Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Forest Conservation In Nepal: Encouraging Women's Participation, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS focuses on ways in which women have been involved in a government forest conservation and restoration program in Nepal. As is common with many large-scale projects with a general impact, women were not a direct focus of the project's original design. As activities got underway, however, both the Nepali staff and their expatriate colleagues quickly realized that the direct involvement of women was crucial to the success of the project's participatory strategy. Over the initial five years, 1980 to 1985, a number of approaches to addressing women's needs and generating their active participation were tried. The …

Growth And Proteolytic Activity Of Selected Psychrotrophic Bacteria In Whole Milk And Whole Milk Retentate, Ravinder Reddy
Growth And Proteolytic Activity Of Selected Psychrotrophic Bacteria In Whole Milk And Whole Milk Retentate, Ravinder Reddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the last twenty years a number of membrane separation processes have evolved from laboratory scale, through pilot plant investigation, to full scale production units. One such process, ultrafiltration, has been found particularly useful in the dairy industry. Ultrafiltration uses porous polymeric membranes to separate molecules, principally on the basis of their molecular weight. In milk, fat, protein and associated substances are retained on the membrane. Permeate, which passes through the membrane contains mainly water, lactose and other low molecular weight substances. There is interest in ultrafiltration of milk because of it is potential importance in saving costs to both …

Biotechnology: Altering Agriculture And The Nature Of Food, Susan K. Harlander
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Fundamental discoveries in molecular biology within the past 30 years have initiated a biological revolution, which will have a profound effect on industry, government, and academic institutions. To date, the major industrial focus of this technology has been its use in the development of human healthcare-related products, such as human growth hormone, insulin, interferons, and interleukins, which can now be mass produced by genetically engineered microorganisms. However, the potential for genetically engineering plant, animal, and microbial cells with desirable structural, functional or chemical properties, offers an exciting new dimension for biotechnological input into the production and processing of foods. This …

Assessment Of Influence That The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Has On Exercise Habit Of Members Living In Utah County, Gary L. Preston
Theses and Dissertations
This study identified and analyzed the influence the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had on the decision of 309 respondents to exercise. The data obtained from the questionaires were analyzed using chi-square to compare males and females. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were justified: women were more influenced by the LDS Church to exercise than men; LDS males and females exercised more than average American adults; walking, jogging, and aerobic dance were the most popular choices of LDS exercisers; and, there is a need to improve the awareness of LDS members concerning the Physical …

Coagglutination And Enzyme Capture Tests For Detection Of Escherichia Coli Β-Galactosidase, Β-Glucuronidase, And Glutamate Decarboxylase, Charles W. Kaspar, Paul A. Hartman, Andrew K. Benson
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Polyclonal antibodies to Escherichia coli β-galactosidase, β-glucuronidase, and glutamate decarboxylase were used in coagglutination tests for identification of these three enzymes in cell lysates. Enzyme capture assays were also developed for the detection of E. coli β-galactosidase and β-glucuronidase. The enzymes were released by using a gentle lysis procedure that did not interfere with antibody-enzyme interactions. All three enzymes were detected in 93% (51 of 55) of the E. coli strains tested by coagglutination; two of the three enzymes were identified in the remaining 7%. Of 42 non-E. coli tested by coagglutination, only four nonspecifically agglutinated either two or …

