Planning The Communities In Which We'll Want To Live: Papers Presented At The Fifth Annual Agri-Business Day March 31, 1966, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Department Of Economics, South Dakota State University

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The story of man's search for the necessities and comforts of life is the story of man's relationship to the land and other resources at his disposal and the combining and shaping of these resources to meet his wants and needs. Until modem times this process was largely one of trial and error. In man's quest for a better life he learned that the individual, working alone, could not fulfill many of his needs, but by joining with his neighbors they could provide services of mutual benefit. He also learned that some services are best provided by government and supported …

The Texas Expenditure System: An Evaluation Of Its Growth And Needs, Walton Terry Wilford Jan 1966

The Texas Expenditure System: An Evaluation Of Its Growth And Needs, Walton Terry Wilford

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Among the more perplexing problems facing state governments since World War II has been the need for substantial increments in the supply of state-supported social goods and services. The demand for these goods has risen considerably more rapidly than demand in the private sector, leading to enormous pressures on most state revenue structures. The State of Texas is no exception. Since 1947 structural problems have emerged within the administrative machinery of disbursing funds, new and expanded programs have been assumed at the state level, and Texas has been required to make important adjustments in its revenue structure. In 1961, faced …

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson Jan 1966

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural village was the basis of the original economy of Utah established by the Mormon settlers, but it has since been supplanted in importance by the industrial and commercial activities of the large centers of the Wasatch Front counties of Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah. This study was conducted in an attempt to determine the future of those communities removed from industrialized northern Utah. The village of Meadow, Millard County, was chosen as an example and it was subjected to a detailed geographic analysis. From this analysis conclusions have been drawn regarding its future.

Manufacturing In Texas: Facts And Fancy, Tom L. Mcknight Jun 1965

Manufacturing In Texas: Facts And Fancy, Tom L. Mcknight

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Regional generalizations are common with respect to various parts of the United States, but it is about Texas that they are perpetuated in greatest profusion. In that state, it has been irreverently remarked, one can "look farther and see less" than anywhere else in the nation. This delightful generalization is but one of myriad that have been composed about our erstwhile-largest state. Indeed, the folklore and autochthonous mythology of this country would be much the sparser were it not for the congeries of cliches concocted concerning Texas.

Perspective On Land Use—American Samoa, Bryan Farrell Jun 1965

Perspective On Land Use—American Samoa, Bryan Farrell

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

American Samoa, a dependent possession of the United States, consists of four small, volcanic islands in the tropical Southwest Pacific. The territory is a physical, ethnic and cultural outlier and close neighbor of the very much larger, independent, Western Samoa. American Samoa has a limited, largely subsistence agriculture, a low level of technology and a population which, since 1956, despite a rapid birth rate, has decreased because of emigration. Western Samoa on the other hand has a well-developed commercial agriculture, a rapidly increasing population and a relatively high economic potential.

Edwin Jay Foscue, Virginia Bradley Jun 1965

Edwin Jay Foscue, Virginia Bradley

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

On the occasion of Dr. Foscue's retirement it has seemed particularly appropriate to honor his forty-two years of teaching at Southern Methodist University with a special issue of the Journal of the Graduate Research Center because in 1932 he became the first editor of Field and Laboratory, the predecessor of the Journal, and in 1960 his paper, "East Texas: A Timbered Empire," comprised the first issue of the renamed and expanded Journal.

