found that cross-linking potency of PA congeners coincided with their …
Influences Of Nitrogen Supply And Elevated Co2 On Nitrogen Consumption, Nitrogen Loss, Tissue Nitrogen Concentration, And Yield Of Hydroponic Wheat, Karl B. Ritchie
Influences Of Nitrogen Supply And Elevated Co2 On Nitrogen Consumption, Nitrogen Loss, Tissue Nitrogen Concentration, And Yield Of Hydroponic Wheat, Karl B. Ritchie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wheat was grown hydroponically for 23 days (early boot stage) in a controlled environment at NO3- concentrations of 100 and 1000 μmol and CO2 levels of 360 and 1200 μmol mo1-1. Nitrogen consumption and transpiration were measured daily. Tissue nitrogen concentration, total biomass, and percent root mass were measured at harvest. Nitrogen recovery and nitrogen use efficiency were calculated. Elevated CO2 increased nitrogen consumption of the 100 μmol NO3- treatment by 13.6% and the 1000 μmol NO3- treatment by 21.3%. These increases were particularly evident during …

Objectives were twofold: 1 ) to determine the chronology of development of dominant ovarian follicles during the peripubertal period in heifers and 2) to determine whether feeding a diet with low energy content that delays onset of puberty alters chronology of dominant ovarian follicular development in peripubertal heifers. Ten heifers of composite breeding ( 1/4 Angus, 1/4 Hereford, 1/4 Red Poll, 1/4 Pinzgauer) were randomly assigned, at 8 mo of age, to receive a diet designed to produce 0.9 (n = 5) or 0.3 (n = 5) kg body weight gain per day for the duration of the experiment. Analysis Of Competition In Soil Among 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid-Degrading Bacteria, J. O. Ka, William E. Holben, James M. Tiedje
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Competition among indigenous and inoculated 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)-degrading bacteria was studied in a native Kansas prairie soil following 2,4-D additions. The soil was inoculated with four different 2,4-D-degrading strains at densities of 10(3) cells per g of soil; the organisms used were Pseudomonas cepacia DBO1(pJP4) and three Michigan soil isolates, strain 745, Sphingomonas paucimobilis 1443, and Pseudomonas pickettii 712. Following 2,4-D additions, total soil DNA was extracted and analyzed on Southern blots by using a tfdA gene probe which detected three of the strains and another probe that detected the fourth strain, S. paucimobilis 1443, which belongs to a different …

Molecular Analysis Of Ovary Specific Cdnas From Galleria Mellonella, Veeraramini S. Rajaratnam
Molecular Analysis Of Ovary Specific Cdnas From Galleria Mellonella, Veeraramini S. Rajaratnam
Dissertations (1934 -)
To study the regulation of sex-specific gene expression during oogenesis, a vitellogenic ovariole cDNA library was constructed and differentially screened with ovary and male pharate pupal total cDNAs. Six classes of ovary specific clones were isolated. Clones, F11, F20 and N23 represent 1.1, 2.0 and 2.3 kb ovary specific transcripts. In situ hybridization and developmental Northern analysis showed that F11 and F20 transcripts are limited to vitellogenic follicle cells. N23 transcripts are present in the pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic nurse cells, and they persist in choriogenic follicles and early embryos suggesting that N23 may represent a maternal message. The 0.95 kb …

Biosystematics And Diversification In The Genus Striga Lour. (Scrophulariaceae) In Africa, Kamal-Eldin Ibrahim Mohamed
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Of the 34 taxa of Striga (29 species) that occur in Africa, 25 are endemic. Species diversity differs from region to region. The subtropical zone has 74% of the taxa including 41% endemics. Within this region, the West African part (from Senegal to eastern Nigeria) has 62% of the total taxa including 24% endemics. South of the equator the number of taxa is 56% of the total with 21% endemics, a proportion slightly less than that for West Africa. I recognize 29 species based on extensive herbarium and field studies. A new species from Angola is described. Striga yemenica previously …

