Rb32-266 Cooling Milk On Nebraska Farms, P.A. Downs, E.B. Lewis

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The desire of Nebraska people to continue the improvement of living conditions and to secure more healthful foods has been responsible for many changes in methods of caring for milk. One of the important factors in keeping milk sweet and of good quality is the process of cooling and keeping it cool until used. Three of these processes are as follows: placing containers of warm milk in any quantity of still water or still air at temperatures ranging from freezing to within a few degrees of the temperature of the milk, placing the containers in such positions that air or …

Worm Parasites Of The Brown Rat (Mus Norvegicus) In The Philippine Islands, With Special Reference To Those Forms That May Be Transmitted To Human Beings, Marcos A. Tubangui Dec 1931

Worm Parasites Of The Brown Rat (Mus Norvegicus) In The Philippine Islands, With Special Reference To Those Forms That May Be Transmitted To Human Beings, Marcos A. Tubangui

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Summary

Besides the role that they play as carriers and reservoirs of bubonic plague and other bacterial as well as spirochretal infections, rats often harbor parasitic worms, some of which are also a menace to human health. In view of this and because of the fact that the helminthic fauna of rats has never been studied extensively in the Philippine Islands, it seemed desirable to undertake a systematic examination of these animals for the purpose of finding out if they are infested with parasites that are transmissible to man.

The examination of nine hundred fifty rats (Mus norvegicus) …

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin Jul 1931

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.

The Alkaloids, Felix F. Barre Jul 1931

The Alkaloids, Felix F. Barre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.

The thesis details standard laboratory methods for the extraction and separation of alkaloids from plant material, including a step-by-step …

Bulletin No. 227 - Soft-Curd Milk, R. L. Hill Jun 1931

Bulletin No. 227 - Soft-Curd Milk, R. L. Hill

UAES Bulletins

Data on the early studies on the curd character of milk are found in Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletin 207 and, therefore, are not included here. The key to research in this field came to light with the development of the "Hill Test," the results of which were first published in 1923. This test furnished a means of quantitatively measuring the difference in curd character of various milks.

The term "soft-curd" milk originated with R. L. Hill to describe milk which on coagulation with pepsin or rennin forms a curd that is soft and clabbery in consistency, differing widely from …

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"Pasture is the natural food of all domesticated herbivore, especially the ruminant, and the only single feed upon which it can be maintained in health indefinitely."

Pastures rank next to the alfalfa hay crop in total production of forage far livestock in Utah. For approximately five months each year pastures turnish the cheapest supply of feed available for dairy production. Their improvement and utilization to the best advantage as a source of valuable feed in Utah has been overshadowed by the abundance of alfalfa hay with its rich supply of minerals and high quality protein. There is a potentiality of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction into modern medicine digitalis has occupied a very important position in our material medica. Its widespread use as a remedy in conditions of failing heart, and its effectiveness as a diuretic in certain dropsical conditions have gained for it a reputation which is equaled by few other drugs. The opinion of pharmacologiate and physicians as to its mode of action and its field of clinical usefulness has been revised a number of times, and there is much diversity of teaching as to its use in special ailments. Among some workers there is a tendency to restrict its …

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt Jan 1931

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt

Bachelors’ Theses

In arranging this thesis an attempt has been made to show that by virtue of its embryology, anatomy and histology, the spleen is the better enabled to carry out its alleged functions. The discussion here presented is confined to a story of the functions of the mammalian spleen alone. The similarities in the reactions of the spleen in the various mammalia is quite evident. Experimentation and observations were carried out on the lower mammalia while only the reactions of the splenectomized humans could be observed.

Circular No. 90 - Swine Production In Utah, Harry H. Smith Nov 1930

Circular No. 90 - Swine Production In Utah, Harry H. Smith

UAES Circulars

During the last 20 years there has been a marked change in the type of hogs from the short-legged, wide-bodied or "hot-blood" type to a longer, somewhat more narrow-bodied, "leggier" type. For development of size in hogs they must have (1) length and depth of body, (2) length of leg, and (3) large but not coarse bones. The long-bodied rather "leggy" pig grows rapidly and makes the larger hog. While the modern hog is still a lard hog, it is not as thick and broad as were its predecessors. It is logical to assume that the hog of the future …

The Incidence Of Avian Tuberculosis In Mammals Other Than Swine, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin Aug 1930

