Ensuring Housing Stability And Protections For The Nation’S Renters: Avenues For Federal Action, Margaret Hagan, Peter Hepburn, Justin Steil, Brandon Weiss
Ensuring Housing Stability And Protections For The Nation’S Renters: Avenues For Federal Action, Margaret Hagan, Peter Hepburn, Justin Steil, Brandon Weiss
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
What would it take to ensure housing stability and protections for the nation’s renters? This essay reviews the current literature on landlord–tenant laws, eviction court policies, the provision of legal aid, and the residential security of renter households. It then lays out avenues through which the federal government—particularly the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)—might work to improve renters’ stability. These include targeted efforts to improve engagement with both tenants and landlords, robust implementation of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing provision of the federal Fair Housing Act, especially around source of income discrimination, and facilitation of reforms to state …

An Inquiry-Based Interdisciplinary Social Studies Unit On Libraries Around The World In A Second-Grade Classroom: A Curriculum Development, Emma G. Weinman
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
This project explores inquiry-based learning and project-based learning. My specific interest in interdisciplinary, inquiry-based instruction stemmed from professional development received, and from an overarching initiative to move towards this type of instruction within the school building that I work. The curriculum developed provides a two-week lesson sequence that can be implemented within a second-grade classroom. The lesson sequence is inquiry-based, and provides opportunities for students to communicate, collaborate, create, and think critically throughout the learning process. This curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature and is designed to meet second-grade Ohio social studies standards, as well as standards in other areas. The …

Subjective Evaluation Of Place Environmental Quality In Conference And Exhibition Buildings In Small- And Medium-Sized Cities: An Empirical Case Study, Yuchen Xie, Jianhe Luo, Peng Du
College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers
The environmental quality of conference and exhibition places in small- and medium-sized cities plays a crucial role in attracting exhibitors, fostering the growth of the conference and exhibition industry and enhancing the market competitiveness of these places. However, past decision makers have often adopted planning models from large cities, neglecting the interaction between conference and exhibition places in smaller cities and local lifestyles as well as urban environments. From an “environment-behavior” per- spective, this study reveals the unique interaction mechanisms between exhibitors and the built environment within such venues. Moving beyond the limitations of traditional research that focused solely on …
Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Human-Carnivore Conflict In The Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem, Tanzania, Sophie Carpenter
Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Human-Carnivore Conflict In The Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem, Tanzania, Sophie Carpenter
Environmental Studies Honors Projects
Livestock depredation by large carnivores significantly threatens human livelihoods across the globe, with severe ecological and socioeconomic implications. Economic costs of livestock depredation impact the tolerance for carnivores among communities living alongside wildlife, often straining human-carnivore coexistence. Using geographic and temporal attributes from livestock depredation records (n=406) collected between 2004 and 2023, we identified spatiotemporal patterns of depredation by African lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas in the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem in northern Tanzania. We found significant interactive relationships between the number of attacks reported and the season, time, and site of attack; with these interactions differing between the carnivores. To better …
Waylight: Mapping The Journey Of Faith, Emma Woerle
Waylight: Mapping The Journey Of Faith, Emma Woerle
Theses
Waylight is a digital learning platform that reimagines how we explore the life of Jesus through maps, movement, and meaningful interaction. Designed to bridge the gap between static Bible study tools and the physical settings of Scripture, the platform allows users to follow curated journeys such as Miracles or Timelines across ancient Israel. The project began with experimental designs using three-dimensional terrain and literal religious symbols. These early versions lacked cohesion and felt visually heavy. As the work progressed, the design shifted toward a more refined two-dimensional aesthetic inspired by textures like layered paper and the craft of carpentry. This …
Calculating The Radius Of The Earth Using Sunset Method: Comparison With Al-BīRūNi Method, Jana Kamal, Tayeb Brahimi
Calculating The Radius Of The Earth Using Sunset Method: Comparison With Al-BīRūNi Method, Jana Kamal, Tayeb Brahimi
Effat Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper attempts to compare the earth's radius calculation based on the sunset or sunrise (moonset or moonrise) with the Method developed by the scientist Al-Bīrūni. The sunset sunrise method is used to calculate the earth radius by standing in front of a flat horizontal plane. In addition, the authors have use Al-Bīrūni's rule to calculate the radius. Furthermore, the error percent of both Al-Bīrūni and the sunset sunrise method were calculated as well. The results showed that the earth actual radius is 6371 km. Eratosthenes radius which is 6366 km is the closest to the actual earth radius, then …