Underground Water Problem At Chadron, Nebraska: Causes And Solution, Arthur W. Struempler
Underground Water Problem At Chadron, Nebraska: Causes And Solution, Arthur W. Struempler
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Chadron, Nebraska and Chadron State College have experienced rising underground water levels and deteriorating streets and buildings in recent years. Groundwater levels have been measured monthly on the campus and in the City for a six-year period (1981-1986). Water levels on the measured parts of the campus show a rise of about two feet per year for the 1981-1984 period. In ]985, the water table started to decline, probably linked to the drought and decreased consumption of lawn-irrigation water. In 1986, a wastewater (desaturation) well was installed and the groundwater table continued its decline. On the other hand, a slower …
Isolation And Characterization Of Vinclozolin-Resistant Mutants Of Neurospora Crassa, Kimberly Booth Thurmon
Isolation And Characterization Of Vinclozolin-Resistant Mutants Of Neurospora Crassa, Kimberly Booth Thurmon
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Six vinclozolin-resistant mutants of N. crassa obtained following ultraviolet irradiation and selection on vinclozolin media, showed 1:1 segregation of the vinclozolin-resistant trait. In addition to being vinclozolin resistant, the six mutants had altered, non-wild-type morphology and were osmotic sensitive, with the different mutants exhibiting varying degrees of sensitivity. Genetic analysis indicated linkage of the three traits. Reappearance of osmotic sensitivity/altered morphology in crosses of phenotypically recombinant F3 progeny supported the presence of modifier(s). Rates of growth on vinclozolin media placed the six mutants into three groups. In most cases the rates were comparable to rates of growth on W-M …
A Comparison Of The Organization Of Chloroplast-Associated And Chloroplast-Free Action Bundles In Nitella Internodal Cells, Kelly Tennyson Dineley
A Comparison Of The Organization Of Chloroplast-Associated And Chloroplast-Free Action Bundles In Nitella Internodal Cells, Kelly Tennyson Dineley
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The actin fibrils found at the ectoplasm-endoplasm interface in Nitella internodal cells are a major component of the mechanism that is responsible for cytoplasmic streaming in these giant algal cells. The fibrils have been shown to attach to the inner surface of internodal chloroplasts which are embedded in long files within the stationary ectoplasm along the length of the cell. The existence of actin bundles at the ends of the cell, where chloroplast files are absent, has not been examined. Through the use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the present work shows that actin bundles are continuous throughout the …
Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien
Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …

Morphometric Analysis Of Anguina Amsinckiae From Three Host Species, Dan James Pantone, John A. Griesbach, Armand R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Amsinckia species (fiddleneck) in the South Coast Ranges of California were surveyed to determine if any of the 12 different California species of Amsinckia are hosts of the nematode, Anguina amsinckiae (Steiner and Scott, 1935) Thorne, 1961. Previously only Amsinckia intermedia Fischer and Meyer was reported as a host of Anguina amsinckiae. The survey established that there are at least two additional hosts of Anguina amsinckiae: Amsinckia lycopsoides Lehmann and Amsinckia gloriosa Suksdorf. Seven sites containing nematode-infected Amsinckia plants were discovered. Every site contained two or more species of Amsinckia; however, only one site contained more than …

Scanning Electron Microscope Evaluation Of Drilling Damage And Acid Treatment Using Uncoated Core, D. R. Rothbard, R. A. Skopec, C. J. Bajsarowicz, T. H. Fate
Scanning Microscopy
A novel SEM technique allows the observation of the same pore on a core face after each step in a series of dynamic flow tests. It requires no conductive coating and facilitates core flow using a one inch (25.4 mm) diameter plug. Three separate studies were undertaken in which the procedure was used to observe the effects of drilling mud invasion, waterflooding, and matrix acidization on individual grains and pores. In the drilling mud study it was found that 2% HF removed most of the siderite weighted mud, but that mud residue and etching of the framework grains resulted in …
Stings Of Ants Of The Tribe Pheidologetini (Myrmicinae), Charles Kugler
Stings Of Ants Of The Tribe Pheidologetini (Myrmicinae), Charles Kugler
Insecta Mundi
The definition of the Tribe Pheidologetini in the ant subfamily Myrmicinae has always been problematic. Emery (1922) erected the tribe to contain the genera Pheidologeton, Oligomyrmex, Aneleus, Lophomyrmex, Trigonogaster, Ekebomyrma, Carebara and Paedalgus, but Wheeler (1922) put all these genera in the Solenopsidini. Neither Emery nor Wheeler satisfactorily defined either tribe. More recently, Ettershank (1966) proposed the “Pheidologeton genus group” composed of Pheidologeton, Oligomyrmex (including most Aneleus) , Lophomyrmex, Carebara, Paedalgus and Anisopheidole, but still uncertainty remains as to relationships of these genera and even the definitions of the genera themselves. New characters and new means of analysis are needed …