Sequent Occupance In The Santa Clara Valley, California, C. Langdon White Jun 1965

Sequent Occupance In The Santa Clara Valley, California, C. Langdon White

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The Santa Clara Valley beautifully exemplifies sequent occupance. Here an amazing drama has unfolded from the time of the primitive Amerindian, then through the Spanish and Mexican Period, the days of the cattle barons, the wheat bonanzas, the specialized agriculture at the turn of the century, and finally the period of immigration, urbanization, and industrialization (primarily electronic-missile defense). In his study published in 1932, Jan O. M. Broek dealt with the valley from the time of the Amerindian to the highly specialized horticulture of the 1920s. The present study purposes to telescope the work of Broek and to show that …

Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis Jan 1965

Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Sawmilling in Minnesota started about the time of settlement and, until 1870, mainly consisted of small mills located in the southern half of the state. Mills along the Mississippi River were mainly in urban centers while the remainder were scattered and associated with the clearing of the land and the meeting of the needs of local communities. After 1870, mills become larger. Many were constructed in northern Minnesota. All used forests in the northern port of the state and reduced them so greatly that, by 1920, the mills closed and were replaced by portable sawmills.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie Jan 1965

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY THINGS must be considered in planning a feed lot.

The site must be well chosen, fencing, gates and yards must be adequate for the cattle carried and feeding and watering facilities should be of a high standard.

Other things to consider are the provision of shelter and shade for the cattle and buildings for feed storage and other purposes.

Available Water Supply Of The Las Vegas Ground-Water Basin Nevada, Glenn Thomas Malmberg Jan 1965

Available Water Supply Of The Las Vegas Ground-Water Basin Nevada, Glenn Thomas Malmberg

Publications (WR)

The Las Vegas ground-water basin as described in this report includes the southern part of Indian Spring Valley, Three Lakes Valley, the northern half of Ivanpah Valley, and Las Vegas Valley. These valleys in part are inferred to form a hydrologic unit that includes an area of about 3,000 square miles in the southern part of Clark County, Nev.

The valleys forming the Las Vegas ground-water basin are broad structural depressions surrounded by mountains. The climate of the region is arid, and precipitation in the basin lowlands rarely exceeds 5 inches per year. Drainage is interior except for occasional Hood …

The Specific Status Of The Narrow-Skulled Vole (Subgenus Stenocranius Kashchenko) In North America, Robert L. Rausch Nov 1964

The Specific Status Of The Narrow-Skulled Vole (Subgenus Stenocranius Kashchenko) In North America, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

On morphological and zoogeographical grounds, discussed in the present paper, it is concluded that the narrow-skulled vole in North America, previously designated Microtus (Stenocranius) miurus Osgood, is conspecific with the Eurasian M. (Stenocranius) gregalis Pallas. Fourteen subspecies in Eurasia and 5 in North America are now recognized, but it is probable that the number in Eurasia will be reduced through future investigation. The Eurasian subspecies of this vole comprise two major groups, of which one occupies the tundra zone and the other occurs across central Asia below latitude 60° N; their geographic ranges are largely separate …

Digenetic Trematodes Of Fishes As Indicators Of The Ecology, Phylogeny And Zoogeography Of Their Hosts [Abstract], Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The prevalence and diversity of trematodes of fishes, together with the fact that many of them have considerable host specificity, make them a favorable group for studies of host relationships and zoogeography.

Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson Aug 1964

Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. Below the foothill region on the more gentle slopes and benchlands there was a broad belt dominated by bunch grasses. The grassy area intergraded into a zone dominated by northern …

Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Aug 1964

Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The body of writings on the philosophy and history of geology has grown in a remarkable way since the end of the Second World War. There is no obvious explanation for this quickening of interest in what are surely the most academic aspects of a science best known for its practical applications. Influences arising both from within and from outside the geological profession have probably been responsible. It is a matter of record that many departments of geology, upon resuming full-time operations after the war, decided not to go on moving in the old curricular ruts. The new courses, even …

Saffron Thistle, B J. Quinlivan, H. A. Pearce Jan 1964

Saffron Thistle, B J. Quinlivan, H. A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Saffron thistle is a declared primary noxious weed in Western Australia and is especially troublesome in the northern agricultural areas.

Field trials aimed at finding the cheapest and most effective method of controlling the weed have shown that 2,4-D applied at the correct stage is the best chemical to use.