The Relationship Between Creep Feeding Behavior Of Piglets And Adaptation To Weaning: Effect Of Diet Quality, David Fraser, J. J.R. Feddes, E. A. Pajor
The Relationship Between Creep Feeding Behavior Of Piglets And Adaptation To Weaning: Effect Of Diet Quality, David Fraser, J. J.R. Feddes, E. A. Pajor
Feeding Behavior Collection
Individual variation in creep feed intake and its relation to adaptation to weaning were studied in piglets weaned at 4 wk of age. The animals received either a "low-complexity" creep-starter diet based on corn, barley and soybean meal (12 litters), or a "high-complexity", medicated, commercial diet without soybean meal (12 litters). Diets were fed as creep feed during the 2 wk before weaning, and as the sole diet during the 2 wk after weaning. Creep feeding behavior of piglets was monitored by video recording. Pigs fed the high-complexity diet consumed more creep feed (P < 0.05), tended to gain more during the week before weaning (P < 0.10), and converted feed more efficiently and gained more weight in the 2 wk after weaning (P < 0.01). Use of creep feed varied greatly among individual littermates. Multiple regression analysis showed that on the high-complexity diet, pigs that used creep feed more than their littermates tended to be those with low gains in weeks 1-3 after birth (P < 0.001), and tended to gain more weight during the week before and during the 2 wk after weaning (P < 0.01). The trends were consistent but weaker with the low-complexity diet. However, predictive power was low, with creep feeding accounting for only 4% of individual variation in post-weaning gain on the high-complexity diet and 1% on the low. Regardless of diet quality, therefore, creep feeding remained highly variable and only weakly related to weight gains during the 2 wk after weaning.
A Physical Map Of The Klebsiella Pneumoniae M5a1 Genome, Alexandrine Randriamahefa
A Physical Map Of The Klebsiella Pneumoniae M5a1 Genome, Alexandrine Randriamahefa
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Klebsiella pneumoniae is an enteric opportunistic pathogen which commonly causes pulmonary, urinary tract and kidney infections. It has also been widely used for the study of nitrogen fixation. In this study, a macrorestriction map of K. pneumoniae M5a1 chromosomal DNA was constructed using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and Southern hybridization techniques. The genome DNA was digested with two rare cutting restriction enzymes (XbaI and BlnI) and the genome size was estimated from the sum of the fragment sizes as 5,121 Kb (+2.8%). A tentative order of fragments was deduced using Southern hybridization with purified restriction fragments. …

Miscellaneous Publication 10/94 - The Climate And Soils Of South-Western Australia In Relation To Vine Growing, J. S. Gladstones
Viticulture research reports
The vine industry in Western Australia is at present located mainly in the Swan Valley, some 15 miles inland from Perth. It produces currants for export, wine grapes, and table grapes for both local and export markets, in approximately that order of importance.
Climatically, the Swan Valley is well suited to vine fruit production. With an annual rainfall of about 34 inches, it has a mild, wet, almost frost-free winter, and a warm, dry summer. Olmo (1956) concluded that the Swan was especially well suited to the production of currants, table grapes and sweet dessert wines. However, he considered that …

Producing Quality Alfalfa Hay, Jimmy C. Henning, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Hay is one of the most versatile of stored forages in that (1) it can be kept for long periods of time with little loss of nutrients if protected from weather; (2) a large number of crops can be successfully used for hay production; (3) it can be produced and fed in small or large amounts; (4) it can be harvested, stored and fed by hand or the production and feeding can be completely mechanized; and (5) hay can supply most nutrients needed by many classes of livestock. Hay is, therefore, the most commonly used stored feed on most farms. …

Use Of Ultrasound In Reproductive Management Of Beef Cow Herds, Douglas D. Zalesky
South Dakota Beef Report, 1994
The use of ultrasound technology in reproductive management of beef cow herds is currently being evaluated in ongoing projects with cooperator herds in South Dakota. The projects include the use of ultrasound for the purposes of evaluating 1) cycling activity of heifers on estrous synchronization programs immediately prior to breeding and 2) early pregnancy detection and aging of fetuses in heifers and mature cows. Information obtained from these images will be used by producers to make management decisions associated with the breeding season, selection of heifers, and nutrition. Ovaries are evaluated for the presence of follicles and a corpus luteum, …