Mutations In Rhizobium Phaseoli That Lead To Arrested Development Of Infection Threads, K. Dale Noel, Kathryn A. Vandenbosch, Bruce Kulpaca
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Two Rhizobium phaseoli mutants, isolated previously by Tn5 mutagenesis, elicited infection threads which ceased development prematurely, usually within root hairs. These infection threads were wide, globular, and otherwise altered in morphology, compared with normal infection threads. Anatomy and division of the root cortical cells during initial stages of nodule morphogenesis appeared normal. However, later nodule differentiation deviated considerably from normal development, and release of bacteria from infection threads was not observed. In tryptone-yeast extract medium the mutants sedimented during growth in shaken cultures and formed rough colonies on agar. Electrophoresis of washed cultures solubilized in dodecyl sulfate revealed that the …

The Contribution Of Electron Probe X-Ray Microanalysis (Epxma) To Pollution Studies, A. J. Morgan, C. Winters
The Contribution Of Electron Probe X-Ray Microanalysis (Epxma) To Pollution Studies, A. J. Morgan, C. Winters
Scanning Microscopy
This paper surveys the literature on the use of EPXMA in conjunction with (heavy metal) pollution studies.
Metal-accumulating compartments are usually granules or vacuoles of 6 main types (i) extracellular, soluble and fairly pure calcium carbonate granules; (ii) insoluble, calcium and phosphorus-rich granules, of ten containing several metal contaminants; (iii) multifunctional, calcium and phosphorus granules containing a high proportion of rather complex organic molecules; (iv) copper-(and sulphur) rich granules; (v) iron-(and phosphorus) rich granules; (vi) Cd, Zn, Cu and Hg -containing vacuoles, where the metals are presumably complexed with cysteine-rich metallothionein proteins, or their derivatives. With a few exceptions, types …
Nature And Properties Of Cardiovascular Deposits, B. B. Tomazic, E. S. Etz, W. E. Brown
Nature And Properties Of Cardiovascular Deposits, B. B. Tomazic, E. S. Etz, W. E. Brown
Scanning Microscopy
Mineral deposits from human aortas and bioprosthetic devices implanted in experimental animals show close similarities in chemical composition, solubility and structural characteristics. Chemical analyses show compositions corresponding to a Na, Mg, CO3 substituted apatitic calcium phosphate. Synergistic XRO, FT-IR and Raman Mi crop robe spectroscopic data provided coherent indication of Type-B CO32- incorporation. Microscopic and electron microprobe microanalyses, however, indicate substantial morphological and spatial heterogeneity in the deposits.
Solubility and kinetic dissolution data of the mineral fraction of deposits can be compared with the corresponding data of octacalcium phosphate (OCP). This may indicate that OCP is a …