Methodology In The Natural And Social Sciences And Its Relationship To Geography, James T. Lorell
The Geographical Bulletin
Various methodologies are utilized in science in the achievement of these goals. Wellman concludes, "in the determination of cause and effect relations, scientific methods are indispensable, but there is no one scientific method which is inherently superior to others. We are gradually coming to realize that there is no one best method for all problems, but rather that research procedure calls for the finding of a blend of methods that is adapted to our particular problem "2
A Review Of Some Research Paradigms And Problems In Social-Science Research Of Interest To Contemporary Geography, Richard J. Newcombe
A Review Of Some Research Paradigms And Problems In Social-Science Research Of Interest To Contemporary Geography, Richard J. Newcombe
The Geographical Bulletin
The purpose of this paper is to contrast research methods in use in the Biological and Physical Sciences with those in use in the Social Sciences, and to do so in a manner which emphasizes aspects of these methods of interest to Geographers. Attention is directed to the strengths and weaknesses of different research paradigms with respect to problems which are characteristic of social science subject matter. Many of these problems take a different form or are absent in the older disciplines in which most of the research types reviewed have their origins.
Thoughts And Observations Concerning The Future Of Geomorphic And Soils Research*, David Stiller
Thoughts And Observations Concerning The Future Of Geomorphic And Soils Research*, David Stiller
The Geographical Bulletin
Geomorphology is today challenged as it has never been challenged before. The days of Davis and Penck, acknowledged giants of the past, are gone. The time when description of the earth's surface features is sufficient unto itself is in its final days. For the most part, those who would be geomorphologists have had to find a newer, more relevant rationale. Many have investigated those processes which shape our earth-and perhaps this is as it should be.
Malaria In Mexico, C. Johnson
Malaria In Mexico, C. Johnson
The Geographical Bulletin
The traditional picture of Mexico, at least to the average tourist, is never complete without a peon, in sombrero and serape, sleeping in the noonday sun, or putting off to manana whatever physical exertion is required. Actually, when seriously considered, this picture is found to be a myth, no more representative of the Mexican than the traditional cowboy or gangster image is of the American. What is interesting in the image of the peon, however, is that he is an excellent example of a population debilitated by malaria. To most North Americans, the existence of endemic malaria in an industrialized, …

The Geographical Bulletin
It is raining again. Your penetrating wet coat Caresses the body of the bare penurious trees With warmth and love. Your pendant ringlets tinkle In the calm morning freshness Proclaiming life With each trivial drop. Slithering from leaf to stem Your comforting arms Encompass the lonesome trees With a fleece of regenerating security. And even though you are cursed and blessed, You feel no pain or lust but Reside in your commitment To give what you have Allowing life to continue. It is raining again.
The Field Trip: Living Geography, Lawrence R. Handle
The Field Trip: Living Geography, Lawrence R. Handle
The Geographical Bulletin
A necessary skill of the geographer is the ability to observe and correlate in the landscape what the classroom is and is not able to teach. Fieldwork and the field trip, as carried on by the individual or a group, become the means of learning geographical concepts by direct observation of the landscape. The field trip may be of varying length, a walking tour, or a driving trip of 10 to 2,500 miles, and of varying intent and scope. It may be single-purpose, such as to study the CBD, industry, or residences; or multipurpose, to study combinations of landscape patterns, …

