Sustainable Roots: The Environmental Genealogies Of Chicanas And Latinas, Marlene Andrade
Sustainable Roots: The Environmental Genealogies Of Chicanas And Latinas, Marlene Andrade
Master's Theses
Ingenuity and tending to the land are anything but contemporary to Communities of Color (COC). Even when our communities become targets of environmental racism and experience the brunt of institution-based degradation, COC resist in a multitude of ways. While there is a plethora of documented social movements led by the Chicanx community for civil, educational, and labor rights, there is a paucity of Chicanx presence in environmental discourse. Thus, my scholar-activist commitments are to highlight Chicana/Latina herstories, epistemologies, and praxes that debunk the narrow white-heteropatriarchal male narrative in mainstream environmentalism. This dominant narrative fails to: (a) address the historical and …

The Inverse Association Between Prebiotic Consumption And Depression Status In American Adult Females, But Not The Greater Population Or In Males: Nhanes 2015-2018, Cassandra L. Boyd
Master's Theses
It is unknown if a relationship exists between prebiotic intake and depression status. Using 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles data, adult American estimated mean daily prebiotic intake across demographic groups, gender, and depression status were reported. Additionally, the 10 highest prebiotic content Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies foods were identified. Adults (≥ 18 years) with adequate sleep and at least one day of dietary recall data were included. Participants with excessive alcohol intake, BMI ≤ 18, BMI ≥ 30, or current depression medication use were excluded. The confounding variables were inadequate sleep, unemployment, and age. …
Tree Removal From An Encroached Coastal Grassland Restores Soil Bacterial Communities Before Fungal Communities, Ka Ki Law
Master's Theses
Woody species encroachment depletes historic grassland biodiversity and degrades ecosystem function around the world. In particular, the encroaching trees can shift soil properties and microbial communities, which play critical roles in plant health and global nutrient cycling. Little is known about how removing encroached trees affects soil ecosystems, however. Over the last century, Pinus radiata and Hesperocyparis macrocarpa (non-native to the area) both encroached into coastal prairies at Rancho Corral de Tierra in California, and selected trees were removed in 2017 and 2018 to restore grassland habitats. To examine the impacts of encroachment and removal on the soil ecosystem, I …
Effects Of Hypoxia On Anti-Predator Behavior Of English Sole (Parophrys Vetulus) And Speckled Sanddabs (Citharichthys Stigmaeus), Alexandra Beatrix Stella
Effects Of Hypoxia On Anti-Predator Behavior Of English Sole (Parophrys Vetulus) And Speckled Sanddabs (Citharichthys Stigmaeus), Alexandra Beatrix Stella
Master's Theses
Predator detection and successful escape behaviors are critical to the survival of juvenile fish. However, rising temperatures and increased nutrient pollution result in more frequent hypoxic events (i.e., low dissolved oxygen levels), which may impact fish health and survival. This research examined the effects of hypoxia on two flatfish species commonly found in the Elkhorn Slough, an important nursery habitat in central California. English sole and speckled sanddabs were exposed to five DO treatments ranging from 8.0 mg/L DO (normoxic) to 1.0 mg/L DO (severely hypoxic). A startle response trial was used to examine the impact of increasingly hypoxic conditions …
The Mediating Role Of Perceived Organizational Support On The Relationship Between Wellness Programs And Job Satisfaction, Andy Tran
Master's Theses
The purpose of the current study was to examine the mediating role of perceived organizational support (POS) on the relationship between wellness programs (participations and availability) and job satisfaction. A total of 83 employees participated in the study, which utilized online survey distribution. Results showed that POS fully mediated the relationship between both participation and availability of wellness programs and job satisfaction. In other words, employees who participated in a wellness program felt more supported by their organization, leading to greater job satisfaction. In addition, the results suggested that when organizations offered more wellness programs, employees were more likely to …

Self-Control, Nonattachment, And Cardiovascular Functioning: The Effects Of Self-Control And Nonattachment On Cardiovascular Responses To Stress, Ari Feinstein
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally and creates a large economic burden on society, through cost of treatment and missed workdays (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022). The body of research examining factors contributing to the development and exacerbation of CVD primarily focused on identifying biological factors until the development of George Engels biopsychosocial model in the 1970s (Engel, 1977). Researchers then turned to identifying psychosocial factors contributing to CVD, particularly in the context of identifying modifiable psychosocial factors. Trait self-control and nonattachment are two psychosocial constructs that have been associated with positive outcomes …

Trxg And Pcg Regulation Of Cardiac Cell Division And Patterning In Embryonic Heart Development, Adam J. Farmer
Trxg And Pcg Regulation Of Cardiac Cell Division And Patterning In Embryonic Heart Development, Adam J. Farmer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most common developmental abnormalities seen at birth. Therefore, it is critical to understand the molecular mechanisms that ensure cardiogenesis proceeds correctly. These mechanisms include those facilitated by the essential evolutionarily conserved Trithorax Group (TrxG) and Polycomb Group (PcG) protein complexes that govern proper gene expression during development and cardiogenesis. The Drosophila melanogaster dorsal vessel, a linear tube composed of both contractile cardial cells (CCs) from Seven-up (Svp) and Tinman (Tin) lineages and nephrocytic pericardial cells (PCs), has served as an excellent model system to uncover the roles of genes regulating proper cardiogenesis in mammals. …

Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel L. Ballard
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents, especially those with a mental illness, often behave in ways judged to be impulsive, overly emotional, and irresponsible (Gogtay et al., 2004; Lawrence et al., 2015; Tamnes et al., 2010). Many teen behaviors which concern adults can be related to underdeveloped skills or competencies, rate of brain development, or expressions of mental disorders (Casey et al., 2011; Serbin et al., 2011; Spear, 2000). Behaviors commonly associated with adolescence, such as impulsivity, risk-taking, and efforts to fit in with peers, are often seen as a serious threat to school harmony, learning, and student safety, necessitating a disciplinary response from school …

Unequal Trust: Bottled Water Consumption, Distrust In Tap Water, And Economic And Racial Inequality In The United States, Daniel Jaffee
Unequal Trust: Bottled Water Consumption, Distrust In Tap Water, And Economic And Racial Inequality In The United States, Daniel Jaffee
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reviewing public health, nutrition, and social science literature, this article examines how bottled water consumption and spending in the United States differ along lines of race, ethnicity, and income, how these consumption patterns have changed in recent years, and how those shifts map onto perceptions of the safety and trustworthiness of tap water supplies, both before and since the Flint water disaster. It also addresses the differential impact of bottled water spending on household income. The findings challenge the truism that bottled water consumption is positively correlated with income, instead showing a bimodal racial and class consumption pattern that reflects …

The Impact Of Whole Fruits High In Anthocyanins On Blood Lipids In Middle-Aged Women, Denise N. Leininger
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Cardiometabolic Diseases (CMDs) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women. During the menopause transition, drops in estrogen play a favorable role in the excess accumulation of Intraabdominal Fat (IAF), altering blood lipid metabolism and inducing inflammatory responses in CMDs attributed to dyslipidemia. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined current research on the effects of whole fruits high in anthocyanins on blood lipid metabolism in women at risk for CMDs. This meta-analysis included 15 studies using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Overall, effect sizes were not significant when exploring blood lipid marker outcomes High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), …
Educational Myths Of An American Empire: Colonial Narratives And The Meriam Report, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Myths Of An American Empire: Colonial Narratives And The Meriam Report, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Meriam Report is a remarkable historical artifact of the United States' colonial project. The idea of a stronger nation through education embodied in the report betrays the report's imperial core. The report's authors express moral outrage at the failure of the United States to respect the human dignity of Native Americans. To absolve these failures, the report repeatedly looks to education as the way forward. My interest is in the discursive construction of that argument, specifically how new discourses of progress, scientific management, and modern administrative principles were used to justify expansion of the federal government and solidify the …

Cyclic Di Amp Level In Various Mutants And Clinical Isolates Of Streptococcus Pyogenes, Tasmim Hossain
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pyogenes is a Gram-positive aerotolerant bacterium that is an extracellular, non-motile, non-sporulating pathogen. They are clinically important in humans not only because of their pathogenicity but their remarkable ability to adapt to harsh conditions. Viability and virulence of S. pyogenes are reported to be associated with cyclic-di-adenosine monophosphate (c-di-AMP). Proper biosynthesis of this second messenger is essential to maintain ionic balance, homeostasis and cell envelope integrity as it has been reported to be associated with the expression of the virulence factors SpeB which the pathogens use to fight the host immune system leading to infection development. c-di-AMP helps S. …

Articles
Ireland has among the lowest rates of breastfeeding worldwide. Despite policies to support breastfeeding, breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity remain low in Ireland. Greater knowledge about support received in the maternity unit may—in part—shed light on why this is so. Our aim was to analyse women's experiences of the breastfeeding supports available in the early postnatal period in Ireland. We conducted an analysis of an open-ended question on a cross-sectional survey about breastfeeding support conducted in the Republic of Ireland in 2022. Participants were asked to provide comments about the breastfeeding support they received in the maternity unit or during your …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accessing reasonable work accommodations may be difficult for healthcare professionals with impairments, particularly those who suffer from mental health and substance use disorders (MHSUD). The use of workplace accommodations by medical professionals who also have MHSUD may experience barriers to their accommodations. The article explores (1) the difference between the types of work accommodations and (2) the types of barriers healthcare professionals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders experience and how they impact their risk of relapse. Implications for physicians, nurses, and counselors are discussed.

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Introduction: Cervical cancer ranks second globally in cancer-related deaths among women. There is evidence linking the incidence and risk of cervical cancer to the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccination has the potential to prevent more than 90% of HPV-attributable cancers. However, the HPV vaccination rate in China is still low. Therefore, factors associated with HPV vaccination are required among those who never received the vaccine. Objective: China has implemented programs to promote HPV vaccination; however, the HPV infection rate is still very high in Shandong Province, especially Heze City, and there is no study on the vaccination factors …
