Ecology And Floristics Of Knife Island, A Gull Rookery On Lake Superior, John M. Bernard, Donald W. Davidson, Rudy G. Koch Jan 1971

Ecology And Floristics Of Knife Island, A Gull Rookery On Lake Superior, John M. Bernard, Donald W. Davidson, Rudy G. Koch

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - Certain aspects of the ecology and floristics of Knife Island, Minnesota, a small gull rookery on the north shore of Lake Superior, were studied. 63 species of vascular plants, and 23 species of Bryophytes were collected, including one newly recorded in this state. Very high levels of soil organic matter, phosphate, and potassium were present, and low pH levels (ranging from 3.6 to 4.2) were found. These levels appear to reflect the intensive use of the island by the herring gulls. It is concluded that the major factor controlling the development of the flora and vegetation of Knife …

Fisheries Report No Vii (7) - Results Of A Biological Survey Of The Millstream Area, A. A. Burbidge Dr

Fisheries Research Reports

Millstream has long been recognised as an unique and outstanding area, both scenically and from a biological aspect. The area of prime interest consists of a series of deep pools in the bed of the Fortescue River (about 15 miles long including Gregory Gorge) and the springs and streams which feed them. Most of the springs are in the sides of the river bed but one of the largest is about 1% miles to the south. This feeds a swift flowing stream running north into the river bed.

The first Europeans to see the area were the exploring party led …

A Taxonomic Comparison To Uta Stansburiana Of The Great Basin And The Upper Colorado River Basin In Utah, Lloyd C. Pack Sep 1970

A Taxonomic Comparison To Uta Stansburiana Of The Great Basin And The Upper Colorado River Basin In Utah, Lloyd C. Pack

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of a comparative study between the Uta stansburiana of the Great Basin and Upper Colorado River Basin, and the fact that several reptile species have developed distinct populations in the Upper Colorado River Basin prompted this study. Twenty-one external characteristics of these lizards were compared, including several which had not been previously used in the separation of Uta stansburiana into subspecies. All of the statistical data were obtained from preserved specimens. Twelve of the twenty-one characteristics show significant differences between the Great Basin and Upper Colorado River Basin populations. The characteristics of back pattern and throat color show …

Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman Sep 1970

Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Although botanists have been actively collecting in Utah for well over a century, the distribution of many plants are as yet imperfectly known. This is, in part, due to the scattered nature of Utah herbarium material. Also the terrain of the state has impeded collection in more rugged and remote areas. The present study gathers together the data from the major collections of native Utah trees and clarifies our present understanding of tree distributions in the state. The older collection records have been extensively supplemented by the field work of the author and other botanists.

The great diversity of environments …

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering Sep 1970

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering

Special Reports

Overbreeding has created a surplus of nearly 50 million dogs and cats. These animals are unwanted and homeless. Some of them--the lucky ones--will get a quick, merciful death at humane society shelters. Most, however, haven't even the hope of being reached and protected from suffering in the 3,000 or more communities without humane societies. Instead, they roam the country--starving, thirsting, suffering from disease and injury.

This is suffering on a massive scale. Many factors contribute to it. Commercial interests like pet shops, for example, are partly to blame in suggesting there is money in breeding puppies and kittens. Veterinarians who …

Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways Aug 1970

Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Study of specimens collected from critical localities since 1944 reveals that: Neotoma montezumae and N. leucodon zacatecae are indistinguishable from earlier named taxa; N. latifrons is a subspecies of an earlier named taxon; and N. palatina, previously known from only one specimen and thought by some mammalogists to be merely an aberrant individual of Neotoma albigula, is a species distinct from N. albigula as Goldman tentatively decided when he named it 64 years ago. In the narial passage, the partition formed by the vomer that extends well behind the hard palate as a sword-like projection is present in …

Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman Jun 1970

Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A mountain brush vegetation typified by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) dominates the uplands of Mesa Verde National Park. There is evidence that this brush element is a successional stage that has been maintained by repeated natural fires in a large part of the Mesa Verde landscape. This study was conducted to determine the role of fire in the region's ecology, the nature of the climax pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) vegetation, and the major successional stages that lead to the climax condition.

Three postburn …

Natural Sovereignty On The High Seas, Thomas Arthur Marnane May 1970

Natural Sovereignty On The High Seas, Thomas Arthur Marnane

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine a current dispute involving resources in the sea, determine the issues involved, and hypothesize a solution. Specifically, the dispute chosen involves Latin American claims to extensive sovereign fishery rights in adjacent coastal waters and objections to these claims. The United States and the parties to a declaration made in Santiago, Chile, in 1882, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, have been chosen as most representative of the opposing positions. The International Court of Justice, primarily utilizing as a framework for analysis the dicta, findings, and opinions in their February 1969 Judgment in the North …

A Mesoscale Radiation Study Of The Cache Valley, Nolasco G. Baldazo May 1970

A Mesoscale Radiation Study Of The Cache Valley, Nolasco G. Baldazo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The radiation climate of Cache Valley was established from the continuous recordings of global and diffuse sky radiation at Utah State University campus from June 1968 to July 1969 and August 1968 to July 1969, respectively. The influence of topographic features during summer and winter conditions at seven representative locations running on an east-west direction across the valley were determined by making short term measurements on clear days.

A comparison of the clear day average global radiation on approximate dates of the same solar declination shows higher values during late winter and spring than the values during late summer and …

Zoogeography Of Bats, Karl F. Koopman Jan 1970

Zoogeography Of Bats, Karl F. Koopman

Fondren Science Series

The Order Chiroptera is the second largest order of mammals, with, according to my most recent revised figure, 846 species. Inasmuch as the group is world-wide, reaching many distant islands, and inasmuch as many species and higher groups are quite localized and some very distinctive, one might expect that a good deal of work on bat zoogeography would have been undertaken. However, such is not the case. Darlington (1957, pp. 320-410) does discuss the general geographical patterns of bats, and Tate (1946) gives a useful analysis of the bats of the Malay archipelago. However, many writers on zoogeography have given …
