Getting Through The Door: Threshold Procedural Considerations In Right-To-Die Litigation, Sharon F. Dipaolo Jan 1995

Getting Through The Door: Threshold Procedural Considerations In Right-To-Die Litigation, Sharon F. Dipaolo

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Ms. DiPaolo explains how judges may use mootness, ripeness and standing to avoid getting involved in right-to-die cases. She argues that this may interfere with private decision making and be counterproductive.

Ec95-817 Nebraska Agricultural Producers Preferences For National Agriculture, And Food Policy After 1995, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Glenn A. Helmers, Steven L. Elmore Jan 1995

Ec95-817 Nebraska Agricultural Producers Preferences For National Agriculture, And Food Policy After 1995, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Glenn A. Helmers, Steven L. Elmore

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Farmers' preferences are important in the development of farm bills. In that spirit, the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service recently asked a random sample of agricultural producers about their preferences for the 1995 farm bill. Similar surveys were undertaken in 1984 and 1989, prior to the last two farm bills. Each Nebraska survey was part of a larger, national effort. This year, 15 states, scattered across all regions of the United States, participated.

The purpose of this report is to summarize Nebraska producers' views on key issues likely to be …

Ec95-1249 Potato Production Stages: Scheduling Key Practices, Alexander D. Pavlista Jan 1995

Ec95-1249 Potato Production Stages: Scheduling Key Practices, Alexander D. Pavlista

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Characterization of potato growth and development is important for the scheduling of production practices, yield prediction and hail loss insurance. Most past descriptions emphasize above-ground vine growth, and neglect below-ground tubers. Recently, growth stages have been described integrating both practices to them. This circular describes stages of potato production and indicates key practices at each stage.

G95-1256 Managing Dairy Cattle For Cow Comfort And Maximum Intake, Rick J. Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown Jan 1995

G95-1256 Managing Dairy Cattle For Cow Comfort And Maximum Intake, Rick J. Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes housing, milking, and feeding systems that promote cow comfort, maximum feed intake, and profitability.

The goal of every dairy producer should be to provide housing and milking environments that promote cow comfort, milk production, and herd health. Feeding systems and strategies should maximize feed intake and ensure proper body condition. Cow movement to and from the parlor should be gentle and considerate.

Cow comfort can make a difference of several thousand pounds of rolling herd average milk production between two herds with similar genetics and rations. The successful producer will create a cow environment that minimizes stress, …

G95-1271 Mastitis Is A Disease -- Control Is An Everyday Task, Gerald R. Bodman, Duane N. Rice Jan 1995

G95-1271 Mastitis Is A Disease -- Control Is An Everyday Task, Gerald R. Bodman, Duane N. Rice

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A comprehensive mastitis control program will effectively control infections caused by both environmental and contagious pathogens.

Herd mastitis problems can be caused by both environmental and contagious pathogens (disease-causing organisms). These problems may occur separately or simultaneously. Various testing techniques are necessary to determine the type of causative organism and the infection level of the herd or individual cow. Appropriate tests include the CMT (California Mastitis Test), milk market somatic cell count (SCC), Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) SCC and laboratory cultures of milk from infected cows. Depending upon test results, mastitis control strategies may need to be changed to …

Soluble Aluminium In Acidic Soils: Principles And Practicalities, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1995

Soluble Aluminium In Acidic Soils: Principles And Practicalities, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Our ability to predict toxic quantities of aluminium (Al) in acidic soils is limited by our understanding of the interactions between different solid forms of Al in solution and our lack of knowledge of which form control soluble Al. This review briefly considers each type of solid form of Al, particularly from a kinetic point of view and discusses models that have been developed to predict release of Al from individual forms. More comprehensive models (i.e. more than one source or sink of Al) are then discussed as well as the interactions between different solid sources of Al.

Intsormil Annual Report 1994, John M. Yohe, Joan Frederick, Dorothy Stoner

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

USAID conducted an overall evaluation of the Collaborative Research Support Programs (CRSPs), including lNTSORMIL, between May and July 1994. According to the "CRSP Evaluation Scope of Work" developed by USAID, the goal of this evaluation was to provide an objective assessment of the degree to which each of the CRSPs has had an impact on increasing agricultural production and development, and improving natural resource management through the development and dissemination of new and/or more appropriate sustainable agriculture technologies. The evaluation also assessed the extent to which the CRSP framework has responded to past Agency expectations and objectives and if the …

Science, Values And Animal Welfare: Exploring The ‘Inextricable Connection’, D. Fraser Jan 1995

Science, Values And Animal Welfare: Exploring The ‘Inextricable Connection’, D. Fraser

Animal Welfare Collection

In conceptualizing animal welfare, it is useful to distinguish among three types of concepts. 'Type l' are single, measurable attributes. 'Type 2' are single attributes that cannot be measured directly but can be estimated by correctly combining various contributing attributes. 'Type 3' are concepts involving multiple attributes which are grouped together because they serve some common function, and whose relative importance cannot be established in an entirely objective way. Individuals who treat animal welfare as a type 1 concept may propose single, objective measures of welfare, such as longevity or levels of stress-related hormones; however, this approach rests on judgements, …

Calling By Domestic Piglets: Reliable Signals Of Need?, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser Jan 1995

Calling By Domestic Piglets: Reliable Signals Of Need?, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser

Communication Skills Collection

Two manipulations were performed on domestic piglets to determine whether differences in calling during periods of separation from the mother can indicate differences in need. In both cases, the aim was to manipulate the piglet's need for the sow's attention. In the first manipulation a 'thriving' piglet (i.e. the piglet with the heaviest weight and most rapid weight gain) and a 'non-thriving' one (lightest and slowest weight gain) were selected from each of 15 litters. The two piglets were removed from the sow and litter and recorded for 13 min in separate isolated enclosures. For the second manipulation, two piglets …

Animal Well-Being In Zoos, Conservation Centers And In-Situ Conservation Programs, John Lukas Jan 1995

Animal Well-Being In Zoos, Conservation Centers And In-Situ Conservation Programs, John Lukas

Zoo and Aquarium Animal Populations Collection

Well-being, as defined in reference to one's welfare, is the condition of happiness, prosperity and good health. In dealing with an animal's well-being, there are two frames of reference to consider. First, biological well-being which encompasses the spacial, social, nutritional, behavioral and reproductive needs of a species. Secondly, cultural well-being of animals concentrating on their perception of happiness, cleanliness, safety and the way the animals are treated by the people who care for them.

In this paper, we are not addressing freedom as a condition of well-being, only happiness, prosperity and good health. Free-ranging wild animals are not free but …