Scanning Microscopy
Plateau-phase mouse clonal bone marrow stromal cell lines D2XRII and C3H c1 II produce decreasing levels of M-CSF (CSF-I), a specific macrophage progenitor cell humoral regulator, following x-irradiation in vitro. The decrease did not go below 40% of control levels, even after irradiation doses of 50,000 rad (500 Gy). In contrast, a distinct humoral regulator stimulating growth of GM-CSF/IL-3 factor-dependent (FD) hematopoietic progenitor cell lines was detected following radiation to doses above 2,000 rad. This humoral factor was not detectable in conditioned medium from irradiated cells, weakly detected using factor-dependent target cell populations in agar overlay, and was prominently detected …
The Ultrastructure Of Membranes In Sympathetic Ganglia, Catarina Andersson Forsman, Lars-Gösta Elfvin
The Ultrastructure Of Membranes In Sympathetic Ganglia, Catarina Andersson Forsman, Lars-Gösta Elfvin
Scanning Microscopy
This review presents some recent observations made on membranes in the mammalian sympathetic ganglia after application of freeze-fracturing and histochemistry. After freeze-fracture clear differences have been found between the neuronal and the satellite cell plasmalemma. The satellite cell plasma membrane exhibits specialized intramembrane particles not found in the neuronal membrane. Freeze-fracture cytochemistry reveals a further difference between the neurons and satellite cells i.e., a higher density of 𝛃-hydroxysterols is present in the satellite cell membrane than in the neuronal membrane.
Histochemical methods to localize 5'-nucleotidase, Ca2+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase in the membranes have been utilized. …
Evidence For N-Terminal Exposure Of The Protein Ia Subclass Of Neisseria-Gonorrhoeae Protein-I, Ralph C. Judd
Evidence For N-Terminal Exposure Of The Protein Ia Subclass Of Neisseria-Gonorrhoeae Protein-I, Ralph C. Judd
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The JS3 and FA638 strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae bear a protein IA subclass of protein I (P.I). The purified P.Is of surface-labeled strains JS3 and FA638 were cleaved with the N-terminal degradation enzyme leucine amino peptidase (LAP), and the resultant fragments were separated in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. Autoradiography demonstrated that the surface radiolabel was absent in a LAP-generated P.I peptide that was about 1,900 daltons lower in apparent molecular mass than the native P.I in both strains. Moreover, the 4G5 monoclonal epitope, known to be located on the surface of the organism, was also absent in the LAP-generated P.I …

Vasospastic Phenomena On The Luminal Replica Of Rat Brain Vessels, Enrico D. F. Motti, Hans-Georg Imhof, Jesus Martinez Garza, Gazi M. Yasargil
Scanning Microscopy
Strikingly localized ring-like constrictions (other than sphincters, cushions and offshoot furrows) have appeared on the casted vessels of some of our preparations. Morphology of the phenomena reveals diverse degree of active contraction of the vessel wall, ranging from corrugation of the luminal surface to near severance of the acrylic cast. Distribution of the vasospastic phenomena reveals as particularly affected the arteries in the diameter range between 25 and 75 μm, that belong either to intra-arterial anastomoses between the branches of each of the three major cerebral arteries or to their terminal junctions in the border zones (inter-arterial anastomoses). Among the …
Structure-Function Relationships In Radiation-Induced Cell And Tissue Lesions: Special References To The Contributions Of Scanning Electron Microscopy And Hematopoietic Tissue Responses, T. M. Seed
Scanning Microscopy
Contributions of scanning electron microscopy to the field of radiation biology are briefly reviewed and presented in terms of an overall goal to identify and characterize the structural features of radiation-induced lesions in vital cell and tissue targets. In the context of "lesion" production, the major radiation-elicited response sequences, the types and nature of measured end points, and governing temporal and radiobiological parameters are discussed and illustrated by using results derived from both in vitro cell systems and in vivo studies that measured tissue responses from various organ systems (respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and central nervous systems). Work in our laboratory …

Cryoultramicrotomy, which avoids the use of harsh fixation procedures, deleterious dehydration and plastic embedding can be combined with immunocytochemis try to determine the ultra-structural localization of cellular proteins. Our attempts to use the cryosectioning technique in combination with immunolabelling to bridge the gap between light and electron microscopic analysis of muscle morphology have enabled us to obtain new information on fibre typing at the ultrastructural level. Furthermore, we have obtained a marked improvement in the resolution of myofibrillar structures by using semithin cryosections for fluorescence microscopy. Data are also presented on correlated light and electron microscope immunocytochemistry of myocardial intermediate …
