The combination of L-DOPA and pargyline caused a decrease in level of aspartate and an increase in that of glutamine in vivo in cerebral cortex, cerebellum, brain stem, hypothalamus, neostriatum and cervical cord of rat. There was also a decreased incorporation of radioactivity from [1-14C]acetate into amino acids in rico, most notably in cerebellum and brain stem. The labelling of glutamine was especially affected. In addition, cortical slices were prepared from guinea pigs which had been pretreated with pargyline. These slices were incubated with and without 1 mM L-DOPA in media containing [l- 14C]acetate. Pargyline alone caused a stimulation of …

The Effects Of Molecular Weight, Agitation And Zeta Potential Of Retention Aids On Filler Retention, Trieu Nguyen
The Effects Of Molecular Weight, Agitation And Zeta Potential Of Retention Aids On Filler Retention, Trieu Nguyen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
When it comes to filler retention, the most frequently studied parameters are: Molecular weight of the retention aid, degree of agitation, and zeta potential.
Alum, as an electrolyte, and various polymers of the same chemical structure, but different molecular weights were evaluated for their performances in retaining TiO2. Different degrees of agitation were introduced to the stock to investigate the effect of turbulence on retention, and, finally, zeta potential was varied to observe its effect.
Higher molecular weight polymer was found to produce better retention. On the other hand, agitation reduced it. Retention seemed to be favorable with …

Studies On The Teichoic Acids Of The Pneumococcus, Eve Ida Barak Briles
Studies On The Teichoic Acids Of The Pneumococcus, Eve Ida Barak Briles
Student Theses and Dissertations
The investigations described in this dissertation are presented in two parts. Part I deals with the mode of segregation of the pneumococcal wall teichoic acid during cell growth and division. Teichoic acid was labeled with 3H-choline (a teichoic acid-specific constituent of pneumococci) or an analogue, and its distribution among progeny cells over several generations was followed by autoradiography. The results confirm the zonal growth model for Gram-positive coccal cells. In Part II, the pneumococcal Forssman antigen is identified as a membrane lipoteichoic acid. The following lines of evidence suggest that the teichoic acid chains of the molecule may be …

A Review Of Salinity Problems Of Organisms In United States Coastal Areas Subject To The Effects Of Engineering Works, Gordon Gunter, Buena S. Ballard, A. Venkataramiah
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The nongaseous substances that normally move in and out of cells are metabolites, water and salts. The common salts in water determine its salinity, and the definition of sea water salinity and its composition are discussed. The relationships of salinity to all phyla of animals living in the coastal waters are reviewed, with emphasis on the estuaries of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States, which are particularly influenced by coastal engineering works and changes of salinity caused thereby.
The fauna of estuaries is made up of a few brackish water species which complete their life cycles there, …

Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis
Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of fish parasites is directly related to the value of the fish they affect. Alaskan salmonids are extremely important and are constantly increasing in value to the United States. Other countries, such as Japan and Russia, are also finding Alaskan salmonids important as a foodstuff. If human populations continue growing at present rates, in only a few years there could be twice as many people eating fish. As a recreational asset in Alaska, salmonids rank at or near the top, both for sportfishing and as a natural attraction. It is thus important from an economic point of view …

In Vitro Effects Of Prolactin, Cortisol, Aldosterone, And Cyclic Amp On Branchial Na+, K+ - Activated Atpase Of The Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Stephen Burke Kerby
Master's Theses
In vitro effects of prolactin, cortisol, aldosterone, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate were studied on branchial Na+, K+ - activated ATPase of freshwater adapted killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus. Decreases in ATPase activity were found after treatment with prolactin and aldosterone. Cyclic AMP caused an increase in ATPase activity. The action of cortisol on this enzyme was not clear.A dose - response relationship was found only for cyclic AMP .It is proposed that cyclic AMP may be involved in the adaptation of F. heteroclitus to seawater.