Shqiptari: The Origins And Distribution Of Population In Albania, G. Philip Curti
The Geographical Bulletin
From a hearthland in the eastern Caucasus, the Albanians migrated by two routes and three waves. The Gheg moved north of the Black Sea to the Illyrian culture area, and the Tosc through Anatolia. Modern censuses of the People's Republic of Albania are improving in content and accuracy and population movement over the decade 1960-1969 shows marked trends towards urbanization concentrated in the rrathe of Vlore, Berat, Lushnje, Durres and Tirane. The old are left in the highlands, and despite wartime losses, males still outnumber females.

Volume 8 represents a variety of interests expressed by competent geographers. Two articles deal with general observations regarding the state of geographic research; one treats in essay form the perceived need for further work in soils research; two represent thorough research dealing with widely divergent topics; and one discusses some of the details of a basic technique-field tripping. Finally, you will find the Bulletin's first attempt at poetry. We liked it, and after all, the alternative was no poetry at all. And wouldn't that be dreary? The editor's chair is one place for a different type of reflection than one …
Disciplinary Literacy In Preschool Classrooms, Mckenna Beam
Disciplinary Literacy In Preschool Classrooms, Mckenna Beam
Graduate Teacher Education
The research questioned the potential impact disciplinary literacy may have on academic growth in early childhood classrooms and considered how preschool teachers can implement developmentally appropriate practices focusing on disciplinary literacy to support academic readiness skills. Schools emphasize a need for early intervention in the math and literacy domains to combat the academic achievement gap, but Chapin (2006) recognized a need for early intervention in the science and social studies domains as well. With this knowledge in mind, specific developmentally appropriate methods for integrating science, social studies, music, and art instruction in preschool classrooms were highlighted. Systemic methods of implementing …

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
One does not have to search on the internet to conclude that our home, Earth, had greatly changed since its birth approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Perhaps, what is the most obvious is how our Earth went from being blue, green, and brown landscapes to a world of concrete jungles. Inevitably, there will be biodiversity and habitat loss. Biodiversity loss, as defined by United Nations office for Disaster Risk Reduction “refers to the reduction of any aspect of biological diversity (i.e.., diversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels) in a particular area through death (including extinction), destruction or manual …

Background: Diverse populations are more exposed to life course influences on adverse ageing, including brain ageing. Research into dementia in the United Kingdom inadvertently lacks diversity. Therefore, there is a need for more inclusive dementia research, developed in a way to ensure those who are currently missing from standard health data are represented. This may warrant the use of co-creation (emphasising collaborative creation and solution development), drawing on participatory methodologies in healthcare, research and service delivery. Methods: This study presents a scoping review of grey literature using Arksey and O’Malley’s methodology. Literature was sourced from the Patient Experience Library and …

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 399 collected new cores from the Atlantis Massif (30°N; Mid-Atlantic Ridge), an oceanic core complex that hosts the Lost City hydrothermal field (LCHF). Studies of the Atlantis Massif and the LCHF have transformed our understanding of tectonic, magmatic, hydrothermal, and microbial processes at slow-spreading ridges. The Atlantis Massif was the site of four previous expeditions (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions 304, 305, and 340T and IODP Expedition 357) and numerous dredging and submersible expeditions. The deepest IODP hole in young (<2 My) oceanic lithosphere, Hole U1309D, was drilled ~5 km north of the LCHF and reached 1415 meters below seafloor (mbsf) through a series of primitive gabbroic rocks. A series of 17 shallow (<16.4 mbsf) holes were also drilled at 9 sites across the south wall of the massif during Expedition 357, recovering heterogeneous rock types including hydrothermally altered peridotites, gabbroic, and basaltic rocks. The hydrologic regime differs between the two locations, with a low-permeability conductive regime in Hole U1309D and a high- (and possibly deep-reaching) permeability regime along the southern wall.
