Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr. Jan 1964

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.

The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

The Darkling Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site (Coleoptera - Tenebrionidae), Willis A. Packham

Theses and Dissertations

In the desert areas of southwestern United States the Coleoptera, family Tenebrionidae, constitute a conspicuous part of the ground-dwelling insects. Most species are black or dull chestnut-brown. They are primarily nocturnal and during the day can be found under rocks, debris, loose bark, or in rodent burrows. On cloudy days they may be seen lumbering along the desert floor. Most tenebrionids feed on plant materials of various sorts. In August, 1959, Brigham Young University initiated an ecological study at the Nevada Test Site near Mercury in Nye County, Nevada. As part of that study, emphasis was given to the ground-dwelling …

The Potential Of A Pulp And Paper Industry In The State Of West Virginia, James W. Clay Jan 1963

The Potential Of A Pulp And Paper Industry In The State Of West Virginia, James W. Clay

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

West Virginia is traditionally a wood-producing state. Approximately 64 per cent of its land area is classified as commercial forest, and it has ranked as one of the nation’s top four producers of hardwood lumber for the past century.

A long-term failure of the state has been its inability to attract secondary wood industries into the area. The major portion of lumber produced in the state has been sent to outside concerns for further manufacturing and processing. In the past decade only about 18 per cent of the lumber produced in West Virginia was used for manufacture within the state. …

The Family And Free Time, Merle Gunsalus Jan 1963

The Family And Free Time, Merle Gunsalus

SDSU Extension Circulars

Today Americans have more leisure than any people have ever had; yet they seem to find little real enjoyment in what they do. A recent observation suggests that the poverty-stricken may soon be replaced by the leisure-stricken. People are indulging in more activities, going more places, spending more money than ever before; yet few recognize the need for more thoughtfulness about the use of leisure time in family living.

Gulf and Caribbean Research

This study concerns the ecological habits of living Foraminifera from a shallow Louisiana coastal bay during a period of ten months. It is a part of an extensive study undertaken by the Coastal Studies Institute of Louisiana State University to determine the effect of chemical and physical properties of water upon marine life in a large, open bay over an extended period of time. Samples were collected monthly from established locations for the chemical, biological and foraminiferal determinations. Results of the chemical and biological studies will be published by the respective investigators in subsequent papers.

Texas And Technology, Martin Goland Apr 1962

Texas And Technology, Martin Goland

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to talk with you about the Texas scene and its stake in science and technology. The force of science in modern society is a compelling one, reaching into virtually every aspect of our lives, and the future health of our state and our nation hinges in large measure on the extent to which we plan wisely to have technology serve our ends, rather than control our destiny.

Urea For Sheep And Cattle On Dry Feed, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Urea can be a valuable supplement for ruminants which have to depend on dry feed low in protein.

It is not a substitute for good quality conserved fodder.

Urea is extremely poisonous if eaten in excess and great care must be taken when feeding it to stock.

There are a variety of ways in which urea can be fed and these are outlined in this article.

The Department of Agriculture's Animal Nutrition Laboratory is now carrying out trials to determine the most convenient and safest method.

Urea is most effective as a fertiliser; when used in this way it results …

New Danger From Hoary Cress, G R W Meadly, R. D. Royce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

HOARY CRESS is undoubtedly one of the worst weeds introduced into Australia. It is a vigorous deep rooted perennial which competes strongly with crop plants and seriously decreases yields.

The importance of three recent discoveries of this weed in Western Australia therefore need hardly be stressed.

G. R. W. Meadly, Offlcer-in-Charge of the Weeds and Seeds Branch, and R. D. Royce, Offlcer-in- Charge of the Botany Branch, report on two recently found infestations of hoary cross in the Great Southern, and one at Jerramongup.

An intensive eradication programme is under way.

Trees Of Western Australia. No. 99. The Mottlecah (Eucalyptus Macrocarpa Hook.). No. 100. The Bald Island Marlock (Eucalyptus Lehmannii Preiss Ex Schau.), Charles Austin Gardner

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

This species, a shrub between six and 15 feet in height, is the largest-flowered of all the species of Eucalyptus.

The name is intended to indicate this fact, but unfortunately the Greek work makros means "long" and actually the fruit "karpos" is remarkably short in comparison to its diameter, being in fact the broadest fruit within the genus.

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr. Jan 1962

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Ten species of Recent mammals that formerly occurred in Nebraska have been extirpated there by European man. Surprisingly few specimens of the species concerned are preserved in museum collections. Perusal of a representative segment of the historical literature pertaining to Nebraska has revealed records of occurrence of most of the extirpated species that provide a basis for estimating the former distribution of each in the State.
