Myxobacterial Columns, Walter Fluegel Jan 1969

Myxobacterial Columns, Walter Fluegel

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The soil myxobacterium, Myxococcus fulvus, will produce clavate columns of slime and cells in certain static liquid cultures. The cells protrude from the thicker end of the column like pins in a pincushion. The column's distribution is in an even array. An hypothesis is suggested for the origin of these formations. The columns are not fruiting bodies. Column formation in other fruiting myxobacteria suggests that it is not a unique feature. Only one other fruiting myxobacterium which produced columns has been reported, and that more than two decades ago.

Cellular Activities During Aging In Mammals, Caleb Ellicott Finch Jan 1969

Cellular Activities During Aging In Mammals, Caleb Ellicott Finch

Student Theses and Dissertations

Although much is known about manifestations of ageing in mammals, the fundamental cause of ageing has remained obscure. Review of a widely scattered literature has demonstrated a histotypic selectivity in the effect of ageing on cell activities. Several recent examples have shown that certain age changes in cell activities can be reversed by transplantation to a young host. Thus, ageing does not appear to diminish the potential for genomic function. The selective and reversible age changes in cell activities are interpreted to be the result of a differential change in gene activity, which appears to be mediated at the supra-cellular …

Food And Nutritional Needs Of The World Population By 2000 A. D., Sitaram Shankar Kharbas May 1968

Food And Nutritional Needs Of The World Population By 2000 A. D., Sitaram Shankar Kharbas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigations were carried out to project the food needs of the world population by 2000 A. D., and to explore the possibilities of meeting these requirements.

About 70 percent of the world population presently living in developing countries do not get adequate diets, and suffer from many diseases of under-nutrition and malnutrition. They are unable to increase food production themselves. People in the developed nations have enough food and their food production is increasing at a rate faster than the rate of growth of population.

Cultivable land is the main source of food for man. The seas can also be …

Transfer Of Farm Real Estate In Utah, 1961-1964, Howard Rasmus Thomas May 1968

Transfer Of Farm Real Estate In Utah, 1961-1964, Howard Rasmus Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recorded "arms length" transfers of farm real estate were analyzed to determine factors affecting market value and assessment per acre, and assessment to market value ratios.

The data were aggregated by county and geographical groups. The geographical groups were made up of counties with similar population densities and similar climatic conditions.

Using multiple regression analysis and tabular analysis, size of parcel, quality of land, and distance to Salt Lake City were found to affect market value per acre; size of parcel and quality of land were found to affect assessment and assessment to market value ratios.

A Descriptive Model Of The Sweet Corn And Pea Processing Industry Of Southern Minnesota, David P. Brennan

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This research project was initiated to construct and test a model of the sweet corn and pea processing industry of Minnesota. The model is a composite abstract consisting of several basic theories of general application and several hypotheses which were formulated to consider the unique properties associated with sweet corn and pea processing. These are related to the agricultural and industrial factors which are inseparable parts of sweet corn and pea processing. Testing the model concerned the evaluation of the theories and hypotheses with regard to the real life situation. The basic concepts used in the model were refined and …

Economic Analysis Of An Iranian Water Development: The Sefeed Rood Project, Malek M. Mohtadi May 1967

Economic Analysis Of An Iranian Water Development: The Sefeed Rood Project, Malek M. Mohtadi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is an evaluation of the methods and assumptions employed by those groups responsible for preparation of the original benefit/cost data describing the Sefeed Rood project. Benefit/cost ratios reported by the French engineering firm, Cotha Sogreah, and Plan Organization in a joint study range from 2:1 to 2.6:1 (6 and 10). A priori these seem suspect since the dam plus necessary canals and diversion works are obviously large and costly and only primary benefits are considered. The question is whether the potential benefits are likely to ever yield a positive return on investment and, if so, how long a …

Effects Of Dehydration Processes With Special Reference To Microwave Irradiation On Selected Biochemical And Physical Changes In Apples (Pyrus Malus), Fredoon Shahin Nury May 1967

Effects Of Dehydration Processes With Special Reference To Microwave Irradiation On Selected Biochemical And Physical Changes In Apples (Pyrus Malus), Fredoon Shahin Nury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many innovations have been attempted to shorten drying time or improve dehydration techniques for foods. Despite the recent advances in science and technology the bulk of dried fruit production throughout the world, over 1 1/2 billion tons (dry basis), is prepared by the energy of the sun (Copley and Van Arsdel, 1964). However, other techniques and processes for food dehydration and preservation are occupying more prominent positions in the overall production of dehydrated foods, particularly in the more advanced countries. Economics notwithstanding, it is readily apparent that dehydration as compared to sun-drying offers at least two main advantages. It is …

Ecological Distribution Of The Genus Peromyscus In The Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Don E. Wilson Mar 1967

Ecological Distribution Of The Genus Peromyscus In The Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Don E. Wilson

Biology ETDs

The Sandia Mountains in central New Mexico present an opportunity not often available for comparative studies of mice of the genus Peromyscus. Five species of Peromyscus are present in the range. Most investigators have been able to study only two or three naturally coexisting species of Peromyscus (McCabe and Blanchard, 1950; Dice, 1942; Jameson, 1951). Naylor (1964) described the vegetation, geography, and climate of the Sandia Mountains and Tatschl (1966) described bird distribution. A bioecological study of the Juan Tabo area is also available (Parker, 1949). The present study represents an attempt to elucidate the distribution of five species of …

A life-form study, using the Raunkiaer classification, was mode of the spermatophytes of Minnesota. Three life-form spectra ore presented: Minnesota (Ph 13.0%, Ch 3.0%, H 49.0%, Cr 22.0%, Th 13.0%); Cloy County, a grassland area (Ph 12.3%, Ch 1.7%, H 53.7%, Cr 19.5%, Th 12 .8%); and St. Louis and Lake counties, within the Boreal Coniferous Forest (Ph 14.9%, Ch 2.9%, H 47.2%, Cr 25.5%, Th 9.5%. (These data indicate that a hemicryptophytic climate prevails in Minnesota and ore generally in harmony with Raunkiaer's assertions concerning the relation between life-form spectra and latitude.

Some Aspects Of Apiculture In Minnesota, Carmen W. Harper, Charles F. Calkins Jan 1967

Some Aspects Of Apiculture In Minnesota, Carmen W. Harper, Charles F. Calkins

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The modest references to insects in geographic literature have been largely confined to those deriving notoriety as vectors of disease-producing organisms (e.g ., the tsetse fly and the anopheles mosquito). Among the beneficial insects, bees have been significant in man's organization of area for agricultural purposes for at least 4,000 years. The management of bees for the production of honey is a widely dispersed economic activity in the United States. Minnesota has been a leading state in honey production for many years. Minnesota's 1966 honey crop of 17,940,000 pounds was the third largest in the United States. Approximately 90,000 colonies …

A Geographical Analysis Of The Emergence And Subsequent Disappearance Of The Cotton Industry In The Virgin River Basin (1856-1910), Brooks Kent Hanson Jan 1967

A Geographical Analysis Of The Emergence And Subsequent Disappearance Of The Cotton Industry In The Virgin River Basin (1856-1910), Brooks Kent Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

At one time the cotton industry in Utah was a flourishing activity. Many pioneer farmers were engaged in the growing of this staple for the purpose of providing much needed cotton for the Territory of Utah before the days of railroads and highways. After the favorable climatic conditions for agriculture in Utah's Dixie were discovered, leaders of the Latter-day Saint Church made plans for the growing of many fruits and vegetables of the temperate zone. Of these, cotton received by far the most attention, as a domestic source of this raw material was at one time vital to the well …