Residual Effects Of N-K Fertilization Of Coastal Bermudagrass On Spring Populations Of Weed Species, R. A. Allured, E. C. Gordon, R. E. Frans, Lyell F. Thompson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A "Coastal bermudagrass" (Cynodon dactylon L.) sod was treated during a five-year period with rates of N and K fertilizers ranging from none to high levels of both elements. In the spring of the sixth year differences in weed species and population densities among the treated plots were observed. Spring weed counts showed that high rates of N fertilizer reduced the number of weed species and the total broadleaf weed population density by 37 and 81%, respectively. The higher rates of K fertilizer also reduced the population density of common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) and yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris Hill),the …
A Taxonomic And Distributional Survey Of The Benthic Blue-Green Algal Flora Of The Skokomish River Estuary, Louis J. Boitano
A Taxonomic And Distributional Survey Of The Benthic Blue-Green Algal Flora Of The Skokomish River Estuary, Louis J. Boitano
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a taxonomic and distributional survey of the benthic blue-green algal flora within an estuary system. Physical parameters were considered in the seasonal growth and distribution of algal species. A majority of the observed species occur in all habitats of the estuary and are present throughout the year. Seasonal growth rates and distribution are primarily dependent upon light intensity, temperature, salinity, and substrate condition. The largest extent of growth and distribution occurs in the late spring and summer months at which time the abiotic factors are most favorable for the development of benthic algal communities.

Survival Mechanisms Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria, M. L. Schuster, D. P. Coyne
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Natural habitats usually do not provide bacteria the continuity of agricultural crops. With continuous culture. perpetuation of pathogen is no problem. Although agricul tural practices provide some discontinuity between crops. it is less than that in nature. Uniformity of crop germ plasm also favors inoculum buildup and perhaps perpetuation of the pathogens.

Recollections, George W. Beadle
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
In these exciting times when elementary and high schools teach modern biology, including many of the intricacies of biochemical genetics, the long slow process by which our present knowledge in this area was gained is not often fully appreciated. A third of a century elapsed before Mendel’s work was "rediscovered" and properly appreciated. Archibald E. Garrod’s (1) prophetic appreciation of the relation genetics and biochemistry, beginning soon after the so-called rediscovery of Mendel, lay fallow for more than forty years despite the fact that he published widely and relatively voluminously. As late as a quarter of a century after the …

Measurement Of Soil Water Potential By Adsorption Conductivity, V. Philip Rasmussen Jr.
Measurement Of Soil Water Potential By Adsorption Conductivity, V. Philip Rasmussen Jr.
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Current methods of measuring soil water potential are reviewed, and the limitations of each are noted. The need for a transducer that will measure soil water potential over a wide moisture range for long periods of time is delineated. The concept of utilizing an adsorptive surface that resembles the soil in its water holding capacity as a transducer is discussed. Various designs and materials are tested for such a transducer.
All designs tested did not fulfill the requirements needed for a truly useful transducer. However, experimental results show that modification of the adsorptive surface should allow construction of a unit …
Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp
Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp
Masters Theses
The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.
A soil perfusion apparatus was used to determine the effects of 2,4-D in a typical soil ecosystem. Bacterial plate counts and nutrient …

Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard
Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard
Theses and Dissertations
Ornithine plays an important role in mammalian intermediary metabolism. Ornithine can be (1) utilized as a component of the urea cycle, (2) decarboxylated to form putrescine, a precursor of the polyamines, spermidine and spermine, and (3) converted metabolically to arginine, proline and glutamate. In prior investigations conducted in our laboratories and others, free endogenous hepatic pools of ornithine were found to be elevated following hydrazine administration. Consequently, time-course alterations of arginase, ornithine δ-transaminase, ornithine transcarbamylase, and ornithine decarboxylase activities were investigated regarding the effect of hydrazine treatment on hepatic ornithine metabolism in the rat. As an outgrowth of these investigations, …