The Incidence Of Avian Tuberculosis In Mammals Other Than Swine, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The recognition of a very widespread and intense distribution of avian tuberculosis on the farms of a wide area of the United States, as well as the involvement of a mammalian species also, brought to the foreground the question whether or not the great prevalence of poultry tuberculosis could be of importance also from a public health point of view. This phase of the problem not only pertains to the people on the farms but likewise is of fundamental importance to the consumers of poultry produce. European authors had already identified the avian tubercle bacillus in human lesions while in …

Bulletin No. 218 - The Alfalfa-Seed Chalcis-Fly In Utah: 1926-29, Inclusive, Charles J. Sorenson Jun 1930

Bulletin No. 218 - The Alfalfa-Seed Chalcis-Fly In Utah: 1926-29, Inclusive, Charles J. Sorenson

UAES Bulletins

During the past 10 or 15 years alfalfa-seed has constituted the major crop in western Millard County and in most of that portion of the Uintah Basin which is situated in Utah. In these sections of the state various natural conditions generally have been favorable for seed production. Within the last five years seed growers have thought that one of the principal limiting factors of the industry has been the alfalfa-seed chalcis-fly. Accordingly, a preliminary survey in the seed districts of the state was made in the fall of 1925 by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

The greater part of …

Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine Jun 1930

Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine

UAES Circulars

Too much importance cannot be given to the number and kind of calves raised. The life of an average cow is 6.5 years. To maintain the present number of cows in Utah about 15,385 heifer calves should be raised annually. One-half of all calves born are males and are usually disposed of in a few weeks; the other 50 per cent are females from which selection must be made to maintain the herds. In many parts of Utah the number of dairy cows should be increased and probably the best way to accomplish this is to raise carefully selected calves.

The Symptoms Of Spindle Tuber And Unmottled Curly Dwarf Of The Potato, R. W. Goss May 1930

The Symptoms Of Spindle Tuber And Unmottled Curly Dwarf Of The Potato, R. W. Goss

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The differentiation of the virus diseases of the potato on the basis of symptoms is an important but difficult phase of the virus problem. A knowledge of the variation in symptoms due to environmental factors is necessary both in investigational work and in the practical application of our knowledge to the control of these diseases in the field. A fairly comprehensive knowledge of the masking effect of certain environmental factors upon the symptoms of the mosaic group has been obtained through the work of various investigators. Considerably less information is available concerning the effect of environment upon the symptoms of …

Swine Sanitation, L. Van Es Mar 1930

Swine Sanitation, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

From the very beginning of Nebraska's agricultural development its farmers have recognized that the production of swine must of necessity accompany the growing of corn. The latter, one of the state's most important staples, cannot be marketed in a more economical manner than after having been transformed into pork, bacon, and lard. As a result the state has for many years maintained a rather dense swine population mainly divided into large herds kept on relatively small areas of land. This density of population, as well as certain practices in management and selective breeding, has brought about conditions favorable for the …

Circular No. 83 - Planning, Planting, And Caring For Young Orchard, Francis M. Coe Jan 1930

Circular No. 83 - Planning, Planting, And Caring For Young Orchard, Francis M. Coe

UAES Circulars

Fruit growing offers many advantages to the farmer of the intermountain west, chief of which is the high return possible from a relatively small farm. Few crops will give as high an acre-yield or return as a properly located and managed orchard. Acre-yields of from 500 to 800 bushels of apples, pears, or peaches are not unusual. The work is pleasant, interesting, and healthful, as well as remunerative when properly conducted. Fruit Growing Attractive, Profitable

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce Jan 1930

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this essay on the structure and function of the spleen is to bring together in somewhat concise form all the available knowledge concerning this organ up to the present moment. However, time and the difficulty of obtaining valuable articles has limited this essay considerably. The first few pages while not giving a very detailed historical background may be considered quite adequate for the purpose intended. The evolutionary development of the spleen is here considered in broad outline. The microscopic anatomy of the spleen and its function in relation to the blood have been considered in greater detail …

Effect Of Cultural Methods And Maturity Upon The Seed Value Of Eastern Nebraska Potatoes, H. O. Werner Dec 1929

Effect Of Cultural Methods And Maturity Upon The Seed Value Of Eastern Nebraska Potatoes, H. O. Werner

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Seed potatoes as good as northern stocks have been produced under a straw mulch in eastern Nebraska by experimenters and growers. Occasionally reports are heard that a lot of seed potatoes has been grown in eastern Nebraska by ordinary cultural methods for many years, apparently without loss of vigor or yielding capacity. In view of this situation it seemed advisable to investigate this problem to determine whether, and to what extent, environment and maturity as such influence the productivity of seed potatoes and also whether it is feasible to produce satisfactory seed potatoes in the southern and eastern portions of …
